choir. All went well.

This is a reminder that now is a good time to start planning and sending
in your KinKs tribute and block of songs requests for Ray's Birthday
coming up on June 21st. In most areas radio stations play sets of music
by particular bands for special occasions such as this and in the past
for many years going back as far as 1970 I have been quite successful in
getting my set of KinKs requests played on the air over the major NY and
NYC area radio stations. So start planning and sending them to every
rock station in your area...and don't forget Ray's solo stuff too!

and now with internet access to radio stations outside your area you can
do this around the country or world if you want!

Hi everyone, this is a grouch ! ! !

Just played the new CD and now receiving counselling........... For
those who haven't heard it yet, it's a collection of simple arrangements
and instrumentation backed by oooooh's and Ray who turned up to put the
voice over on a wet Thursday afternoon. It's a disapointment; lacks
vision and passion; lacks imagination and depth. For UK people -
remember the old radio show 'Sing something simple' (my old dad listened
to this in the 60's) well here it comes again. And whilst we at it, dear
Ray loose the silly hat, glasses and brown suit....you're turning into
the ancient Elvis Costello !

Isn't it disheartening to hear someone (and not just someone but a die
hard Kinks fan) describe a song as their least favourite when you love
that same song? I'm purposely not naming names and for the same reason
won't name any of my own. I will say that part of the beauty of the
Kinks work is that it really lends itself to continual re-discovery
with my appreciation of some songs growing greatly over time.

Subject: Kinks songs I don't like

Having fun reading the various "Kinks songs I don't like" entries. The
Kinks have been my favorites since 1964. It's a chemical in the brain
thing, I'm sure. In 1968 I mowed my parents lawn by sculpting "Kinks" in
giant letters, arcing across the front yard. My parents were not amused
but there it stayed (for a few days anyway...what a rebel). Point being I
love the Kinks, just not everything they've done and others of you seem
to be the same. That's how it should be. I am convinced that "Misfits"
was written for me. Having met the band after waiting outside the stage
door at the Boston Music Hall, I'm sure Ray rushed right home and wrote
that for me. While I think of it, Marianne Price asked if any of us had a
joint, sadly we did not. I'm pretty sure statutes of limitations have
expired on that so I'm sure she won't mind too much my mentioning it.
Also, we got spit at by one of the band - and it wasn't Dave; while John
Dalton seemed like a real nice guy. Ah, good times. So here are some
Kinks goodies I really, really like (who cares?)..."See My Friends", "I
Need You", "A Long Way From Home", "Get Back In Line", "All Day And All
Of The Night", way too many to list them all. On the other hand..."Rock
N Roll Cities", "Someone Stole My Car", a few others; Yipes!!... Favorite
LP's: "Arthur", "Lola...", "Village Green", "Kinks-Size". Least favorite:
"Phobia"

Subject: Tracks of my years

Neil & everyone,
Thanks for the heads up about forthcoming RDD media appearances.
The format of the Tracks of my years segment in Ken Bruce's show is
that every day in the week an artist chooses 2 records (ie 10 in all
over the week) that he/she likes or deems to have been inspiring. In
between the 2 records there is a short interview clip. I look forward
to hearing which tunes Ray chooses and what he says about them.
The segment airs usually at about 11.40/11.45am, near the end of the
show (that ends at noon). Also each show is logged and can be heard at
the BBC site for up to a week after broadcast.

It is my opinion that frank should not make statements regarding religion,
regardless of race or creed in the Kinks Digest.

Quoting John Lennon does not disprove or prove anything, as any religion is
solely based on Faith for the indivual. The fact that the Beatles had a
large fan base and sold millions of records, which I also bought, does not
disprove the existance of a God or Superior Being or whatever.

George Harrison released "My Sweet Lord" which was a number 1 hit. Although
this also does not prove or disaprove the existance of a Creator. So this
would suggest that frank is bigoted and selective in what quote he chose.

Rays lyrics as follows:-
We need a hymn for a new age
Rewrite the book on a fresh page
If I'm to find God and be saved
I need a hymn for a new age

I wish to record that I find franks comments offensive and he should attempt
if possible to respect the Beliefs that others may hold.

Remember, this is the KINKS digest and not for would be theologians.

I emailed and called XM and asked them to please do some sort of Kinks

hope he doesn't retire like everybody else. Collect a pension and get a
gold watch. I think he still has gas in his tank and he's got a long way
to go.

I think Ray really blew it with this choral collection. If he was gonna
reunite the Kinks, this would've been the time to do it - on a

that contemporary music has its roots in Gospel/Blues means that u can
thank God for the Kinks whether you believe in God or dont
believe.There the matters closed.

I've hear some criticism of the choral c. d. Lets not forget that for
people who like the likes of Presevation,Muswell Hillbillies.The
whimsical tunes,the racous tunes. People like myself. The choral
interperation of some classic song,is going to be tame. But thats the
whole point. Enjoy for what it is a CHORAL c.d. if its not ur cup of tea
so be it.

religion, but this post is mostly about the choral CD. In any case, I
have about 4 other posts about the digression. Instead of including

Hi all,

Why, all of a sudden, is Frank's mention of god such an offensive notion!?!
Where are all the offended people when "GOD SAVE THE KINKS" is posted?
I've been biting my tongue every time I read that.

I'm not trying to start a war of words here. And I'm certainly not
defending anyone.

I'm just wondering, where is the line drawn?

I know Neil wants to draw a line under under the recent God debate, but
as a Christian Can I just conclude the debate by stating something no
serious music music lover can dispute. The Kinks along with others were
motivated by there discovery of Blues music which was of course
spawned by Gospel music (the Rolling Stones first two hit records were
Gospel songs where the lyric had been changed to a love song of
sorts. In a rather brilliant exploration of where contemporary music
originated from,on channel four. The man behind the programme (called
The Voice ) was put on the spot at the end of his polemic, and asked
to state where did it start, he paused,reflected and answered ."Gospel
Music." By chance Ive been listening a Jools Holland C. D. disc one
called "The Informer" Disc two "The Source" Jools who recently
introduced Ray on his show "as one of the worlds greatest songwriters"
was on the aforesaid C.D. drawing peoples attention to the source of
our modern music.I was never really interested by what John Lennon had
to say, in fact I was always championing the the music of Ray and the
boys, when it was, to say the least,unfashionable.

Pheobequack you are one of the minority of people who get it, and by it
I meant what not only the Kinks and everything they have stood for but
also about rock & roll in general and what it is all about. And we have
never met and you even knew what I was talking about... and of course
my friend the one & only Dr. Robert Young on the West Coast too!

First of all isn't Eric Clapton God? Or was it Mark Farner? That was the
the big debate going around my high school in Valley Stream back in 1970
and 1971. Ray Davies wasn't even in the running except for me.

And to those who criticized me get your facts straight first and learn
your rock & roll basics...' God is a Concept by which we measure our
pain " were not my words they were John Lennon's words, another one of
my idols in the running but under Ray for the GOD status.

Rock & Roll to some may be only "Juke Box Music", it has a nice beat and
you can dance to it. Even though I know it's only rock & roll, but I....
more than like it, I live it. Rock & Roll and everything it has ( or at
least was suppose to have?) stood for and be all about is my Religion,
and Ray is my top God in my religion. That does not mean it has to be
yours or you have to agree...as a kinks fan we're all not like everybody
else, right? "We need a hymn I believe I need something to look up to I

Subject: The "Digression"

I'm not sure why the "Digression" into religion is not a fair topic for
discussion. I like that Neil keeps this list relatively free of
political talk, but the view that Ray, the Kinks, or any musician are
"god-like" or provide spirituality seems to me to be within the
appropriate scope of discussion on a music board. I am not remotely
offended by Frank's references to Ray as God (nor by others referring to
Clapton as God, or to the "Church of Bruce", etc.), and I have myself
experienced greater amounts of spirituality and other sorts of communal
religious feelings at concerts than I generally do in a house of
worship. And I understand that others might be offended by such
references to a musician as God -- just as atheists may be offended by
talk of God as an all-powerful ruler and seer.

So far, this seems to me to be an appropriate discussion that Neil could
cut off if it got out-of-hand.

getting a bit too heated and upsetting for certain people. Discussing
religion in Ray's lyrics is one thing, but there is a limit to how much
you can say about whether saying "Ray is God" is offensive or not.

Hello everyone,
I just heard very sad news from Japan.

