After scrolling through You Tube "Kinks" for the millionth time (that's why Lola has over a million hits) I would have to say that based on all of the noobie comments, I would have to say (and I would have said it anyways) that "Waterloo Sunset" is the most underrated song of all time!

I'm with I-man on this one. Waterloo Sunset is often cite as Ray's masterpiece...but people forget about Sitting In My Hotel, which is I believe its companion piece: the Waterloo Sunset guy as accidental tourist. Heartbreaking on so many levels.

I see Cooldaddy's point.. when you hear the KinKs on the radio, do you hear Waterloo Sunset? I certainly don't. It's LOLA or YRGM or Sunny Afternoon or....... It may be critically acclaimed but when you say, "The KinKs" are your favourite band to the common folk, Waterloo Sunset is not the first tune out of their mouths.
and "Sitting in my Hotel," i totally agree.
Where does this leave "Celluloid Heroes?"

The vast majority of the Kinks catalog is completely unknown to most rock fans. Folks know the early hits, Lola and the Arista singles and that's pretty much it. It's hard to pick one song that is underrated. A few years ago, I would have went with I'm Not Like Everybody Else. But it's no longer under-rated. All God's Children, No More Looking Back and This is Where I Belong would rank as candidates--although they are all very well known to us. This Time Tomorrow and Long Way from Home were never much celebrated till very recently.

I probably would have nominated "Strangers" as my most underrated song for 2 reasons:
#1 - It's by the Kinks #2 - It's a Dave song
But it finally gained the attention it deserved thanks to The Darjeeling Limited.
I would now nominate "Lost and Found" because it's from the Kinks 'late period' and it had a video that basically was never seen, but has become a fave of mine.
Here's the video:
Here's a live version (thank you KK from NJ):

I guess it was just disguarded by the critics, right off the top. SO how are we determining "under rated?" Who are the under raters? Are they us, Lite KinKs fans, the general public or the critics? We are the choir.

I recall a discussion on the digest a few months ago about "Lost and Found" -- I was surprised to hear that several Kinks fans consider it a throwaway song. I think it's brilliant.

I also love it and I always have, but I appreciate it even more since that discussion.

God's Children... Yes, beautiful, tender and written for Percy the film about a p e n i s transplant. I guess it was just disguarded by the critics, right off the top. Just a quick note on Percy. It is based on a novel penned by Raymond Hitchcock, who is the father of Robyn Hitchcock. ;D I've never read it, but by all accounts, the novel is just as terrible as the movie . You can see where Robyn picked up his skewed sense of reality.

I've always felt that Powerman and When You Were A Child were underrated.
