The Fixx straddled the line between New Wave and the electronic/keyboard oriented pop of the era.
12. Secret Separation - The Fixx
Here's an underrated Clash number!
13. The Card Cheat - The Clash
This is the song that broke the Plimsouls to pop culture with it's inclusion in the flick Valley Girl.

Sorry to interrupt, here is a 90's band that got some indie popularity but never really broke out as stars. Guided By Voices is an excellent power pop band, and here is my favorite GBV tune:

Another 90's guy, Jude Cole should have been huge! He had some minor success with Start The Car and this amazing ballad, Tell The Truth:

They only have one album (that I know of), but Long-view's 2005 disc "Mercury" is power pop brilliance. And it's one of those penny-wonders my brother and Sleepwalker have mentioned. So many anthemic songs that speak directly to me. One of my favorites is Further, one of the anthems I spoke of. So powerful, so heartfelt.

Magnapop was one of my favorite female-led bands of the 90's. Here is a favorite from them:

The Fleshtones have been around a long time but mostly are known as garage band revivalists. They have had some excellent albums over the years. My favorite was 1994's "Beautiful Light." The title track was a standout ballad, and Take A Walk With... sounded like a lost Kinks track. I will post both:

Nice additions Tim! Wow, I realized I forgot to use 'Beautiful Light' by the Fleshtones on one of my Power Pop - Jangle Rock collections. A sloppy garage band made a beautiful jangly ballad! I always liked that Long-view tune a lot and that Jude Cole tune is a fine ballad among many excellent songs on the Start The Car album! That Magnapop tune is a slow builder with great payoff! Sleepwalker will probably be drawn to this one! 'Take A Walk' by the Fleshtones does have a similar sounding riff to early Kinks; like an amalgamation! Thanks for the Guided By Voices tune! I thought the song was going to be pretty long for them as they are known for the 30 plus track Greatest Hits cd; but there was over a minute of dead space! I need to listen to their stuff indepthly!

Here's a power pop tune by the Tourists, which contained Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox before they formed The Eurythmics!

The 77's are probably considered the fathers of alternative Christian rock; making music in the 80s that's was right there in quality with the likes of The Church, Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen etc; but who could also shift into 'heavy mode' !
Aaron 'A Train' Smith was the 77's drummer from 1984 to 1994! Smith was the drummer for The Temptations on such hits as 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' and also played on some Ray Charles records. Before the 77s, Smith drummed for new wavers Romeo Void.
An autographed pair of Smith's drumsticks can be found in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, right next to a pair of sticks used by Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.
This tune has a great Motown/60s girl group styled 'hey na na na' refrain!
Nowhere Else - The 77's
The reggae/rock/ska/rap band 311 lifted a line from this tune on their hit "I'll Be Here Awhile'.

Echo and the Bunnymen were at the forefront of the early 80s post punk movement that the much compared to Mighty Lemon Drops would carry on into the 90s!

After Ian Curtis of post punk pioneers Joy Division sadly took his own life, New Order was formed by the remaining members. Their first single was a song written weeks before Curtis death.

The Jesus and Mary Chain formed in the early 80s and were one of the founders of 'noise rock' or 'noise pop'. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is a direct descendent of early Mary Chain. By 1990 when this number came out, the Mary Chain's music fit in well with classic power pop. Tim introduced me to this Mary Chain tune when he started listening to Cutting Edge radio, and it still sounds as fresh today as when I first heard it!