Hiroshi Uchida, the biggest kinks fan in the Land of the Rising Sun, had
a stroke. He is una ble to move one side of his body and now is in a
hospital.

I have known Hiroshi for 15 years and I can tell you that he is a top
bloke with a good heart and great passion about the Kinks. Let's all
pray for him and wish he'll get better soon.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I've had brief exposure to Japan, going there
once alone for a week just to see what i could see. I stayed across from
the "John Lennon Museum," which the fact that they even have one gives you
an idea how 'into' music they are. My tour guide, whom I called "My little
Japanese Pen Pal," was taking care of her mother who also had a stroke. She
would not accept any outside help for it, not from the Japanese social
system nor from her relatives, and I still don't know if that was cultural
or personal. It was difficult to watch, 'though, 'cause she got up at 4
a.m. to care for her mother, left her with some food, in diapers, with the
tv on, and took a train for two hours to work in a cubicle with 5,000 other
women and one male boss. I know this 'cause I saw it. Again, my heart
goes out to Uchida and his family. I lost my mother to a stroke when I was
21 and she was 45.

Choral CD:

So anyone out there actually here this end to end? I have seen the
reviews which tend to be two starred, which is frankly not a surprise.
To be honest I have some trepidation on Ray releasing this CD. First the
Electric Proms videos showed how the choral arrangements could really
accentuate some Kinks tunes! Shangri La in particular was stunning.
That said the VGPS tunes I expect will sound excellent as well. My fear
is that the studio version of Shangri La will pale to the Proms-might have
been nice to use that live version, include it as a bonus video. I am NOT
looking forward to hearing YRGM with a chorus-I don't know why! That song
has always been the foundation of many things, the beginning of the Kinks,
the beginning of real rock and roll, heavy metal if you will, gave the
Who, Bowie and others something to build on. Having this done with a
chorus just does not sound right....but maybe I will be surprised. Again
to be clear I understand why some of the reviews are the way they are-why
mess with classics--BUT having songs from Arthur and VGPS get the
attention, publicity, and recognition in a new format that highlights
there true melodic and then lyrical strength, in to me what sounds very
BRITISH-is a great way for these songs to get the exposure they were never
given in the UK-make sense? Anyhow would love to see some reviews from
the folks, good to see the CD selling well in the UK where I think Ray
should be recognized for his art, and finally I will of course buy it, but
know when YRGM comes on I hope to be surprised. Mr Bill

PS-is this God fellow new to the list, maybe that's why Ray did the choral
release!

I haven't seen many, but I must admit that I won't be buying it. It only
neutralises the songs. It worked as a novelty at the Electric Proms, but not
as an album IMO. As for sales, I can't see any evidence that it is selling
as well as other recent releases. I'm obviously Not Like Everybody Else!

Hi Neil&all Kinksters! I've just got my copy of Ray's KINKS CHORAL
COLLECTION,and boy was I blown away with it! Ray,you've reached brand
new heights with this one,and it's sure to be a huge hit with Ray
fans,and those who are not.As usual when I buy a Ray/Kinks album,I
listen to them and try to pick up on any 'faults.' There is nothing here
to complain about. The writing and re-arrangements are superb through
out. The whole album has that obvious etherial ring about it,and it's
extremely difficult to say that one number sounds better than the
rest,so I won't. Nice to see also that the cover image: William Blake's
God writing upon the tables of The Covenant was licensed fromThe
National Galleries of Scotland - my part of the world,in the GB. Great
also to see that Ray is getting more TV coverage in the UK - sorry,but I
can't comment on the coverage he's getting in The USA - but I must
imagine he is getting plenty there also,as well as the rest of the world
- and not before time! It's good to see him looking so well,and more
relaxed!

Hi everyone,

10 minutes ago in German radio WDR 2 there was a 5 minutes special about
Ray. They played a bit of VRGM and DFOF and at the end Lola
(completely). I was quite surprised because they almost never play the
Kinks, but my husband who had heard the beginning (and had called me)
told me, that the speaker had talked of Ray being 75 today! I suppose
they wouldn't have mentioned his birthday at all hadn't he made this
mistake! Anyway, it was great to hear it.

Happy birthday to Ray and a nice Sunday to all of you!

Well it's a mix of The KOKs and KOKs2 as Nobby is standing in for Jim, as
Jim is in the US. So this will be a unique gig.

Anyway, I have two spare tickets for this event. Cost #14 each (#18 on the
day).

This is an afternoon and evening festival. I have been two times before and
it's a great day out. Organised by Pete Watkins (who sings at the Kinks
Konventions) and he plays with his band very late in the evening.

many, many reactions on the passing of Herman Gombert, Kinksfan from the
First hour and brilliant guitarplayer.

At his cremation, coincidentally a day full of sunshine, the music played

As Olga stated, I also hope there will be a Roll Of Honor (on Dave Emlen's

last years, like Katie Richards, only 14 years of age.

(I was under the impression of the piece Curtis Richards had sent in for her
on June 20th.)

Hiroshi was one of the most dedicated KINKS fans I've ever met. When He and
Yoshi stayed at my apartment in Amsterdam, they brought many, many gifts.
Two of Hiroshis gifts were my introduction to Hello Kitty. I still have the
Kitty Klock. He always sent me Happy New Years cards and was generous in so
many ways. I am very lucky to have known him and my condolences go out to
his mother and everyone touched by his kindness.

Dear Kinks Fans: I visited Hiroshi and stayed at his home in Japan a couple
time. He was Mr.Wonderful. I spoke very little Japanese. And he spoke very
little English. So we would communicate with the use of Kinks songs and
phrases. Such as it was a Sunny Afternoon on a Deadend street in a Foreign
land. He would take me through the back streets of the Tokyo. Looking for
Kinks bootleg albums. At night we would listen to Kinks music Sitting on his
sofa with an ice cold beer. Like most Kinks fans. He was a bit of a Misfit.
And definitively Not like anybody else.
He once came to visit me at my home in Sacramento. The Kinks Kapital of
Kalifornia. He wanted to go Drivin in my 1970 Chevy Nova Kinks mobile. We
went On the road to see the Motherlode in the song Did Ya. We also visited
Mustang Ranch brothel because he wanted to meet a Blonde floozie with big
tits. And he did. I think her name was either Gerty or Pamela. But he came
out of there with a big smile on his Babyface. We then went Sitting in my
hotel's hot tub in the desert of Nevada. Looking up at the Big Sky looking
down at us. I think he said that it was the first he had ever seen that many
star of the Milky Way galaxy. We shared many great time together on his
visit to my House in country.
I waited every New Years for his Kinks New Year card. He would never fail
to send me one. He would even send one to my Mother. Because she had invited
him to her home for her famous spaghetti and meatballs dinner. With most of
my family there.Even my Brother and Two sisters.
I will never forget Hiroshi. I would just like to thank him for the Days.

Subject: Hiroshi Uchida

Hiroshi and Yoshi are the only two Japanese fans
(and THE two Japanese fans!) who I've met.
Both have visited me in Holland in the past.
Younger Yoshi had studied in the USA and spoke
English (or shall I say American?) very well,
while older Hiroshi hardly spoke the language.
It was quite hard to have a conversation with Hiroshi,
but sometimes you don't need words to understand eachother
and with Hiroshi that certainly was the case.
You just KNOW when somebody has the 'Kinks feeling'
and Hiroshi surely had. We swapped a lot of Kinks covers.
I'm probably exagerating when I say that the number
of Japanese fans has been deminished with 50%
(apologies to all the other Japanese fans),
but this is what I feel right now.

I already wrote to some other fans that most of us
have come to an age when you must be very happy
when you're healthy or still alive!
My daughter was turning 23 on the 21st of June,
I even know a guy who turned 65 that day,
today is my 4th wedding anniversary with Peggy
and coming friday my mother is turning 79
and another dear friend is turning 60.
And then you hear what happend to Hiroshi.
He surely passed away much too young.
My condolences to his family and a lot of strength
to all the other people who knew him very well,
especially Yoshi, Olga, Urs and Ruud.

Sunday from 9am. His first show will go out on July 4.

Speaking to Xfm Manchester's Clint Boon, Davies admitted, "It's the
first steady job I've had. It's been difficult to pick stuff to cover

KINKS leading man Ray Davies is one of pop's most gifted songwriters.
The 1967 hit Waterloo Sunset was once hailed by rock writer Robert
Christgau as "the most beautiful song in the English language".

The singer's latest work is a collaboration with the Crouch End Festival
Chorus.

