There is a mention of the Kinks in today's Style Section of the NY
Times. In an article about Richard Avedon, there is mention of his
first session with the 17 year old Twiggy
...the Kinks blared from a phonograph nearby...Avedon made it a practice
to ask his models what music and food they preferred. I wonder if she
asked for Hot Potatoes?

Hi everybody,
I`ve got 2 questions:
- Who knows anything about Kim Goode who sings with Dave
"Is it any wonder" ? I think she`s got an interesting voice.
- What are the words somebody cries out at the end of the song
"Big Black Smoke"? Every time I listen he/she seems to shout
out something different.
I would feel much better if I knew. So, thanks in advance.

Ray said so in X-Ray, but I believe that was the first time he mentioned it.
That's certainly no guarantee that it's true, but it could be.

Subject: "Liverpool Sunset" and Gordon Edwards
Dear Tony, Bob, Neil and all Kohorts,
Tony Dawson-Hill wrote <<I have just finished reading a book by Martin
Edwards called Waterloo Sunset. It is about a fictional lawyer, Harry
Devlin and is set in Liverpool, England. Some of the lyrics to Waterloo
Sunset appear in the book. In the book's acknowledgments the author
says: "Paul Charter, a fellow crime writer and musicians agent persuaded
Ray Davies, the legendary composer of Waterloo Sunset, to grant
permission to reproduce a portion of the lyrics" Did I read
somewhere that Ray was originally going to call the song 'Liverpool
Sunset'?>>
You're right, Ray has said more than once that he was going to call the
song "Liverpool Sunset", but the appearance of "Penny Lane" changed his
mind - and he thought "I'm a Londoner, why all the tributes to
Liverpool?"
And Bob Gill wrote <<That's not a bad idea, but
I'm pretty sure Gordon Edwards is dead. Besides, he was only in the
group for a year.>>
As far as I could deteremine, Gordon Edwards is
alive and well - he even married singer Bridget St. John last year.
So I think the Kinks, along with Cream, are the only great 1960s group
to reach the 21st century with all his members alive.
Cheerio,
Ayrton

Hi folks, to Tom Dawson - yes "Waterloo Sunset" was originally going to
be "Liverpool Sunset" but Ray being from London thought that more
appropriate. Also I believe he may have had an issue with the Beatles
connection to Liverpool. And as an aside to nothing, am I the only person
who can't stomach Howard Stearn? Personal tastes are personal tastes I
suppose...to each his own...

Kinksters: Did the Grateful Dead ever play a Kinks tune in concert? Did
the Kinks -- you gotta be kidding? -- ever play a Dead tune?
Did Ray ever make a comment about the Dead, about whether he liked them or
not? Just wondering if there was ever any cross-pollination between the
two bands. I went to the Dead May 5 show in Chicago and they played two Bob
Dylan numbers. I also understand the Dead are now into a John Lennon jag --
they played "Imagine" that night, "Come Together" the next night and
"Revolution" on the concert a couple of nights before.Paul in Chicagooland

So, every once in a while, someone will post a list of their favorite
Kinks songs, and, Kinks fanatic though I am, I have never done so
because it's too difficult for me to narrow them down to a list.
However, I think I'm ready to try. In no particular order, then:
Strangers
Get Back In Line
Lola (Unfairly punished for being played on the radio a lot)
This Time Tomorrow
A Long Way From Home
Now, to continue with my three tied-for-second-favorite albums, Arthur,
VGPS, and Kontroversy.....

I think it's only natural that Kinks fans long for the return of their
favorite band - the Kinks. As much as we may love the work members of
the band have done individually, it is their work together that they
will be remembered for. The guys themselves recognize. When Avory,
Dalton, Gosling, Rodford, Gibbons and friends get together, it is the
Kinks music they play. Most of what Ray plays live is the songs he wrote
while a member of the Kinks. Even Dave's shows focused much more on the
songs he and Ray wrote for the Kinks than his solo material. So it's
only natural for us to desire to see these guys come together one more
time to play their songs.
