MY FIRST THREAD!
I guess this would concern musicians mainly, but perhaps not - after all, who wouldn't like to sing background vocals with their favourite musicians? Pick three at each instrument.
I'm sticking to Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards and Vocals.
Anyway, here are some people I'd love to jam with (alive or dead). I'm kind of a trashy type of player myself, so it would be reflected here.

Man, what a good thread idea. Only tough part is those among us and those not? If all bets are off, and going with the personal favorites, any genre:
Drums: Billy Cobham, Charlie Watts, Neil Peart
Bass: Ox Entwistle, Stanley Clarke, Paul McCartney
Keyboard: Steve Winwood, Herbie Hancock, Jan Hammer
Guitar: (Only Three!!! Sorry, Dave) Rory Gallagher, Danny Gatton, Joe Satriani
Vocals: Eddie Vedder, Aretha Franklin, Chris Isaak
Of course, my songwriters would be: Ray Davies, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young :-)
If we limit it to the ones walking this rock as we speak, there is room for Tony Levin on bass, and Al DiMeola and Johnny Winter on guitar. RIP Ox, Danny, and Rory.

RIP Ox, Danny, and Rory. See, I'd be too intimidated to play with some of those guys. That's why I didn't pick Hendrix or Chris Squire. I could handle maybe jammin with Peart, Entwistle, Gallagher and Vedder. But not Hancock, Satriani and Aretha. As far as songwriting goes - I'd write the songs. Those guys have written enough great songs in their day. I want their talent around to have fun with and perform my songs! ;D |

I hear you about the intimidation thing, G. I was making a dream list of best players, no way I can play with guys like Hancock or Satch. I have written a half dozen tunes over the years, that all suck, so I would need help in that department or we're going to be doing Kinks, Neil Young, and Stones covers-which wouldn't be too bad...

I hear ya. The 'blues' type guitar players - Clapton, Gallagher, maybe even Hendrix - I figure I could keep up with. Everybody knows the blues chords (or should). But if I'm jamming with Steve Howe, or John McLaughlin - who knows where the heck the songs gonna go! Jamming with Neil Young would be fun, because I can play most of his songs. I think I would play bass most of the time, unless I'm jammin with McCartney or whoever. And I'd be sure to tape it! So I'm dreamin my first jam: Drums: Keith Moon Guitar: Johnny Thunders Keyboards: Jon Lord Vocals: Alex Harvey Bass: Geddy Lee Me: "Background" guitar. Unless it really started to go well, then I'd turn my volume up. And I'm changing Chris Glenn in my original post and putting in Dennis Dunaway (of Alice Cooper fame). |

just off the top of my head because I could list a lot more than these few here but as a singer I would like to play with the Doors, Ramones Stooges or MC5, as a drummer I would like to play with Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Who, the Doors ( again) or the Faces but the original Alce Cooper band would be fine for both...they were a great live band!

The Doors are a band that a lot of people never really saw at the peak of their power. I saw them when they first came out and they were unbelievable, except for the singing. Ray Manzarek was at the time an incredible keyboardist and he really had a lot of empty spaces to fill, since at the gig I saw, Morrison walked out on the band twice in the middle of a song and stood there with his back to the audience about half the time. I also tend to attribute the success of Kiss to Alice Cooper who did the much same act better and sooner.

People forget what fine musicians were in some of these bands - Alice Cooper, The Doors and many others . And what about The Band? All talented on multi-instruments. Matter of fact, for the next while I think I'll change my jam mates to all the members of The Band only thing I'll have two keyboardists - well Manuel played piano and Garth the rest plus horns or whatever was needed. Right now I've got them on the stereo - "When I Paint My Masterpiece" - incredible. I was a late Doors fan. Never really started to listen to them until the late seventies. "The End" and "L.A. Woman" are my favourites from them. As for Alice Cooper - I just love 'em. Not really hot on the first two albums at all, but once Bob Ezrin hooked up with them they settled down some and produced four fine albums. I can't decide if I like "Killer", "Love It to Death" or "Billion Dollar Babies" the best. I saw Alice last year and he looked and sounded great. Actually, his voice sounded better than it did in the early seventies when the drink was hammering his vocal cords. His band were okay - you know, young guys who think that by playing notes fast means they're good. No white space, so to speak. Performed "Balled of Dwight Frye" which was a treat for me. I'd love to hear him do "Halo of Flies" (my favourite Cooper song). Anyone ever heard a live version of that anywhere? So I'm off now - Robbie is shouting, "where'd our tambourine player go?" |