ALBUM REVIEW - RAY DAVIES: THE KINKS CHORAL COLLECTION

What made you want to hear choral adaptations of Kinks songs?

When we made those records in the old days, we'd go into the studio, lay
down the tracks and vocals and put the thing out. The process was so
rapid, we never had time to think beyond making a two and a half minute
record. I am not saying The Kinks were displeased with the results, we
made some tremendous records, but a song like See My Friends, for
example, presents so many possibilities for experimentation. The
inspiration behind that particular recording on the new album was
hearing Indian Fishermen singing and chanting.

You are from Muswell Hill, and the choir is based in neighbouring Crouch
End. Was it important to use a local outfit?

Generally, I like to work within my district. My guitarist of the last
five years I met walking down the road in Crouch End.

Half of the Choral Collection is devoted to one of the Kinksa most
celebrated albums, 1968's The Village Green Preservation Society, a wry,
nostalgic look at fading traditional values. Would you dare write
something like that today?

I know what you mean. The thing is, Britain was always a diverse,
multicultural place, so writing something about English values was
always going to be a risk, even though people were not as prickly about
race or nationality back then. I think I would write an album like that
because those values are important to me and the people I grew up
around. But that's not to the exclusion of anyone else. Britain has
always been a liberal country and long may it remain one, but I believe
that anyone who comes here should swear some sort of allegiance -
everyone is welcome to live here but certain laws or rules should be
obeyed.

You mean swearing allegiance to queen and country?

Oh no, not at all. I mean we should have an English constitution, like the
US have. One that protects the secular values of freedom and so on.

I see. I just want to change the subject a little -

Oh please do!

What do you feel about youth culture today?

Well there's such diversity, kids have so much at their disposal, and
yet so little.

How do you mean?

For instance I was watching a group of girls in this restaurant
recently, and they were all engrossed in their mobile phones but there
wasn't much conversation going on which I think is sad. It seems that
when something is gained, something else is lost. If a young person
wants to know something they can just look it up on Google - rather
than have the experience of researching it. The experience that goes
with finding something out is being lost - and I think that's
dangerous. We have generations of kids growing up now forming
relationships through Facebook and so on and that strikes me as
unhealthy. I wonder how it affects their development. Maybe I am wrong,
maybe it's too early to say.

How do you feel about acquiring music by downloading?

I dunno, it's cheap which is good if you are young but it all seems so
disposable. If you go out of your way to acquire a CD or even vinyl it
sort of demonstrates that you really want to own something, it has
permanence.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I am going through a country music phase, strangely enough...

I've known Olga for a long while now and Lynn and I count her amongst our
best friends. Geoff Lewis introduced me to her back in the mid 1990's at
the London fan club meet, when it was still held at the Archway Tavern, and
we've been firm friends ever since. I remember her 50th birthday party, but
it doesn't seem like ten years ago! She's one of the most generous people I
know, in just about every way possible, and she willingly gives up her time
to Kinks fans from around the world, for tours and general assistance.
She's the best actress I know (I would recommend getting along to see her in
one of her regular dramatic productions in Basildon) and she's a vital
element of the Kinks tribute band, The Spivs!

Lynn and I will miss her birthday, because we will be back home in Spain,
but it's a measure of her friendship that when we needed someone to
co-ordinate our wedding gifts and to do a reading at our wedding, it was
Olga we asked, and she of course rose to the occasion.

Olga has been fantastic. She is the even-handed anti-dote to our occasional
'Mindless child(s) of Motherhood," arguments on the KPS site, and by that I
mean that she always says the right thing, at the right time. She's got good
information. You know her aim is true when it comes to Ray, Dave and the
Kinks in general. She was there from the beginning and continues to be one
of the their biggest supporters on the planet.

She's like "Krankiekat," only without the obnoxious NJ accent and she has
boobies. So, I guess she's not like him. But I digress.

I worked closely with Olga when putting together a tribute to Neil O. for
this hard work on our little KPS thing. She was a firm guiding hand, helping
this Attention Deficit wracked and immature American genius (uh, me) who is
also a shy, demure and egoless talented writer do his thing. It came out
nicely and it wouldn't have happened without her.

Right now, a trip to the UK is out of the question because of a lack of
fundage but I can assure you that I would make big plans to take Olga out
for a spot of tea or din din should that happy day come that I can visit.
Once the trials are over and the guillotines have had their way with our
enemies, I vision hoisting a pint in some historically-significant roadhouse
to her, the Kinks, and by God, The Queen even.

When I saw that she'd won "Fan of the Year' by the KOKS last year, I
couldn't think of anyone more fitting. She's firing on all eight cylinders,
that gal, and I really can't believe that she's reached the seniority of 60
damned years old. My God, woman, I have scars older than you! You look not a
day over 40, tightly packed into that beautiful skin, eyes, hair and smile.
You ought to see her walking away!! Why, if I wasn't 45,000,000 miles away
behind the sun, dating half the town, I'd rush over there and rescue you
from a life of drudgery that I'm told by my great friend Darles Chickens
still exists.

Olga, kiss kiss hug hug, L.A. style. Lova ya babe....and I mean that. You
are beautiful. Don't ever change. If you get to S. Calif., have your girl
call mine and we'll set something up.

One thing's clear, it's hard to keep up with Olga no matter how many years
she's celebrating. Did you say 60? Make that 2 x 30. That's a better
expression to describe the energy level on which Olga thrives. Whether she
dancing, singing, acting, writing, you name it, she always seems to be the
younger one.

I remember our first 2 mails: I wrote about 2 lines and she beat me by
replying in 1 line. I thought it wouldn't add up to much but after a few
months on the alt.fan.kinks usenet (Where have all the good times gone?)we
started writing more and more and even if some of it was mostly nonsense, it
always came from the heart. At one point I was Sir Percival Blakeney and
Olga would be Lady Marguerite, and so we grew together to the point of
desperately needing to meet which we did at The Stairway to Heaven, Utrecht.
We met a number of times after that and it was always great fun to see Olga
working her way through giant Brussels waffles or swallowing down a
chocolate beer. Who else would try that?

But Olga is also an art lover who can teach you a few things and of course
she's the mother of all Kinksfans but most of all she's a very warm,
generous and gentle person with a big heart.

These days I don't write too much, in fact I hardly write anything at all
and so I haven't written much to Olga lately either, which is so wrong of
me. So Olga, I haven't forgotten about you! Happy Birthday! May you live at
least another 2 x 30 years before you rock a last time!

I first became aware of Olga thanks to the digest, enjoying her
insightful comments and being a little jealous of her intimacy with the
boys. I guess it was around spring or early summer of 2000, when Dave's
New England tour was announced, that I suggested that Olga come and stay
with us in NYC (we finally had a guestroom). So late the night of 28
July, my husband Jeff & I went to JFK, Olga sign in hand, and met her
flight. I felt an immediate bond with this dark curly-haired dynamo.
Olga stayed with us off and on for the following weeks, leaving to go to
shows outside of NYC. Then, when Ray's NYC shows were announced, Olga
was back 23-27 August. I remember the day she left, I bought white
lilies and took dropped them at Ray's appt back when he lived on the
upper west side. She gave me the courage to actually leave something
with the concierge at his building (and I think I signed the card from
Olga & Ellen).

Through Olga, I've met many of you, and I thank her for that. But my
biggest thank you to Olga, goes to her being a dear friend with whom,
over the years, in addition to the Kinks, we shared emails about our
lives, our children, and how wonderful (I'm being facetious now) aging
has been (weight, wrinkles, and all the other joys).

Happy Kinks 45th year of fandom, and have a wonderful 60th. It really
isn't soooooo bad.

How long do I know you now?

I think it must be 17 years, 'cause Broxbourne in 1994 was the first
Kinks meeting I attended and I doubt it if I missed you at that time.

I don't know when we started to hold eachother and sing harmonies
whenever The Kast Off Kinks or Ray Davies were singing Days,
but I want you to know that it has always been a highlight for me
during those gigs.

During the 10th Kinks fan meeting in Holland
while KOK2 were doing their first set
I was upstairs with Ray in the dressing room of Stairway To Heaven.
He asked me which songs he should play
and I told him it would be wonderful if he would do Shangri-La
(it was only a minor hit in Holland).
We looked at the original play list, and in the second set
Shangri-La was scheduled before Waterloo sunset and You really got me.
Well, I'll do those 3 songs then, Ray said.
At that time I saw that KOK2 was about to start Days,
so I told Ray "Sorry, but I must go down now to sing Days".
Ray asked me "Are you going to sing Days???"
and I answered "Yeah... with Olga".

