With their (major label) debut release, New Miserable Experience, The Gin Blossoms had one of the most commercially successful power pop albums ever (4X platinum) in the midst of the emergence of grunge in 1992. I think I heard almost every track from that album on the radio, in commercials etc. They would score a soundtrack hit and one hit off their next album, but this album was their highpoint. The lead singer would end up in an all star cast playing on a Tommy Keene record in the late 1990s.
Here's the tune that the Gin Blossoms burst onto the scene with.
Hey Jealousy - The Gin Blossoms

I'll change direction and post some things from my mix cd 'Classic Power Pop Vol. 3 - The New Wave Era'! I'll start with a fav early solo Nick Lowe tune! 1. So It Goes (Live 1978) - Nick Lowe This is one of the sunniest numbers by the Furs; a massive MTV hit never released as a single!? I love this version of the song as it is full length; the single edit is included on their Greatest Hits! 2. Heaven - The Psychedelic Furs This Dwight Twilley solo tune was famously covered by Tia Carrere in the movie Wayne's World! 3. Why You Wanna Break My Heart? (on American Bandstand) - Dwight Twilley

This is one of my fav Squeeze tunes from 1980! 4. Another Nail In the Heart - Squeeze This is the great US and UK breakthrough hit for Split Enz in 1980. Neil Finn would go on to form Crowded House, joined briefly by his brother Tim! Sleepwalker will just hate me for posting this! 5. I Got You - Split Enz

You're welcome Bro! I hope or think this exploration will be particularly interesting to Kinks fans; because personally, I don't think 'power pop' was possible until the Kinks put the power into pop ('You Really Got Me', 'Kinks' album, really all the early singles)! I think their role gets understated in this area! The wiki article is pretty well written, although The Jonas Brothers mention was utterly laughable and should be removed! But one of the stars of a Disney teen show, Drake Bell, put out a legit power pop disc! I should also add that punk associated bands with pop appeal such as The Jam, The Clash, The Ramones, and The Undertones were loosely associated with power pop. The Smithereens were considered by the press as a sort of early alternative band in the 80s, but in reality, were and are a fabulous power pop band! Good point John. The Kinks, Dave especially, did put the power into pop. When I was younger people referred to Dave as the Father of Heavy Metal.

Thanks for confirming why I think the Kinks are the most important band in relation to modern rock music; power pop, hard rock and metal; alternative; they were at the forefront of all that would come! It's great to have you involved in this thread uncleson!

Its a great thread, John. ADAAOTN, YRGM, TTEOTD, Destroyer, I Need You, The Hard Way, and all Daves magnificent lead guitar solos confirm what you say!

Now that I think of it the lead singer of Cheap Trick, in a way, tries to sing like Ray...
Think of the comparison between Tired Of Waiting and I Want You To Want me....?

Next is one of the catchier XTC numbers (to me)! 6. Mayor of Simpleton - XTC This is a dreamy Cars number that I hadn't heard much until I got the Cars Anthology several years ago! 7. It's All I Can Do - The Cars Here's a Motels number I hadn't heard until I picked up their All Four One album/cd reissue on the cheap (luckily) a few years ago. I always really dug Martha Davis' voice and loved most everything on their No Vacancy: Best Of I've had for 2 decades! Love the rhythm to this one! 8. Art Fails - The Motels

And i wonder if Angus Young of ACDC loved the cover of Schoolboys In Disgrace, or Rick Nielsen guitarist of Cheap Trick?

This was the biggest hit for Joe Jackson and it is still cool!
9. Steppin' Out - Joe Jackson
This Adam and the Ants number adds a little more rhythm to the mix!
10. Ant Music - Adam and The Ants
Here's an underrated Smithereens number that I felt fits well in this mix!
11. Beauty and Sadness - The Smithereens
