I would say Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, Joy Division and New Order were the fore-fathers of the "EMO" era, more than power-pop, doncha' tink?

Smiley, fore-fathers of EMO sounds pretty accurate. I was posting some things from the early to late 80s which has been called 'post punk/college rock/alternative' that I thought had elements of power pop. I would probably add some EMO stuff later but I really haven't been a big follower of that. The fore-fathers of power pop, I posted earlier would be the Kinks, the Who, The Beatles and others. The 70s bands like Badfinger, Raspberries, and Big Star were considered the first pure power pop bands. The Sweet were actually the first band somewhat widely described in the press as a 'power pop' band; and we know they were a glam band too. It's my feeling that power pop bleeds over into various 'genres' over time and that's what I was kind of trying to highlight by posting things from different periods. There is a cool music festival in B'ham this weekend that I wish I could go to! One of the bands there is Weezer; which was described as a 'power pop' band and a 'pop punk' band in two separate articles.

Ok, back to the Power Pop - New Wave era cd mix I was posting. He's shown elements of 50s rock n roll revivalism in his music, but Dave Edmunds was also a New Waver and a pub rocker. Here's a little New Wave power pop gem; and I like it a touch better than Elvis Costello's version! 15. Girls Talk - Dave Edmunds

Here's a Graham Parker number I feel veered into power pop land.
16. Stupefaction - Graham Parker

Here's a fun band from Portland, Maine, that I just learned about -- The Leftovers. They have a punk edge to them too, but squarely power pop IMO...

I've been meaning to catch up with this thread for awhile now I have quite a bit of spare time today so I've just spent the past few hours reading and watching what I've missed, as well as tracking down some songs I'd like to add Great stuff guys! Tim - you've added some great songs that I hadn't heard before, I enjoyed catching up on some of the stuff that you've posted I really enjoyed the Will Owsley tune, it sounded a little like Oasis IMO, there were some rockin' guitar parts in that song! I agree with you about the Powderfinger song being uplifting - I enjoyed that one! The Merrymakers song is a great feel - good song too - I dig the whistling part! I just loved The Wannadies song - that one got my foot tapping! As did the catchy tune you posted by This Perfect Day I can understand why your music friends on other boards would like Bleu, Watching You Sleep has a really nice melody to it, but the lyrics are slightly worrying! The Long-view track was cool, its good to hear that its on one of those 'Penny Wonder' Cds that John and I have talked of! ;D John was right about me being drawn to the Magnapop song, that one really appealed to me! I liked it a lot! The Fleshtones songs you posted were really great Tim! I enjoyed Beautiful Light, and I have Take A Walk With... on a really cool comp I have Thats a great song!

John, I really enjoyed listening to some of the stuff that you've posted too! And I'm glad you liked those Letters To Cleo covers I posted, I like that band a lot and have several of their albums I'm suprised too that the Primitives song I posted got some dislikes on YouTube - Its a great song and they're a great band! I've yet to hear a song by them that I don't like! I enjoyed the Gin Blossoms song you posted, its just a shame that I had to sit through an ad for Lady Gaga's new album before I could watch it though!! That Plimsouls song you posted was really great! I'm glad you posted something else by them, its a shame that the Cd you mentioned by them is so expensive as I would have considered getting it, if it had been cheaper I really loved the Squeeze track you posted! I don't think I'd actually heard that one before I knew I'd like the Candyskins track before I listened to it, even though I hadn't heard it before! I'm still enjoying the Fun? album a great deal I could see the resemblence between the singer from the Candyskins voice and that of Tommy Keane, The video you posted by Tommy wasn't available to me but I made a point of searching for it on YouTube as I was curious. Of course I loved Into The Heart Of Love by The Mighty Lemon Drops - as you know I got the Laughter album and that songs definately a stand - out track IMO I can't believe you posted The Card Cheat by The Clash! Its one of my very favourite Clash songs, I often end up listening to that track twice when I have the London Calling album on! So It Goes by Nick Lowe was a great choice too! I got to know that song after hearing it on Rock 'N' Roll Highschool, the film starring the Ramones Its a cool song Also great choice with The Killing Moon by Echo And The Bunneymen - I love that one Since you posted Head on by The Jesus and Mary Chain (great song BTW ) I'll have to post an excellent cover of that song by the Pixies (I'll add that below in my next post, along with some other contributions )

Here's a great catchy number by Lit. I bought their album, A Place In The Sun, after hearing this - Lit - My Own Worst Enermy I thought I'd add something from Nirvana's Nevermind album (Even though I'm sure we've all heard it before!) Although their labelled as a grunge band, a lot of the songs on Nevermind have a real bubblegum pop sound to them, IMO. Kurt desribed Nirvana's sound as hard pop - rock and I think this song demonstrates that! - Nirvana - Lithium Here's another great song from Weezer, one of my favourites Weezer - Susanne Here's a classic 80's song by Jane Wiedlin - Jane Weildlin - Rush Hour I thought I'd add one om my favourite tracks from the Candyskins Fun? album Candyskins - House At The Top Of The Hill And I just love this Mighty Lemon Drops song from the Sound album - Mighty Lemon Drops - My Shadow Girl I saw The Buzzcocks live a few years ago and loved every minute of it! I remember them playing this favourite of mine that night - Buzzcocks - Love You More And heres another great punk/pop song - Eddie & The Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do I've been looking into two bands recently, Voice Of THe Beehive and The Darling Buds, both bands have a similar sound to The Primitives. I'll add a song by each Voice Of The Beehive - I Say Nothing The Darling Buds - Burst Here's a fun catchy song by Feeder - Feeder - Buck Rodgers And finally I'll add that Jesus and Mary Chain cover I mentioned The Pixies - Head On

Great selections sleepwalker! I'll be back later to watch them all! I just got through playing my dad a great Johnny Horton 2cd anthology which had several things he hadn't heard; it energized him for his walk today! I'll tell you that I've read the Pixies covered Head On but I've never heard it; so I look forward to that! Rush Hour by former Go Go Wiedlin is one of my fav songs of the 80s. I played the 45 record and a mix tape with it on it constantly in 1988 (I believe); in my room and blasting in the car! Good to see Voice of Beehive! I urge everyone to watch the Tourists video to see what Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox were up to before the Eurythmics! I'll be back later!