We DID sing Days again while holding eachother,
and hopefully we can do so for many years to come.

I met Olga by Waterloo Bridge in 1997 where we shared my first meeting of
Mr. R.D. Davies and she helpfully snapped photographs. After returning from
cloud 9 I learned first-hand Kinks history over dinner. I take great pride
in being the one to introduce her to the KPS, via printouts I mailed her.
Several concerts followed, each a highlight, though sitting next to Olga in
the front row at the second one was extra memorable.

Fast-forward to 2000 and Raving Dave shows in Boston with Olga, Kate and
Jill. A wild and fun-filled few days with the Kats.

Olga has a heart full of love and song. She brings it to the world every day
and I'm lucky I've gotten to know her and share some wonderful times with
her. She is a rare gem. Thank you for the days, my friend.

I got the following message from my friend in Tokyo.
I'll post it here with her permission.

I heard that Hiroshi had actually recovered when he was in hospital. His
mother had stayed with him overnight and the next day he was able to
move and speak and was doing well. She gave him the news that we were
all worried about him and he understood and was wanting to go home too.
So the doctors told his mother that she could go home, then later she
got a phone call to say that he had died suddenly.

What happened was that the hospital staff began to massage his leg as
they decided to get him onto rehabilitation as soon as possible. After
the stroke there was a clogged artery inside his body somewhere and the
massage being vigorous moved the clogged formation up through his veins
and made its way into his lungs and this stopped him from breathing. So
he actually died not from a stroke but from suffocation. That is really
sad news because Mr.....(another fan) thinks that if they had waited
just a few days before massaging him he would still be alive. The
hospital asked his mother if she wanted to proceed with a malpractice
investigation but she said nothing they could do would bring her son
back and no thank you. That is the best way, we think it also. But what
a sad story to know. It is important to know that you should not do any
rehabilitation too soon after a stroke and certainly nothing too
vigorous too soon.

We are so saddened to hear this story and we all are still crying so
much, but we and his mother have already forgiven the hospital staff -
after all he was a man who broke some rules too.

Subject: Hiroshi and the Kinks

Hiroshi was hardly known to the American fans, except Doug Hinman and a
few others, because he didn't travel to America at all for
Kinks/Ray/Dave shows. He, instead, flew to the UK many times simply
because the Kinks were a British band. Therefore, he didn't get to
attend Dave 's solo gigs until Dave went on tour in Europe in Autumn
2001. I vividly remember how excited he was!

Hiroshi was too young to go across the river..... he was in his 50's. He
was a high school boy when he first discovered the Kinks. Like many
others he was following the music of the Be atles, until one day he
heard a Ray Davies composition "All Day And All Of The Night" on the
radio. He always told me how blown away he was at that moment by the
simple and yet powerful riffs delivered by Dave Davies. In the 60s Kinks
records were very hard to get in Japan but he managed to obtain "Kinks
Size" and "Kinkdom".

The very first Kinks album Hiroshi bought on its 'original release date'
was "Face To Face" and he just kept on playing and playing it repeatedly
on his turntable. "Too Much On My Mind " was his most favourite song on
that album. 29 years later in Tokyo on their To The Bone tour '95, Dave
sang "Too Much On My Mind". He used to always tell me about the moment
Dave started singing it, "I was so moved that I couldn't stop tears
falling from my eyes."

Another tune he fell in love with was "You're Looking Fine" (I am
quoting from his web site which is dedicated to the Kinks called "My
Heart Lies In Muswell Hill", formarly known as "Too Much On My Mind").
He digged the piano and Dave's guitar solo on it.

Written, by some people who had met Hiroshi, that he spoke little
English, you may wonder how on earth he could enjoy listeing to the
Kinks. As for understanding the lyrics, one doesn't have to be able to
"speak" the language. If he knows the words in a song, he can look them
up in a dictionary. He can improve his listening skills by listening to
those songs he likes (which I did). He can even write fan letters to his
favourite musicians with his dictionaries in his hand. "Speaking" is the
most difficult part when learning a foreign langauge, especially when
there are no native speakers of the language around him.

In Japan English is a compulsory subject in high school from Year 7 all
the way up to Year 1 2. Hiroshi had studied it for, at least, 6 years,
so he could read and write fairly well and also could understand what
was said in songs. Even in the 60s records by foreign musicians sold in
Japan all came with the lyrics sheet and the Japanese translations. If
the original didn't have one, the record company would hire a translator
who would listen to the whole album and write the words down and then
translate them into Japanese although, of course, some mistakes in the
process couldn't be avoided.

If you remember when we first met, my fellow American friends, my
English had been proven good enough to enrol into an American
univeristy and yet my "speaking" skill was not that good . Do you agree?
I hope I am making myself understood here.

The two main reasons why Hiroshi (not just him but many of us I guess)
fell in love with the Kinks were:

1. Dave's unique and powerful guitar style
2. Ray's talent in songwriting (of which the lyrics make the important part)

I hope that you all understand how Hiroshi could love the Kinks songs so
much despite his not-so-good English speaking skills.

Hiroshi was shy, however, every time he got to meet Ray at the venue
before/after a show he would give Ray a little gift and say a phrase or
two polietly "I hope we'll see you in Japan " or something like that. He
did it for the members of Kast Off Kinks as well. I can also visualise
him doing the same to Dave in Europe although I was never there with
him.

In the last 8 years or so Hiroshi travelled to the UK every year to see
Ray. He would usually stay there for 2-3 weeks, following Ray & his
crew from one town to another, day after day. And every time he came
back home from his trip to the UK, his suitcases were full of souvenirs
from, mainly, Muswell Hill for other Japanese kinks fans. He was such a
devoted fan who lived for the Kinks music.

I've been a Kinks fan since my junior year in high school which was 1981. I
bought the Kinks Choral Collection from Amazon UK, and I was pleasantly
surprised how good the album was based on the less than stellar reviews I
have read. I've learned over the years that when the reviews are bad, the
album sells, but when the reviews are good, the album does not sell so well.
Based on the reviews I've read, I was not surprised to see the album open at
#28 on the UK charts. Congrats Ray! Standout tracks for me are YRGM, Days,
Waterloo Sunset, Sharngri-la, and the entire VGPS medley with the
exception of the song VGPS which I didn't care for because I thought
Ray's voice was drowned out by the choir and sounded weak. I also
didn't care for the treatment of ADAAOTN and felt the song was not
enhanced at all, but I'm willing to bet Ray had to include that due to
the record company and had no choice. I think Misfits or A Rock-n-Roll
Fantasy would both sound great with the Crouch End Festival Chorus
backing them.

I give the album a B+ overall and agree with Ray's own assessment that the
songs are enhanced as opposed to simply having a choir act as backup and
turning the whole project into a karaoke exercise. Would be great to see
Ray tour the U.S. with the choir. I would love to hear the choir with other
Kinks songs as well.

How wonderful was that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?? And what an amazing surprise! Thank

now know how both Neil and Dave Emlen felt when we revealed our tributes to
them! It is really quite overwhelming. Thank you everyone who posted such
lovely sentiments, I was quite awash with tears at such kindness.

Maybe this is something to cheer us up when we are sorrowing over Michael
Jackson. Celebrating birthdays is an affirmation of Life. I hope he is at
peace now and teaching the angels how to moonwalk!

I was so sorry to hear about Hiroshi's death, and fully support the
wonderful idea of having a Kinks Fan Honor Roll for those who have
passed on. I briefly met Hiroshi a few times at shows, and he was a fan
known for his incredible devotion and generosity, as clearly seen in the
lovely stories people have told here in the digest already.

If something good can come of his passing, perhaps it is the heads-up
for us to be more aware of the danger of pulmonary embolisms, apparently
the cause of his death. I am stunned, just stunned to hear that the
medical staff was massaging the legs of a new stroke victim. The legs
are where many blood clots form during inactivity and their movement
into the system into the lungs is more common than you would think. My
mother-in-law nearly died a few years ago from this. She was in Las
Vegas, tripped on a curb, and broke her shoulder. The hospital staff
suggested she fly home for further treatment. Flying so soon after this
type of injury caused clots, and soon after arrving home she was
terrified because she felt she could not breathe. She had four clots in
her lungs, which were dissolved just in time to save her life. She has
to be on the blood-thinner Coumadin for the rest of her life now.

