this is the thread of the moment on the official Ray Davies forum about
the Come Dancing Musical
raydavies.3.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=5045&st=486
I know the disappointent and sadness everyone connected to the show must be
going through, not to mention the financial implications to everyone
involved, from Ray, the cast , theatre and production people, and even the
fans who have made travel plans in advance. No one is happy about this, but
it is was it is and the bottom line is we should all stand by Ray's decision
and support him. He has got this far in life and in his career and he has
always given us only the best so I'm sure this is going to be for the best
too. It actually could be a blessing in disguise. A touring version of the
show may have greatly underminded its chances of going to the West End or to
NYC on/off Broadway where a musical that is this good really ultimately
belongs. Ray has never failed to deliver the goods and has never
disappointed me or let me down before ( or do I think he ever could )and I
still think there will be Life in Come Dancing After breakfast, Yes there
is!

Neil/Group
I am a new member to the list although I have been a Kinks/Ray Davies fan
for many years. I have told many friends that the Kinks are the most
underrated band in history. Finally, I took my daughter to a Ray Davies at
the Tower Theatre, just outside of Philadelphia last Saturday and was so
impressed with the performance. Ray certainly connects with his audience and
both his acoustic set and band were great. New music was real good too and
of course, the old Kinks tunes were terrific sounding much better live than
on records/cds.
I have a large collection of live "bootleg" concerts from many different
singers and groups from all years. Some artists include Neil Young,
Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, John Prine, Rolling Stones just to
name some. Is it permissable to trade shows of Kinks/Ray Davies for
other artists on this list? I have one concert I think was named Queen
of the B*tches which is quite good. Is it worth buying the
remastered(ITunes) version of One For The Road which looks like it has a
real good setlist? I know alot of Kinks tunes but would like to be
educated to more. I did get a copy of The Village Preservation Society
which is different but good. I look forward to being exposed to more
Kinks material.

Can 5,000 poll respondents be right and wrong at the same time?
Including The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" in a poll to identify the top-20
classic guitar riffs of all time is obviously self-evident. However, placing
them at the number-14 position is somewhat indefensible.
"You Really Got Me" is a seminal rock recording. It inspired thousands of
other tracks and inaugurated a whole new style of rock guitar that persists
to this day. how many of the other songs listed can lay claim to this? "You
Really Got Me" should have been in the top-3!

Subject: Live vs Studio Recordings
Bud opined:
>>Sure, I have the albums Kelvin Hall, One For The Road, The
>>Road, To The Bone, Storyteller, Live at Bottom Line, and I enjoy them all,
>>but when I want to hear Waterloo Sunset or Sunny Afternoon or Celluloid
>>Heroes, 99% of the time I turn to the original studio recordings. After
>>all, it is these versions that have become part of my fiber; they havebeen
>>penetrating my DNA for 30, 40 years. Those are the versions that justsound
>>right to me. I like the various live versions, I like the choral
>>arrangements, I like the myriad of "tribute" CDs that contain other artists
>>covering the Kinks catalog, but what tugs at my heart and gives mecomfort,
>>is the old originals.
>>Maybe this is a sign of getting old, but the familiar draws me in. Ittakes
>>me back, it feels like an old friend. The original studio recordings aremy
>>old friends and I guess I'll always have an allegiance to them over all
>>other versions.
I understand and appreciate how the familiarity of particular versions of
songs and the associations of those song versions with events in our lives
makes the music meaningful to us later and helps in appreciating it. But
for me, I usually prefer to listen to live versions of songs these days,
whether on official releases or on bootlegs.
To me, live performances of songs generally have more life, more oomph, to
them. They throb, they pulse, they penetrate, they soar. It's one of the
reasons I love going to see live concerts. Studio versions, while "pure",
sound tame by comparison. Often the band improves on a song also -- often
by adding more instrumental breaks to it. (Actually, this is one of the
things I would criticize Ray for -- I wish his live performances added more
music instrumentation.) Listening to live recordings also let's me re-live
the experience of being at a show -- I remember what's going on onstage, the
communal feeling, the joy and excitement. I especially enjoy hearing the
brief audience sing-along portions of songs -- like on Sunny Afternoon or
Waterloo Sunset -- all the voices joining together sound beautiful to my
ears.
Live recordings also make the music more unpredictable. When I listen to an
album I know well, I also know the order of the songs well. I realize many
albums have song orders for a reason -- they are telling a story or
delivering a message, like Arthur, or Bruce's The River, or Moody Blues
records. But (and I realize this may be blasphemy), in general I have not
bought into the notion that the order of songs on studio records is really
all that important. Perhaps the artist had something in mind, but with
exceptions of the sort I mention above, that something does not get through
to me. So the mix of songs in live performances and recordings makes the
songs fresher.
The downside of live recordings is that some much of what is on albums is
not performed live, especially years after the album came out. The
performing artist has to create a mix of "hits" and other music to appeal to
the live audience, which are comprised in large part of casual fans or
concert-goers who want to hear the hits, and so after an initial tour in
support of an album, it is unlikely that many gems on an album will be
performed. So if you want to hear those songs live, you need to get
bootlegs from the days of the original tour, or put together a compilation
of live performances.
BTW, when do you folks listen to music? Unfortunately the usual time I
listen to music is working out in the gym or driving (and since I moved to
the city that's pretty rare). I almosyt never just sit in the apartment and
listen. Most of the time music is background to other activities or
conversation -- except when I'm at a concert. That's one of the rare times
I can truly focus on music -- and maybe one of the reasons I like listening
to live recordings.

