Subject: BOX SET
Hello all! I've been lurking for quite some time now. I have been
anticipating the Kinks Box Set for years. However, I feel the new set
falls short of what us die hard Kinks fans are looking for. For four
years, I have compiled THE PERFECT box set of my own. I have done
this for myself as a true labor of love for our boys, there are no
crummy recordings, muffled, garbled or bootlegged versions. I have
painstakingly remastered every track so they are pristine CD quality
throughout. I created this in a documentary fashion, avoiding being
chronological, and setting up topical interviews interspersed with
live tracks, outtakes, studio remasters, everything a Kinks fan would
want in a boxed set. With issues touching on the ban from america,
the brothers' feuding, Ray's songwriting, Daves spiritual
transformation, Daves missing solo album in the late 60's, you name
it!
Well, the reason I am saying all this out-of-lurkdom, is because I
simply cannot keep this boxed set to myself. I will not sell it to
anyone, because it is illegal, but also because I want this to be a
gift to Kinks fans...I am really proud of it. If anyone wants a copy,

Subject: Why Ray is my hero?
I consider him my all time hero is for just this reason alone (although there are many others too), that being the defining perimeters of his social consciousness and all that is encompassed by it and keeps reoccurring throughout out his entire career is all that I hold sacred and sums up exactly how I feel about life, the world, society, civilization and just everyday life as well. And considering much of his point of views also are from someone who was born and grew up very British that says a lot that he was able to convert this Brooklyn, NY, born, Long Island raised, and now living in Montvale, New Jersey Boy in to a Muswell Hillbilly Boy.

Subject: DAVE's not here
DAVE wasn't in Omaha last week, but Cheech and Chong were.
When I found out they were coming here, I asked Rob Peirson if he'd make a
copy of the DVD I'd sent him last summer to give to RAY at the Grove in CA,
as seen here:
(be sure to view Rob's {rosierooke} other KINKS related videos, they are
gRAYt!!!)
Anyway, the end of the DVD was inspired by Ch & Ch's "Sister Mary Elephant"
routine. It was a school assignment where we had to do an interview so I had
my cat, Funny Face, interview me about being on the Don't Forget Your
Toothbrush show with RAY. I asked Rob to start the DVD off with that end bit
so they wouldn't have to sit through the full 20+ minutes, and then follow
it up with the whole video. I no longer have access to the equipment to do
this myself and am very gRAYtful to Rob for sending me 3 copies in time.
I enclosed letters with the DVDs mentioning that DAVE DAVIES loved their
"Dave" routine. DAVE once told me that he and his friends would do the
Dave's not here bit all the time and how much fun they had with it.
I got to the venue early and ran into their manager. I showed him my "Big
Bamboo" album and a Playboy picture of Chong where he's posing naked
(covering his junk with his hands) with a comical, embarrassed look on his
face. That made him LOL. I asked about autographs. He said they sometimes
come out after the gig for the fans, but since it was so cold they would
not. He saw how anxious I was so he gave me a back stage pass (YAY!!!). I've
heard that the VIP passes cost +- $250!!!! and there's no way I could afford
that!
The show was excellent and after wards groups of 4 pass holders were allowed
back at a time. I shook Shelby (Chong's wife), Chong and Cheech's hands and
told Cheech he helped me to learn Spanish. I spoke quite a bit of Spanish
with him and had him sign Big Bamboo. Then I had Chong sign it and told them
it was the very first album I ever bought (even before any music albums!)
and that I brought it to school to play but my 5th grade teacher took it off
before it even got to the end of SME. Chong thought that was funny.
I then gave Cheech his DVD/letter and he said he'd watch it as soon as they
got out. When I gave Chong his DVD he seemed surprised and asked, "Is that
for me???" I said of course, it's yours to keep and explained to them both
what it was, but that there was no porn on it (LOL). When I handed Chong the
Playboy picture, he laughed. I asked him to write "To Spacecake", my
nickname when I lived in Amsterdam for 15 years. He said curiously,
"Spacecakes?", I said no, just Spacecake. I guess he didn't understand
because both autographs were to Spacecakes. (On the Ch & Ch official site I
thanked them and said that Chong could call me Spacecakes) Cheech remarked
that the Playboy picture was taken at Chong's house. I asked them what
Amsterdam theater was used for the Still Smokin' movie, Chong said it was
the Tuschinski. Then the next group of pass holders was coming so I thanked
Cheech in Spanish and Chong in Chinese (I'd asked him if he spoke Chinese he
said,
"Huh?" but I thanked him and said goodbye in Chinese, anyway). I forgot to
get my picture with them and to tell them personally about DAVE's admiration
of their "Dave" skit. I'm so glad I wrote about DAVE in both letters.
I'd like to again thank Rob, Olga, Kate H., Yoshi, Alfred (Plus One) and all
of my KINKS friends who have given the KINKS my letters and love over the
years. I have long thanked RAY and DAVE for all the wonderful KINKS friends
they have given me. You guys are the gRAYtest!!!
Hugs,
tRAcY (aka "Airhead" (to RAY),"Spacecake" or to Chong, "Spacecakes")

Subject: Smithereens
At some point in the early 90s, the Smithereens were supposed to back Dave
Davies for a show in metro Detroit, probably at a 1,000-seat venue. I'd
planned to go but the show was canceled a week or two prior.
Several years ago, I posted a question asking of the connection between
the Kinks and Smithereens. I can't remember the answer, but perhaps if
anyone does, it might be relevant now.
Even if there's nothing specific, I can't see any problem with occasional
comments regarding non-Kinks subjects. And let's not be too hard on Mr.
Young; I'm willing to bet he was just having a bad day.