My condolences to Hiroshi's family and friends around the world.

In 1995 I went to Japan with two Friends of mine to see the Kinks Tour
in the Land of the Rising Sun. Nobody of us speaks Japanese,so without
Hiroshi we would have been completely lost. He showed us Places of
interest and we stayed overnight in his House. This Travel to Japan was
a unique experience for me.I met Hiroshi several times again , in
Edinburgh (Rays Storyteller Shows), in Germany 2001 (Dave Davies
Tour)and a several Times in England (Ray and Band). Hiroshi was such a
nice Guy, I will never forget him.

Subject: Dave Davies' Mystical Journey

I went to the Dave Davies website and purchased Dave's new DVD, 'Mystical
Journey,' and watched it the other night. I found it very interesting and
enjoyable. The main subject of the film is on Dave's interest throughout
his life in matters beyond the mundane. The film touches on meditation, the
occult, astrology, and related topics. This interest in matters beyond the
mundane has been a prime motivator for Dave throughout his life, and
clearly helped him deal with his stroke and aftermath of the stroke.

In the film, Dave comes across as being very sincere about the subject of
the spiritual life, and a serious student of writers who have dealt with
these subjects. I realize some fans consider this aspect of Dave to be
somewhat odd, but even for those who feel this way (maybe especially for
those), I believe this movie will be interesting and enjoyable. The movie
conveys a good feeling for Dave's sincere, almost scholarly interest in
these matters. I don't think it's possible to understand what makes Dave
tick without taking a look at this aspect of him.

It's also worth mentioning that there is plenty of content in the film
about the Kinks and music. For example, there are vintage home movies of
the Davies family, a really fun clip of David Nolte and Dave talking about
music and recording music, and a clip of Dave performing "Creepin' Jean"
which must have been from that last show he did in Europe shortly before
the stroke (because the drummer is not Jim Laspesa ... who WAS the drummer
for that gig? ... was it Dave's son?). That clip made me almost cry with
nostalgia for the wonderful days of following Dave's solo tours.

Right now our Kinks kommunity is mourning the passing of several of our
members. It's often at times like these that people turn to their religion
or to their spirituality for comfort. And for this reason, I also think the
timing of this film is appropriate.

out of Holland/The Netherlands for many years in the 70's. Except for
Katie, I had the pleasure and honor to know them all.

arrived yesterday but I was not at home so had to wait until today to go
down to the post office to pick it up... I just listened to the first 3

is " Hallelujah " RAY REALLY IS ERIC CLAPTON aka what rhymes with
COD! LOL!!! I NOT ONLY LOVE IT, I WORSHIP IT, I can only compare it so
far as to a religious experience and like being at the place that I

As part of its pledge drive, WTMD, the best of Baltimore's noncommercial
radio stations, has been counting down the top 897 artists as voted by
its listeners. (The number isn't arbitrary: The station broadcasts at
89.7 FM.) I pledged last night when they finally reached the Kinks, who
charted at a respectable #49. Ray Davies also slipped into the bottom of
the chart as a solo artist, at #859. They played "Working Man's Cafe"
when they got to Ray, and they played a bigger set when they reached the
rest of the band: "Lola," "You Really Got Me," "Do It Again," "The
Village Green Preservation Society," and "Victoria."

Actually, now I think about it, you must be that age given the teenage
anecdotes of Muswell Hill. Apart from that, I'd never have put you anywhere
near as old as me. I first met Olga at an early (the first?) Archway Tavern
bash. I've got a feeling there were email communications after I started
posting to KPS before that, but I entered that room and I pretty much the
first thing I said to anybody (apart from, "A pint of Guinness, please" at
the bar) was, "You must be Olga", she introduced me to the other Spivs and
many others and the occasion has been one of the highlights of my year ever
since. Exuberance, individuality and selflessness - as our new buddy
William Blake would say, 'Without contraries is no prgression'. She sells a
mean raffle ticket. I won a signed photo of Ray one year; the signature
faded in the sun but the memory remains!

I first heard about Olga on the Kinks mailing list long
before she joined us online. I think the only other
Kinks fans whose reputation preceded them like that were
Frank Lima and Frank Reda!

Olga is the Kinks fan who keeps on giving. There has
been several times when someone will contact me through
my web site, looking for advice on Kinks sites to see
when visiting London. I would just send them to Olga
and she would meet them under the clock at Waterloo
Station and take them on a tour! She has also helped
fans get an autograph from Ray outside the stage door
at shows. She does this for no other reason than to
share her love of the Kinks with other fans.

Happy Birthday Olga! I'm looking forward to seeing
you again at the Fan Club Konvention in October!

year' We first met when Jackie and I attended Ray's, 'Come Dancing' at
Stratford East, when we were with Geoff and his wife. You look more like
50 than 60, and from what I have read from The KinK's Digest, you have
certainly shown a lot of kindness to many KinKs fans over the years.
Like you I have followed(from afar - in Scotland)The Boys, and seen&met
them live on many occasions.My first meeting with them was in April
1967, inside Pye studios. I was in London for three months doing a
course with the local Police at that time. I saw and heard Ray add his
voice to 'Polly' - the 'B' side to 'Wonderboy.' We all then went for a
drink to The Masons Arms in Marble Arch (OK! - I was only 17 at the time
and drinking a pint while unde age!!) but what a great experience.I was
only a young kid, and in my element meeting my favourite group. Have a
wonderful birthday Olga, don't get too drunk(ha, ha) - and remember I've
just been there, and I don't feel any older.

on Friday, October 23rd (support the tribute band The Small Fakers).

Subject: KPS Honor Roll

Neil,

I agree with Frank's addition to the honor roll of fans who have passed
on. I would like to add one more which I'm sure Frank will agree
with...Lillian Roxon. She was the author of The Rock Encyclopedia and a
staunch Kinks supporter, often seen around New York City with her "Kinks
Society" button (which she probably got from Frank!).

Also, I was shocked to hear that Ben Derksen had died. We corresponded
a great deal, especially in the 70s and 80s and, even when that cooled
off, he always sent me a Christmas card. Now, not only do I feel like
an idiot for wondering what happened to his Christmas cards, I also feel
a deep sense of loss.

So count me in as another supporter for the Honor Roll of Kinks Fans.
It seems we're all reaching the age where we're worrying less about God
saving The Kinks (as a band), and worrying more about God saving The
Kinks' Fans.

Someone I know who definitely (maybe) belongs in the "Top of the Pops"
Hall of Fame list for most dedicated Kinks fans is NORMAN MEDER of
Sacramento, Ca. Hands down he is biggest fan I personally know. Met him
at a Dave Davies concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco several years
ago when Dave first started touring solo and have kept an enduring
friendship with him throughout the years although I live on the East
Coast.
He is the brother of the more humble "Other Frank."

Like everyone, I was saddened to hear of the recent and untimely passings of
at least three rabid Kinks fans (and the mention of several more). I am
particularly depressed by the death of this young lady. So young and so much
ahead of her. It begs the question, "why?," but there is no answer. See!
I told you I was sad and depressed. This is where I would normally insert a
non-funny and obnoxious joke but I think I'll skip it and just vacuum my
rugs.

very close to dying that way (and eventually did). Keep out of hospitals.

need to replace OPL as someone borrowed it and never returned it! OPL
has been out of print for some time and the prices were high at various
spots. I noticed it was for sale at Ray's site for I think 10.99
pounds or 11.99 same with the Choral release. Before ordering I check
CDWOW.com where I have bought LOTS of imports, free shipping, good
prices and found the following(on their US site). I bought the Choral
release for $13.49 USA, and they have OPL being re-released(in the UK
but you can buy it at CDWOW US site) for $12.59 again with no US tax or
shipping charge-they charged 50 cents for insurance. They also have
Working Man's Cafe on sales-limited quantity for $3.99 US dollars-again
with free shipping. I have bought from Ray's site before but with me
living on a LOW BUDGET-I thought everyone may want this info! OPL is
being released on 7/28 per their website, the Choral CD is available
now. Better to get this now than wait till September. Now I can see
whether I agree, disagree or land in the middle of the reviews....Mr

Subject: More thoughts about Come Dancing in 2010...

