Regarding 'State of Confusion'. I'm with you Dan. Great album. And to me, 'Property' is in the top 5 Ray songs of all time! A better song about divorce or breaking up doesn't exist. The imagery is comparable to 'Waterloo Sunset' to me. The last 4 lines--
And all the little gifts we thought we'd thrown away,
The useless souvenirs bought on a holiday.
We put them on a shelf, now they're collecting dust.
We never needed them, but they outlasted us.
Perfect heartbreaking lyrics!!!
But the whole album is great! 'Heart of Gold'- wonderful, the harmonies in
'Don't forget your Pants'. Dave belting out 'Bernadette'. What's not to love?
And then there's 'Young Conservatives', expertly diagramming the post-disco
Reagan worshiping college kids of the late 70's. I just think the whole band
was in top form for this record.
Merry Christmas, Colin

Dan Rosen is right, "Property" is one of the greatest Kinks tunes.there's SO

I agree with Dan Rosen about SOC and GTPWTW. I'd add Word of Mouth to
that list, too. "Do it Again" is one of the best singles the Kinks ever
put out, just as good as those 60's classics. The first time I heard
SOC, I was with a friend, and we both grinned at the part of "Cliches"
where Ray says "he travels to a galaxy deep in space, where a man can
live out his fantay, and experience UNIMAGINABLE PLEASURE". Just the way
he says that! Ray's genius! 'Young Conservatives" could apply just as
much today as in 1983. And someone here earlier put down "State of
Confusion" as a "stadium rocker", but it's great fun to play on guitar.
I've got my own attic demo of it somewhere. Ditto for "Give the People
What They Want", great riff to play on guitar, and Mick's drumming is
volcanic! I think Mick is a very underrated drummer. I started off as a
drummer before becoming a guitar player, and I'm pretty good, I'm a good
timekeeper, but I can't do what Mick is doing on "Back to Front" or
"Noise". To his credit, Mick is equally good on the softer stuff like
"Come Dancing".

for State of Confusion too. It was my first LP, yes, LP, remember
riding my bike out to Crazy Eddie on Rt. 22 in Union, NJ, to buy it.
Was it their best album up to that point? No, that certainly would've
been VGPS or Something Else, but it being one of my first LPs really,
I knew it inside out, loved it (except for "Bernadette"). Word of
Mouth's the one that felt like a too quickly thrown together sloppy
follow-up with only an LP's worth of quality tunes. I'm also

Of course, I had to give Father Christmas a look. Also a great video,
but I was struck more than ever what a great song this is, which the
Kinks just seemed to toss off so easily. Again, here's an Arista-era
song that sounds every bit as good as the 60s stuff to me. I was

Hello all, Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays for whatever holiday you
may keep. Weighing in on favorite Kinks lp's or least favorite. I
discount the first few Reprise issues though I rather like Kink-Size.
Every thing about it is just so 1965. Face to Face is brilliant. Just a
fantastic record. Something Else, Village Green, Arthur, and Lola were an
amazing run. Particularly, I played Arthur and Lola to the point of
wearing out multiple copies of each. I think that Arthur is the apex of
Ray's writing and there isn't a better Dave album start to finish. He
never sounded better, before or since. And the best part was that no-one
knew who the Kinks were in those days. If you think they get no respect
now, In America from 1967 - 1969, especially, no-one and I mean no-one,
except us, gave a crap about the Kinks. But I digress.
As for the RCA stuff, I liked Muswell Hillbillies alot. It doesn't get much better than "20th Century Man" and "Oklahoma USA". I thought the rest of that period was sub par but with some nice moments. I liked Sleepwalker and Misfits but could take or leave the rest of the Arista issues - but again, each with some real nice stuff. From that point on I think the lp's are all sub par but some of my favorite songs come out of this period; "Down All The Days", "Lost and Found", "When You Were a Child", "Still Searching" to name a few. The point is, it really is an incredible catalogue with hours and hours worth of some of the best stuff ever done. God Save the Kinks. Happy Holidays everyone.