Subject: Ray, Dave and the Smithereens at Boston Gardens in 91...
Yes it has been mentioned here before but anything kinks Ray or Dave
related can always be mentioned here as many times as possible considering
that this is what this digest is really and most importantly about in the
first place anyway and since there are so many off topic and non
kinks/Ray/Dave posts, the repetition of kontent related to kinkdom is
always welcome for the people and fans who join this list at different
time intervals. So everyone post more and especially if it is kinks
related in anyway and don;t worry if it has been said once before or a
hundred times before, it's all good and many times when something is
repeated some new info or insight comes out of it.
Anyway back to the The Smithereens backing up Ray and Dave at the Boston
Gardens in 91, I know I personally have told some stories about that show
here a few times, but I just want to specifically say again that there is
pro-quality video & audio of that performance that has never made it on
youtube or the internet yet as far as I know? It is the personal property
of the guys in the band and I was fortunate enough once to get to see it
from them. ( meaning the Smithereens )
And yes the 3 original members of the Smithereens, Jimmy, Dennis and Mike ( no longer with the band ) were all BIG kinks fans who I knew way before they were in a band back in the early 70's. They were members of the kinks preservation society that I ran out of Valley Stream, New York, and they accompanied me on several occasion back to the old Warwick Hotel in NYC where The kinks use to stay back in those days, and that's where they first met Ray and Dave. Ira Kaplan from Yo La Tengo also was a friend of mine back then before he was in bands and would also be with us many times, again first time he met Ray and the band and also later on went to have a musical konnection to Ray backing Ray up at the Jane Street theatre shows in NYC 8 years ago or was it 9 now?
and this video is always worth repeating for my friend tRacy...' don't
forget your toothbrush " staring Ray Davies and our very own tRacy!

Subject: A small contribution to the Smithereens thread
Here's my little Smithereens story.
I've seen them only once. It was in Boston, probably in 1999, in other
words, during a part of my life when I was attending many Dave shows.
The routine with Dave, of course, involved getting to the venue very
early in order to get the coveted front row standing position.
But this was the 'Reens and I remember saying to my koncert going
partner, "We won't bother to get there early. The folks who are the real
big Smithereens fans should get the front row for this one."
So, we got there about ten minutes before the music started. Where did I
wind up standing? In the front row, in front of the guitarist. It just
happened that way. No one was guarding any standing spots, and I just
walked up to the stage and took the standing spot that I was used to.
I was wearing a Dave koncert shirt, and I got a big grin and a thumbs-up
from Pat Dinizio when he saw it.
Frank Reda was at that show. Not Frank Lima, who often talks up the
'Reens on this list, but the super-Kinks-fan sometimes known as "Freaky
Frank."

Thank you Jill Brand and Tracy Noonan for defending my Smithereens post.
And thank you Neil for putting together a consistently well-organized
list.
Jeff Young wrote:
"Seems to me more like certain people dominate the list and insist
on giving too much information about their personal tastes and
influence."
The ironic thing about this comment is that I have been on this list for nearly twelve years and prefer to lurk most of the time. I probably haven't posted more than fifteen times. I would hardly consider that dominating the list. (If I wanted to post more I would.) That said, if you don't have an interest for a particular thread, skip over it. I do all the time. I went to a Smithereens show and for over an hour the preshow music was all Kinks. I thought it was interesting and worth a post having been to many concerts of all types and not having had that experience before.
<dtirendi@charter.net> wrote " Not sure if this has already been posted but I saw Ray and Dave perform in the old Boston Gaaahhhden in 1991 ( I believe ). WBCN was doing a beneft show for Tasacs Disease and there were a bunch of groups scheduled but the show was only about half sold-out. Ray heard of the benefit ( as I remember it) and contacted WBCN to see if the Kinks could help out. I think someone very close to Ray had recently died of the disease. As soon as it was announced they were being added to the show, the rest of tix were immediately sold. As it turned out, only Ray and Dave showed and the Smithereens, whom were already booked for the concert, backed Ray and Dave for an approximately 30 minute set. They rocked - it was an awesome night!"
The version of YRGM from that show (November 22, 1991) is on Attack of the
Smithereens, a collection of "rare" tracks released in 1995. Apparently
the cd itself was somewhat rare as after a Smithereens show in 2007 I
asked the band to sign it, and Pat Dinizzio called the new bassist, the
Thrilla, as well as members of the road crew over to see it. As an aside,
(Warning: Personal Commentary, non-Kinks-related), on the ride home from
the show my husband pulled out the cd to play and promptly cracked it in
half while inserting in the cd player. (It should be noted he found
another copy on eBay. Points for him.)
Many thanks again.
Cheers, Michelle