This is very likely to be a preliminary test production run to get the
kinks out LOL, before the highly anticipated West End Production in the
Spring and maybe just maybe a NYC run which would be the stepping stone
to BROADWAY!!! I strongly urge anyone who did not see it at the
Stratford theatre in London last year to see this limited run in January
because sooner or later the future runs will probably not have Ray in
them (unless he decides to take it on the road on tour? )

Subject: London 2012 and Kinks fans who have passed away

I have sent a message to the London 2012 Committee (however you spell it)
saying the following:

'Please, please, please have The Kinks play Waterloo Sunset at either the
opening or closing ceremony. I feel that that song perfectly sums up the
beauty of London and England. It is a truely beautiful song. It was written
by the most Englsh person in the world, Ray Davies, who was a member of the
most distinctly English band in the world who very much focussed on where
they were from in their songs/albums. Ray Davies and The Kinks have always
had a love for England and the place he (they) grew up in, Muswell Hill, and
I am very proud to have them as a part of my English herritage.'

I hope they listen to us and invite them to play. That would be such a
momentous moment and could kick start their reuniuon with it!!!

On a sadder note, I would like to add my condolences to the families and
friends of all those Kinks fans who have passed. I feel very sad that I
never knew Katie Richards and Hirosha and all the other wonderful people.
Although I have never known any of those sadly missed Kinks fans, I am left
wishing I had, yet at the same time relieved that I hadn't so that I
wouldn't have to deal with the immense grief that their friends and family
are feeling.

We all have one thing in common on this digest, so it is a big deal when we
lose someone from this digest. The Kinks are an integral part of our lives,
and to know that there was someone else out there who held the same mindset
as me and is no longer with us makes me feel very depressed that I never
knew them.

Subject: A very rainy day in June

After booking tickets to see Come Dancing in 2010 we set off on the two hour
journey to Kenwood- Nth London

The sun was shining and despite the sad loss of Michael Jackson all seemed
well with the world

We arrived at Kenwood at about 3 p.m, a beautiful venue, the stage in a
natural ampitheatre not unlike the Hollywood bowl only with deckchairs!
The stage was set up just a few yards away from where the Village Green
Preservation album cover photos were taken all those years ago.

Anyway as we walked nearer the stage Ray came on with the choir for the
soundcheck, what a bonus.

It sounded beautiful and they went through various bits and pieces for about
half an hour, wonderful moments.

We then went and had our picnic under the shade of an old oak tree in the
beautiful gardens surrounding the House and Stage.

And then... rain rain rain and even more rain, only interrupted by hail
thunder and lightning.

Everyone scattered for shelter but there was no escape it poured and poured
for a solid two hours , the deck chairs were soaking and the ground sodden.
Eventually at about 6.30 the rain did stop and the concert started on time
at 7.30 ish.

Karin and her band did a short set which included a song from who she
described as " The great man" called Auntie Maria.A typical Ray song about
someone emigrating across the Atlantic leaving their roots and culture
behind whilst taking it with them at the same time and spreading it across
the USA

Anyway the rain had thankfully stopped and at about 8.15 on sauntered Ray
Started with Not like everybody else, Where have all the good times gone and
basically the same tried and trusted set that we have become used to.. The
crowd were joining in and loving it, he was on good form, we were on good
form

He introduced a new drummer only by his initials GD but it was good to see
Ian on the keyboards again.

About 45 minutes in Ray introduced the choir and they joined in with a
joyous rendition of Dedicated Follower... but then disaster. It rained and
it rained and it rained.

Umbrellas went up and despite that we got very very wet for the 2nd time !
Ray soldiered on and did the complete suite from Village Green as on the
Choral Album and finished with You Really Got me, Days, All Day... Waterloo
Sunset, Lola and Low Budget

It really was a memorable night for more reasons than one but it was great
to see Ray looking so fit and well.

If only we could have had the bluest of sky

Subject: Ray at Kenwood House on a 'Rainy day in June' - Yep!

Yes, we are not kidding! started out a fabulous day, 'blue skies and the
hottest day so far. Packed our picnic and away we went from Surrey to North
London. We gave ourselves plenty of time to get there as there were
railworks going on!!

The underground trains were warm (understatement!), makeup running down our
faces we managed to get the 210 bus to Kenwood...horray, we finally made it
in one piece. Kenwood House was standing there majestically in the beautiful
grounds overlooking London town (took our breath away). We made our way to
the concert area watching the guys setting up the stage...and there it was,
that magnificant blue guitar, polished and gleaming (sigh!).

We sat under the oak tree singing 'Village Green' appropriately, unpacking
our salmon picnic as we went along. Got out the union jack tablecloth and
serviettes and rug and settled for a couple of hours 'sipping at our ice
cold beer' before Ray was due on stage.

We thought this is nice! just as we said it....a clap of thunder and few
spots of rain dropped into our laps. This won't last!!!! we were right and
carried on slowly getting more 'relaxed' with almost a whole bottle of wine
gone and opening another.

It all went down hill from then on, literally, rivers flowing from one of
the biggest thunderstorms and still sitting there, saying it wont last,
finally, we gave in and sheltered with everyone else under the toilet tent
(incidentally all the loo's were locked) but we opened another bottle with
everyone in good spirit for an hour or two!

The rain had stopped, at long last! we sat in our deckchairs with our rain
macs on, soaking wet, but this did not deter the fans - oh no! Karin and her
band (the something sisters - help me out here, anyone! sorry I don't mean
to offend) came on quite relaxed singing country songs (lovely). Finally,
Ray and the band came on to a raptuous applaud... and this is what they sang
- (forgive me if it's not in the right order - the old brains not what it
used to be):

(The Crouch End Choir came on stage around this time, I think!)

At this point Ray offered to join us in the RAIN but carried on. He was
feeling sorry for us by this time, as the rain got heavier and heavier! but
we were in good spirits and sang and danced, had a few more drinks:

A short review.....

Ray at Kenwood House- 27/06/09

Well it promised to be such a memorable night........

My wife and I booked tickets for this ages ago- even shunning my own
Brothers birthday BBQ to make sure we got to the gig on time. The
afternoon was a scorcher and we couldn't wait to get to the gig, get an
ice cool beer, and watch Ray et al., on a beautiful summers evening. We
set off and it was blue skies overhead but in the distance there was a
darkness looming.......

As we approached the North Circular things had got worse and fork
lightning was striking all around on the horizon. Localised flooding
meant that the traffic stacked up and we ended up taking 2 and a half
hours to get there. Still with over 60 Kinks/Ray/Dave albums on the ipod
the journey was good.

On arrival we parked the car with ease (despite the warnings on the
Kenwood house website that there was no parking anywhere near the venue)
and we climbed the hill as in the distance the opening chords of Till
the end of the day were played.

So we missed the beginning- it didn't matter, we could hear him and the
evening had turned into a misty hazy muggy affair but the tropical
storms that we had seen on the way in had disappeared......

Things were good, Ray was on top form and played a few tracks before
bringing the choir into play. I have to say that being quite close to
the front-the choir really did add an extra dimension and power to the
classics but if you were away from the front section the extra affect
they brought disappeared totally. Anyway, we had the beer, we had our
deckchairs, we had the music......things were good!

However, about 6 tracks in I felt a spot of rain, then another, then
another. We had brought an umbrella and the wife had on a waterproof
jacket and we figured that even if it did rain, it was still warm.....

AND THEN IT DID RAIN- I think it was halfway through Victoria that it
got serious. It absolutely lashed it down- torrential rain. People
started to leave their seats and head for shelter- although there was
really nowhere to go.....

My wife and I huddled under the umbrella until the masses decided to
stand and so we all danced and played in the rain as Ray serenaded us
with belter after belter! 45 minutes of torrential downpour- a fantastic
night was had by all!! This really was an exceptional gig and those who
were brave enough to stick around and enjoy a typically British night!!

Subject: The Kinks Choral Collection

I am listening to the Kinks Choral Collection for the first time. For me it
completes the circle in Kinkdom.
Music began for me when I was 12 years old and heard "You Really Got Me" for
the first time. The hair stood up on my neck when I first heard
ADAATN. It still does. I consider it the greatest riff in rock music.

The Kinks and Ray were at the Vanguard for many innovations, few of
which he gets credit for or that where a commercial success. The choral
collection is just such an innovation and I pray it receives the due it
deserves.

It is also interesting the choices Ray made from his huge catalog of
songs. To me the collection from Village Green Preservation assures its
greatness in music history and will be considered Ray's high water mark.
To my taste "Village Green" is the hands down best on this collection. I
wish it generates interest in the original recordings as well as the
choral collection. Thank you Ray for all the joy your music has brought
me over my lifetime. You never were like anyone else....

through 1984 and, briefly in 1975, for Clone The Word, Inc. Most of these
programs feature an original cover illustration by Moyssi, created
specifically for each concert.