Nov) DVD of CHORAL?
Hi Neil!Hope you are well. I am replying to Eric&Barbara's
>eb.scharer@kps.att.net< enquiry as to whether a DVD of 'Working Man's
>is in existence. A few weeks ago, I was browsing The Kinks site on
Ebay, when I came across an advert from(seller)GALAGUCK, that he/she had
'RAY DAVIES WORKING MAN'S DVD for sale.
The person left an Ebay number: (110456960065)-for this item. Without
much thought(other than to be amazed at seeing the letters, DVD)I
purchased it(Ithink, on a buy it now option)and paid as usual through
PayPal. I was really very surprised to see The Album for sale in this
format.
I ordered, and paid for it around the 22nd inst;and as it hadn't arrived
by yesterday, I got in touch with Ebay, who in turn got in touch with
the seller. The answer I received was, as the seller lives in South
America(I think it may have been Venezuela)I wouldn't receive it until
10 - 15 days after postage. It was seemingly posted on the 23rd inst, so
as this is only the 29th I have accepted this excuse, and I certainly do
hope that I will receive it quite soon.
I read your article in Neil's Digest number 3346 Eric&Barbara, and took
a note of what you said. I was in any case going to email you at the
time folks, but I got caught up - as usual. You can try The Kinks site
for yourselves folks, and see if there is still one on it for sale. I am
very sorry that I cannot give you much more information on this - until
I receive my copy(if I receive my copy!)Ebay have this person as a known
seller, so it really should be OK. Whether the quality of the production
is any good, is another question.
I will post in the Diary my results, as soon as it arrives.
Kindest wishes...........

Got to see Pirate Radio this afternoon with my 18 year old son, on a snow
cover ground in the land of Cleve. Since I attend very few theater movies in
this day, I would like to post some comments. Instead lots of paragraphs,
Iall list thoughts as they come.
Some observations (in no particular order)
1) most enjoyable movie I have seen at a theater in years.
2) it opens and closes with my favorite band in the world the KinKs!
3) takes place in 1966, when I was eleven, but the British Invasion already
had me by the testicals by then.
4) no Beatles songs.
5) music is the most important thing in my life.
6) A short scene in the movie has the sole American saying this was the best
time of life, to the 18 year old main character. A moving moment.
7) the different personalities that were portrayed and how the all excepted
each other as a family, I envy the camaraderie these people had.
8) A little smaltzy at the end, but a film I really enjoyed.
9) I think I was fortunate enough to be born during this time of music.
Rock n Roll!
and the tides of the season to you all.....

the city that's pretty rare). I almosyt never just sit in the apartment and
listen. Most of the time music is background to other activities or
conversation -- except when I'm at a concert. That's one of the rare times
I can truly focus on music -- and maybe one of the reasons I like listening
to live recordings.

Between Paris '65 and the early 70s German and BBC recordings, are

Subject: F.A.O.(NEIL)&ERIC/BARBARA SCHARER...Digest No.3346(Wed 25th

28 years old (i'm 53) could care less about the kinks...i made her watch
ray on letterman and she was really impressed!! in fact pretty well
shocked...she assumed that ray and the kinks were old news and only
appealing the us OLD people...well that has changed...that was the best
ray has sounded and looked in years...his band is awesome...bill shanley
is terrific and that drummer wow!! he actually did remind me of Keith
Moon(greatest drummer ever) the whole song was just updated and had me
out of my seat...i hope that translates to alot of sales...it
should.......Nick Nardozi(pgh pa)

Subject: Pirate Radio
