Here are some items from the past few days on the News & Rumors page at
www.kindakinks.net/news-rumors.php
There's a new book on music in London: In The City - A Celebration of
London Music by Paul Du Noyer, which mentions the Kinks. Here's a review.
www.simonfletcher.info/in-the-city-londons-embrace-of-the-world/
From the review:
<<A Londoner by birth rather than by arrival, Ray Davies of the Kinks
hangs over many aspects of this story, a common link to a wide and
disparate group of artists. Du Noyer is especially good on Davies.s
separation from the in-crowd and in his stories of unrecorded lives. .Even
in the so-called groovy sixties I was writing songs about my
neighbourhood. That.s possibly why I seemed detached from the other things
going on.. Davies describes Waterloo Sunset as the band.s statement, and
he is right. But in its beautiful description of the bustling city I find
it impossible to ignore the tinge of Davies.s detachment. The narrator
looks from his window and gazes on the city and the sunset . observing not
participating. The sheer sweep of the song and its cast of millions of
Londoners may overcome that detachment but not without melancholy.>>
There's a interview with Ray on the Q radio web site.

The final show of Ray's Xfm "residency" is now online to listen to (for
real)

There's a review of the de Lokerse Festival, including a paragraph on
Ray's performance. Also some photos on flikr.com here and here.
Here's a review of Ray's de Lokerse Feesten show (in Dutch), complete with
a set list.
Here's another review of Ray's Belgium show.
A couple more reviews of Ray's recent Belgium concert: digg.be and
DeMorgen.be (both in Dutch). There are also a couple audience videos on
YouTube here and here. Wolfgang has some photos on Flickr.

Subject: studio vs. live/ Ray in Amsterdam / Shiva / Willy De Ville
I must say that in common I like live better than studio. I think that's the
way the songs should sound. Not too polished and a bit or a lot different
everytime. Sometimes awfully bad performed, sometimes awfully good. Kelvin
Hall was great for the time . One for the Road is super, even Catch me etc..
But best of all: To the Bone 2. After having heard live versions I always
think the studio versions a bit tame and hardly play them anymore. The most
incredible difference I think, is between Lola 1970 and Lola 1980. I hardly
can imagine that once I liked the 1970 version..
I just " got my tickets from money that I saved in jail " for Ray's
performance in Amsterdam Oct. 13th. so I can enjoy a lot of live versions
soon! I'm extremely looking forward to it .
Thanks Ray for not letting down your faithful Dutch fans!
"Shiva "is absolutely marvellous; a bit of ADAAOTN mixed in a Dave song. I
think this song in particular shows how Dave and Ray went their own
different ways. I really can't imagine Dave being a " Kink " again.
When returning from my holidays I was amazed that there was'nt any mention
about Willy de Ville' s passing away. Could it be that I'm the only Kinks
adept omnthis list that like(d )
Willy - Mink - De Ville? His Spanish Stroll is an all time classic. Also
liked the Cajun influences a lot.

Subject: George Taylor Morris
Julie of The Sawtelles wrote about Kinks fan George Taylor Morris dying last
week of throat cancer. I always called him George Trailer Morris to his
face. I worked with him at Westwood One for about 5 years. He was a cool
guy. No probs. I once road bikes around the high-end part of Pasadena
with him, ostensibly so we could be friends but actually he was pumping me
for strategic info. on our radio network personnel, who to stay away from,
whom to get cozy with, etc. I don't hold it against him as I realize
that info. is power and I probably would've done the same if I traveled on
those levels. I was a producer and writer and he technically was my boss
but he never interacted with me as one. I did talk shows, pop music, black
music shows and comedy. I wanted to do rock and he knew that and tried to
give me a "Who" special but MR. BIG told him that I didn't know anything
about rock (look who was talking) and so he had to take it away as soon as
he gave it. The new gal got $5000 to write something that really wrote
itself. It's The Who, okay? How hard could that have been? I played
their songs on bass in my garage band every day for 15 years.
I miss him in a way although I haven't seen him in years and now will never
see him again. Sad as he went too soon. Stop smoking if you do.

Subject: XM40 Deep Tracks
XM40 Deep Tracks lost one of their DJs a week ago. I'm sorry to say
George Taylor Morris past away. Mr. DJ George was very loyal to The Kinks. I
think he started Deep Tracks, actually. But the others DJs are carrying on
his legacy of playing Kinks.
Over the last couple of weeks we heard, "Life Goes On" twice, "Permanent
Waves," "Where Have All The Good Times Gone?" "Animal Farm," "Starmaker,"
"Better Things," "Who'll Be The Next In Line?" "Low Budget," "Sleepwalker,"
"Ape Man," "Get Back In The Line," "To The Bone," "Stop Your Sobbin',"
"Victoria," "Till The End of The Day," "David Watts," "Gotta Be Free,"
"Tired of Waiting For You," "Set Me Free," "Back To Front," "Nothing To
Say," "Shangri-La," "Brainwashed," "No More Looking Back," "Muswell
Hillbilly," "Give The People What They Want," "Village Green Preservation
Society," "Working At The Factory," "Gallon of Gas," "Sunny Afternoon,"
"Australia," and "Do It Again," and last but not least, "Around The Dial"
for a tribute to their good pal, George Taylor Morris.