Almost every cover depicts something about the performing artist, album,
song or tour title, or some tidbit from the band bio. One cover for the
Rolling Stones graphically alludes to 25 album titles in a single
illustration. These illustrations were created more for fun than for art, to
challenge music fans to puzzle out a subtle, obscure, berserk or groping
connection between the cover art and the performing artists who were the
subject of each program.

These programs were distributed at 16 different venues in New York and
New Jersey, ranging in size from tiny John Harms Englewood Plaza Theatre
to Giants Stadium and everything in between including -most dearly - the
Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, where Moyssi was resident stage
lighting director from 1971 to 1986. This website is dedicated to the
memory of John Scher's Capitol Theatre on its 35th anniversary.

The Capitol Theatre, according to Billboard Magazine in 1980, was "the
No.1 concert hall in the nation under 6,000 seats." The Capitol had the
best acoustical environment (2-inch thick acoustical padding on the
interior walls), an unobstructed view of the stage from every seat and
the best bands in the world, including The Grateful Dead, The Who, Bruce
Springsteen, the Rolling Stones - and just about everyone else who
toured in the 70s and 80s. The Capitol Theatre was also the longest
running concert hall in rock'n'roll history.

Reading of the tributes to members, living and passed, of the list for
some reason called to my mind the "official" USA Kinks fanclub, "The
Kinkdom Kome" as referenced on the jacket of "Kinks Kontroversey",
Reprise 6197. Anyone on the list belong to this long lost club? If so,
what did you receive for being a member? I sent for information when I
bought the lp "back in the day" but never heard back. (I bought it not

As I said before somewhere else, the Come Dancing tour could be the
pilot for the West End Run in the Spring, to iron all the kinks out so
to speak, before it goes national, and hopefully to NYC? And speaking of
NYC, there also has been some talk of Ray's mini US tour at the end of
this year ( before rehearsals for Come Dancing Begin in late December )
that he might be doing multiple nights of a different album in its
entirety each night, sort of like what Steely Dan is doing. They are
also doing an Internet request night too, that might be another idea for
Ray to consider. If it happens you heard it here first..LOL!!!

Aren't you thinking of Paul (I believe) "from flyover country" who used

the one thing that bothers me about an "honor roll" of departed Kinks
fans - is somebody going to decide who's honorable and high-profile
enough to belong on there? Nothing against Herman or Hiroshi or anybody
else, but there are probably a lot of very fervent Kinks fans who nobody
has heard of because they don't play in a tribute band or can't fly out
of the country annually to attend concerts and meet lots of other fans.

I just want to say that when I was coming to London last November - a
foreigner with a camera crew - I could only think of only one guide:
Olga.

And she didn't disappoint.

At this point, our film includes on camera interviews with Paul
McCartney, Sting, Zooey Deschanel, Clive Davis, Paul Weller and on
and on. But some of our strongest footage remains our tour with Olga.
She's a masterful storyteller, understands how to have a conversation
on camera without turning it into a monologue and she even supplied
us with a fantastic shot from the '60s that we'll surely use in the cut.

Happy birthday, Olga, and thanks for that wonderful afternoon which
hopefully everyone will get to soon enjoy on screen.

Some bits of news/rumors from Ray's various media appearances:

* The Come Dancing musical will tour the UK in 2010, with the majority
of the original cast.
* At some point in the next 18 months, Ray will do a run of shows
where he'll perform an album in its entirety each night. Possibilities
include VGPS, Preservation, Soap Opera and Muswell Hillbillies.
* Maybe a few years off: a new work written about Appalachia and
Tennessee, to be recorded in Tennessee using local musicians.

Hi ALL KinKsters! 'As I have said before in a recent previous KinKs
Digest, I cannot separate/outline one spectacular number from Ray's
recent album with the Crouch End Festival Chorus as being that little
bit special. All of the songs are 'great! 'But having listened to all of
the numbers very many times, I have selected 'PICTURE BOOK' - which I
would imagine would make a great No.1 in the singles chart. I know it
has featured in the UK on a TV advert, but many people I have spoken to
(not all KinKs fans) think it has a special 'magic about it.

How about it Ray?

I'm sure it would make a n excellent top 10! Best wishes to you all!

Radio 2 someone had Plastic Man in their oldies on Steve Wright show Tuesday
had to chuckle when i think of the B B C banning the record because it included
the word BUM. I am certain the record was at number 31 at the time and of
course if the record was in the top 30 it would have been on the B B C playlist
just another hard luck story us Kinks fans are used to.

one of the 1960s pop group The Turtles was interviewed and he mentioned how

I guess isn't very original, but for three albums I'd pick Arthur, VGPS and
maybe Face to Face. If I stretched it to five, I'd add Muswell Hillbillies,
I guess, and Misfits for variety.

As for ten songs, I'm assuming that means ten songs that he doesn't usually
play, or else there'd probably be an overwhelming call for You Really Got Me
and Lola. So, in no particular order:

Young and Innocent Days (I imagine this working much like A Long Way from
Home did back in 2006)
Holiday
Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues (would still work without the horns, I
think)
Arthur (just the song in this case, of course)
Misfits (ditto)
This Time Tomorrow
Plastic Man
Shangri-La
Run Away from Time (or whatever the title is; I really liked this one as
done live)
Word of Mouth (good for his guitar player, but different from Low Budget)

In one of their regular e-mail send-outs (June 29), Tower Records describes
Wilco's latest release, "Wilco - The Album", as the "Top Release of the
Week". The review references the Kinks' song "Picture Book":

the disc is all strummy guitars, tinkling keyboards, big choruses, George
Harrison-style slide guitar, and stacked harmony vocals, conjuring aural

Hi there! Please don't think I'm taking 'the Mickey' here, but I
couldn't help but chuckle to myself, when you mentioned that after
booking tickets for Ray's 'Come Dancing' in 2010 you went to Kenwood,
where it absolutely poured with rain. After all it was "A RAINY DAY IN
JUNE" - one of my KinKs favourite songs. Can you see where my humour
comes in here? You will thoroughly enjoy 'Come Dancing'. My wife and I
went to see the show when it first came out - at The Stratford East
Theatre in London.It blew me away,and I think it will you too! No

Subject: The Late Great Lillian Roxon belongs in our Hall of Fame!

Thanks to my long time friend Mark Zimmerman from the Pa. area for
reminding me about the Late Great " Lillain Roxn " Besides being a
famous rock critic, she was a BIG KinKs fan but most of all close friend
of mine and Ray's too. For those who don't remember her or were not from
the NYC area Lillain was a well known music critic and wrote for NY
Daily News in the early 70's and had a column called " Top of the Pop ",
she and I would regularly attend kinks shows and as Johnny Rogan
proclaimed in his book on the kinks, d**n near turn every kinks show
into riots and carnivals with the paper plates, confetti, and the
sneaking in of beer so the minute Ray dished it out during Alcohol he
got it right back and soon their were fountains of it gushing
everywhere, she also attended many of the parties with Ray, Dave and the
band, and if I couldn't get in on my own she got me in, however on
occasion it was me who had to get her in. She gave the kinks a lot of
press and good write ups and also helped promote The KinKs Preservation
Society that I was running and got it a lot of publicity coast to coast
here in the US. She passed away in the late 70's but she will always be
missed and remembered in KinKdom.

Dear Neil and all Kohorts,

I'm doing a research about the Ragni/Rado/McDermot musical Hair!, and am
looking for versions around the world. I have already the USA, French,
German, Brazilian and Argentine versions, and the ones I want include
the Italian, Swede and Hungarian. Before someone asks what Hair! has to
do with the Kinks, I gladily klarify:

1) Hair! is mentioned in John Mendelssohn's liner notes for Arthur, and
he kompares Arthur favourably to Hair!

2) Black Boys from Hair! is a far more clever rewrite of ADAAOTN than,
say, Hello I Love You.

3) In turn, part of the melody of Where Did My Spring Go resembles Ain't
Got No (both great list-songs).

4) The RCA Victor company had a solid tradition in original cast albums,
and was the perfect choice for the first Hair! release - so it may have
been the ideal home for the Kinks in their Original Cast period (the
Preservation saga and Soap Opera, of kourse).

