Sleepwalker, I think Ray does choose the winner. There are five prizes: Two voted by the public and three chosen by Ray, being the first prize (travelling to London) chosen by Ray. But this might also work as a first filter, maybe Ray will listen to the Top 50 or something like that.

Thanks for clearing that up Inaki, I think I misunderstood the kompetition... I knew Ray picked some runner ups to recieve the new BBC set and signed print, but I was under the impression that the public chose the overall winner. Why the votes then? I reckon you're right and that Ray will probably review the top 50, that's a bit of a shame as there are some great entries that aren't in the top 50...I checked out a cool version of Looney Balloon today.

I reckon the entire contest is to drum up publicity for the new releases. A public vote increases the chances of more people finding out about the releases. The fans who enter the contest essentially promote the new releases for the Kinks. Great marketing, cool contest.

I think you're right about it being a marketing tool, but if its been fun then no harm done I guess. I hope they keep the links up for a while yet because I haven't watched all the songs yet. This link might give a little more away about the marketing aspects of the "contest" www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/talenthouse-rolls-out-its-sponsored-engagement-engine-see-149796435.html

Bingo. And I'm happy to help spread the word & help market Kinks music. Everybody wins.

Agreed. it's kinda of a win-win-win. I'm having fun looking at various entries. In fact, I like the more amateur ones best. It's fun to see which songs people choose to cover. Why did you pick Phenomenal Cat, Jeff?

Well, I figured most people would cover songs that are much more well-known, so I suppose it was an attempt to stick out, in a way. Also, it's one of the more sparsely arranged Kinks songs from that era (by far my favourite Kinks era), so I thought there was plenty of room to re-imagine the song. That seemed to be what the theme of the contest was all about, rather than doing a re-creation of the original recording. Even if I don't win, I hope it made Ray chuckle.

Jeff, I'm sorry I didn't check out your cover whilst the Kompetition was still open - there were so many entries that I didn't even listen to a quarter of them - but I did check yours out this morning and I really liked it! I liked all the instrumentation you used, sounded great

Found this tweet from Talenthouse regarding the Kompetition, thank to Dave E's site -
'' Winner Announcement for @thekinks has been delayed. We don't have a new date at this time. Sorry for any inconvenience & Happy Friday!''
...I wonder how long we'll have to wait for a decision to be made...

Thanks for the kind words, sleepwalker.
Extra time, indeed. Talenthouse has this message on the site:
Hello Talenthouse Artists!
The Kinks are incredibly impressed by the quality of your submissions and have requested a little more time to finalize their decisions. Thank you for your amazing talent, your patience and understanding.
Sincerely, The Talenthouse Team

I'll bet they never imagined they'd have so many submissions!
At the moment there's also a YepRoc Records competition going on where people are doing covers from any Yep Roc artists -- my Nick Lowe message board is full of comments about various submissions. It's a cool moment, where DIY music videos meet the professional mainstream. I'm hoping something good comes of it!

The fact that the announcement is delayed gives the competition an air of authenticity - we shouldn't expect anything else when the Kinks are involved ;D And in true Kinks fashion, the winner should be the one that comes third

Dave Davies left a bizarre comment on my contest entry today. Basically, it said "Ray who?"
Truly bizarre.

Thanks for the kind words, sleepwalker. You're welcome Jeff I just checked out what Dave wrote on your entry, strange indeed. I saw that he also wrote 'the Kinks music is pretty good as well' - I guess he took it personally that you said 'Ray's music is and always has been a major inspiration for me' in your description - of course you didn't mean anything against the other Kinks though! I did mention earlier in this thread that I wondered if Dave has any input in this Komp, it seems doubtful as the winner gets to meet Ray and Mick and obviously Dave won't be there if Ray is Pretty cool that Dave probably checked out your entry but a tiny bit mean of him to use your entry to have a little dig at Ray Maybe he's hurt that he didn't get to sing at the Olympics...he said on his Facebook page that he wasn't invited I wonder if Dave has commented on any other entries? I notice that saome people covered songs that he wrote so maybe he looked at those?

I feel slightly honored to be caught in the crossfire between the two Davies brothers. Maybe Ray will pick me now just to slight Dave
