There are quite a few links to obituaries and tributes to Pete Quaife. I
am not including them here. Check them out on the News & Rumors page.
Here are some statements about Pete that Dave posted on the News & Rumors
page:
Bill Orton from the Official Kinks Fan Club writes, "On behalf of all the
members of the Official Kinks Fan Club, I would like to express our deep
sorrow with the loss of Peter Quaife. Our thoughts go out to all of his
many friends and family."
Here's a statement from Dave Clarke, of the Kast Off Kinks: "It was a real
privilege and pleasure to spend the weekend with Pete in Utrecht in 2004,
probably the last time he ever played with anyone from the Kinks. Despite
his illness he was funny, sharp and a great pleasure to be with. We have
exchanged a few emails since but I never thought it would be the last and
only time we spent together. "

Never the most fortunate with timing, the Kinks - White Album, Beggar's
banquet, VGPS all released pretty much at the same time, and then Tommy &
Arthur for starters - so on Sunday, on live TV, we have the England/Germany
World Cup last 16 game kicking off in South africa at 3 o'clock BST and Ray
kicking off at Glastonbury at 4 o'clock, just as the second half starts.
Because of that last minute USA goal against Algeria - ta very much. Twenty
first century man is deeply thankful for the tv recorder. I think there's a
fair chance Ray will be keeping the crowd up to date with the score.

As it happens the BBC didn't show all of Ray's Glastonbury set (shame) so
nothing was missed of the football, of which we shall say nothing more. The
choir were in good voice and there was a lovely 'Days' at the end, Ray's
eyes filling up. RIP Pete.

I had a nice tape of a Kinks show in Germany -- Hamburg, I think -- on Dec.
22, 1989 (my birthday, actually), but the tape has recently bit the dust. I
understand that this show exists on CD, and I wonder if somebody here might
be able to help me replace it, because I think it's one of the handful of
best latter-day Kinks shows I've heard, and I miss it.
-- Bob G.
P.S. It seems to me that Pete Quaife is still around. Every time I see his
name I see the same picture, which I think comes from the cover of Kinda
Kinks or Kinks-Size: He's wearing a jacket and a turtleneck shirt, looking
very mod and very much part of the British Invasion. Which he was.

Such a very sad news about Pete.
In 2004 he visited Utrecht in The Netherlands and played a few songs on the
Dutch Kinks Preservation Society meeting. And he read a page from the book
he was writing (has that ever been published?). I took some pictures and
spoke a little with him. I'll add the pictures to this message.
What a friendly man he was.
He will be truly missed by his family, his friends and the whole
Kinks-community.
Thank you Pete!

Subject: My memory of Peter Quaife
when Pete Quaife attended one of the Dave Davies shows at the Sit n Bull, I
introduced myself as a co-owner of the Bull and a huge Kinks fan. I told
Pete that whatever he wanted was on the house.
Of course, it was a busy night and I didn't have much time to chat with Pete
or to keep an eye on his table. At the end of the night, I went over to him
to ask him if everything was okay and to make sure he was comped. He told me
he'd already taken care of the bill.
I said, "Pete, I told you you were my guest. Where's the bill?" He pointed
to the pile of tabs sitting on the bar and said, "In there somewhere." And
then either Pete or someone who was at his table said, "Maybe you should
find it and take a look at it."
Thinking that maybe it was a huge amount, I went into the mountain of tabs
to find the one for his table, with the intent of refunding his money
(without insulting him). After about 10 minutes, I found his tab. It was a
relatively modest one -- two cheeseburger plates with fries -- and when I
turned it over to see what drinks he'd ordered (this was before we went to a
POS set-up, and our waiters and waitresses put drinks on the back of the
customer's tab), I saw that on the back, underneath his order of a Guiness,
he'd drawn a caricature of me. But I wasn't able to thank him (or have him
sign it) because by then, he'd left.
Of course, as usual, I'm kicking myself for never contacting him online to
say thanks. But -- in case he's reading this from somewhere -- Pete, I want
to you to know that that little caricature is one of my most prized
possessions. Thank you.

So sorry to hear Pete Quaife is no longer with us. God Bless him and
keep him. His legacy is that he was an integral part of the most
creative and innovative band of his generation. Not a bad legacy. The
song writing ie comparision between the kinks stones and beatles, I have
always felt skewed. I am not a beatles fan but of course a comparision
between them and the kinks is both correct and interesting to ponder and
investigate,The stones however, i feel fall far short of both in that
department. Both the Kinks and Beatles obviously had influences, the
Blues obviously being the main one. The Stones went beyond being
influenced, indeed there use of blues and gospel in there songwiting
verged on plagiarism, also lyrically, they were, to say the least,
limited compared to the kinks and beatles. My son loves the Kinks and i
was discussing with him recently "what was the first real Kinks song ?
for me it was ALL DAY AND ALL.............. a song i have always much
prefered to YOU REALLY.............im sure others disagree, but i guess
im not alone. Once again i am ideed sad to hear about the loss of pete,
the years have been many since as a ten year old kid from manchester i
first heard and fell in love with the band, its funny really, its as if
one of your mates has passed on even though you never met. My
condolences and prayers are with his family at this time, "Thank you for
the Days" John

really loved that he got up with us and played. The New York audience was
always amazing and we certainly gave them a treat that night...so glad he

choir were in good voice and there was a lovely 'Days' at the end, Ray's
eyes filling up.

Thank you.

Also, I meant to send this to the KPS, but must have sent it to the Robyn
Hitchcock list by accident. I think.

I already forgot who wrote this in the last digest, but I want to say

Just wanted to add a note about my first meeting with Pete. I asked him if
he had read both Ray and Dave's books and he said that Dave's was more
like he remembered those days...he was funny and also asked me why I
hadn't changed my strings after playing my bass at The Bottom Line! We
really loved that he got up with us and played. The New York audience was
always amazing and we certainly gave them a treat that night...so glad he
is being saluted here so warmly..