Other artists have used the "complete album in its entirety" gimmick. I've
seen Graham Parker do all of 'Squeezing Out Sparks,' for instance. I have
mixed feelings about the concept in the case of GP, since he already tends
to dig very deep into his catalog in his shows. But in the case of Ray ...
I think Ray digging deeper into the Kinks (and his solo) katalog is a grand
idea. I think he hasn't done enough of that in his shows over the past
couple of years, and the set list is getting a wee bit stale.

If Ray uses this koncept, how is he going to handle any Dave songs that
appear on the albums he chooses? Would Ray actually sing songs written by
Dave? Or would Ray just avoid the problem by only performing albums on
which Dave didn't write any songs (which would drastically reduce the
selection pool)? Or maybe he would actually give Karin something to do and
let her sing the Dave songs.

Would Ray only consider albums from the "klassic" period ('Village Green,'
'Arthur,' 'Muswell Hillbillies') or would he consider later albums like
'Sleepwalker' or 'Misfits'? Would he consider his own solo albums, or are
they just too obscure for the mid-level fans who might really like the idea
of hearing, say, 'Lola vs. Powerman' in its entirety but who maybe aren't
familiar with Ray's solo albums?

And would he announce ahead of time which album he was doing which night,
or would it be a surprise?

FranK asked for five nominees, so here are mine: Something Else by the
Kinks, Arthur, Lola vs. Powerman, Misfits, and Word of Mouth.

If Ray toured performing a different album each night vote would go for
Preservation, Arthur and Muswell Hillbillies.

However if my request were to be heard by Ray that would be for an album
of new songs (no choir please), and better still some new Kinks music (no
choir please)(The Kinks Choral collection is nice but not something I expect
be listening too much in the future, unlike OPLives and WMCafe).

Subject: Lost KPSers

Has anyone heard from Bill Gillman? He posted regularly for a while when the
digest in its infancy, then got into a running flame battle with some jerk
and as a result departed. He was from upstate New York and came to one of
Dave's shows at the Bull. He was having some health issues when we were last
in touch via email. I don't have his email address anymore.

Also, in the list of fans who have died, there was a very nice girl who used
to come to most of the Dave shows at the Sit n Bull. She would often come
with her husband and another couple (sister-in-law or brother-in-law). She
passed away in her sleep several years ago at a very young age. I'm blanking
on her name. Does anyone out there remember?

We have Greg Hopper and Jayne Morgan on board to work on the website. Yay!

It is still in it's rudimentary stages, so there's nothing much to report.
However, has anyone got any decent pix of the Muswell Hill road signs?
Strangely I don't seem to have one in my collection, but then maybe it's on
an actual photograph that hasn't been scanned in.

We are concentrating on Herman Gombert and Hiroshi Uchida first....this
doesn't mean to say they are more important than anyone else who will be
featured on this site, but we need to start somewhere. I hope that the Wall
will be in alphabetical order which is probably the fairest way to do it.

We will need stories, and photos - and definitely one good photo of the
person concerned to *head* their page. If you have any stories, or thoughts
on either of these gentlemen, please could you send them to me and I will
pass them on.

Yeh, that's the guy. One problem with getting on our 'list' is that if you

of class, do the choosing. They aren't busy.

And...I'm jealous that you Brits get to see Ray in a such a good setting,
with chorus, etc. It know, it's a character flaw. You get Ray and
national health care while we get foreclosed houses and water rationing (in
California). I tell ya what, I'll trade you the War in Afghanistan for
two tickets to see Ray sometime in the near future? How's that? I'll even
throw in Canada, straight across. How's that for a trade, eh?

Just recd my copy of the choral collection - I love it!!! If I was in
charge, I would RELEASE "Johnny Thunder" as the first single, best song

dreadful woman called Sarah Kennedy who is clinging on by the skin of her

Ditto Paul Boisvenue's recent post on Wilco.

I find it difficult to connect with some of the newer bands I blame my age
but Wilco is one of the finest groups I have ever heard. As a performing
unit they are extraordinary, and as a recording unit they are tremendous.
Much like Paul's post, I hear all kinds of influences, including The Kinks.
The Beatles influence is evident as well.(Founder and frontman Jeff Tweedy
is from Belleville, IL - 7-8 miles from my hometown. For those who are
unfamiliar with Wilco, Tweedy formed the group after Uncle Tupelo burned
out. Uncle Tupelo, formed in Belleville, were a St Louis-based act for
years.) Tweedy has referred to The Kinks many times, even calling "Muswell
Hillbillies" one of the cornerstones of alt-country.

But I digress Wilco is a great, great band, in every sense of the word.

Now, onto Nick Cave. I have just discovered Nick Cave. Any fans in the
kinkdom? How did I miss him?

Also, do we have any readers/posters from Italy? My brother sent me a
20-track "Best of" Paolo Conte collection that is stunning. (I've heard he
has changed his style throughout his career.) Since I do not speak Italian
I'm an American in Blimey know we struggle with English I don't know what
he's saying, but this collection is so great I know what he means.

As far as honoring Kinks fans who have passed on. I find that a very kind,
konsiderate koncept. Maybe this whole Web thing is gonna pan out.

Below is the response I received from the 2012 Olympic Organizing Committee

Got my copy of Kinks Choral Collection in the mail.

IMHO the arrangements of the songs are spoilt by the choir. Much prefer the
original versions with the other Kinks members and Rasa doing background
vocals duties.

If Ray was so intent on doing a choral album, he should have commissioned
himself to write a complete new works.

This is the first Kinks / Ray album that I have been this disappointed with
and I doubt if I will listen again to the Kinks Choral CD in the forseeable
future.

As regards Picturebook, it should have been released as a single back in
1968 when it could have been a massive hit.

When are we going to get a full concert DVD release?

around, I have reached one conclusion. I will sell my house to get to those
shows.

Vic, you have a fellow Nick Cave fan in me. I got into albums like "The
Good Son" and "Let Love In" as a teen and have loved all his work since. I
had the pleasure of seeing him play in Auckland a few years ago, and it was
actually too good.

Subject: the music business

hello digets,

While it is unseemly to wish ill or speak badly of the dead, there
were two moments this week that are of interest to anybody curious about
the music business. First, the sudden death of Michael Jackson draws
attention once again to his massive holdings in publishing. Not just the
Beatles catalog, but many other tunes all the way up to new works by
current artists such as John Mayer. Apparently, as recently as last
month, Jackson had exchanged words with Paul McCartney as to the nature
of his deal as a writer under that ages old contract and the
conversation included the possibilty of some copyrights returning to
Paul. Amazing, considering the bad blood and bitter words between them
over the years. All Jackson did was take Paul's advice and get into
publishing by out bidding Paul (and Yoko) when that catalog was put up
for sale 25 years ago. Weird timing, and as Jackson's will was 7 years
old, nothing will be settled anytime soon.

Ray Davies was the victim of a fate many other writers endured in the
60's. A gaggle of managers and publishers (and sub publishers) cut up
the pie of his songs (and some of Dave's) and the puzzle took years to
untangle. There are still pieces of the Kinks under control of ABKCO
even as the news of Allen Klein's death is made known. That guy was
involved with every major 60's British act in some way big or small it
seems. The Who Donovan, Herman's Hermit's, The Animals, etc...He was a
powerful enough man even at the end of his ife to have control over the
reissue of several mid 60's Kinks records on cd in the US. I am sure
nothing will change with his passing. The money required to break free
of old deals is still steep compared to the return.

Now, why i have posted this missive in what is usually a fan digest
sharing thoughts on the doings of the 4 most respected gentleman from
Muswell Hill? Well, because the music business was somewhat unkind to
our boys and many others and many musicians read this digest and need to
know the truth. The music business is not the music friendship, to quote
an old friend. I strongly advise anybody considering any kind of deal
involving songs, recordings, or whatever to read what you sign BEFORE
you sign. Talk to a lawyer BEFORE the pen is pulled out and above all,
study those that have come before you.

Subject: Now, onto Nick Cave. I have just discovered Nick Cave.

Nick Cave, yes and what of Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees. I guy
who continues to hold on to his own of heart and misfortune. A few
notches up we have the best of all new prolific writers and musical
artists, Will Oldham, ala Bonnie Prince Billie. He is today what Ray
was. Get a hold of the new Soulsavers single with both singing one
another's song. These guys are hidden jewels who keep on truckin as
the Davies brothers once did. Worth a listen.

My two cents for Nick Cave and Kink fans.
