Let's get a idea of the breadth of musical tastes on this board...and maybe we can find some more great music to explore live Some of the most enjoyable concerts I've been to include: Asylum Street Spankers Brave Combo 3 Mustaphas 3 (RIP ) BeauSoliel Huun Huur Tu Birol Topaloglu Szaszcsavas Band (Transylvanian Rom group--not only do they play their instruments wonderfully, they dance as well) Taraf de Haidouks and last, but not least the Warsaw Village Band (who had me dancing in the aisle and feeling like a teenager again!)

Excellent thread idea, WicSuBel! I'd have to mention the Ecce Cor Meum concert I saw at Carnegie Hall (okay, it was special cool because Macca and Elvis were there) Les Paul at the Iridium Jazz Club Allen Toussaint at a jazz festival in Madrid (gracias senor Luis ) [ok Elvis was there too] Ben Allison at the Jazz Standard Nickel Creek alt bluegrass band Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Festival and that's not even mentioning my secret life as an opera aficionado...

All Classical stuff, a few that come to mind first:
1. The Melos Quartet, Madrid circa 1994 Claude Debussy - String quartets + Mendelssohn - The String "Octet"
2. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Claudio Abado, Chicago, 1983 - L V Beethoven - 6th Symphony,
3. Daniel Barenboin, Madrid 2001- F Liszt - The years of peregrinage
4. Alfred Brendel, Madrid 2002 - Haydn Piano sonatas
5. Bologna, Italy, The Town Square, on our honeymoon August 2002 - L V Beethoven - The Ninth Symphony. I can't remember the Director or the Orchestra, but I can remember the summer night breeze that cooled us as the sublime blasted through the air and transported us to a better world.
6. Jo Jo Ma, Madrid 2007 - J S Bach Suites for Cello
7. Trevor Pinnock & The English Concert, Madrid 2004 - J S Bach - The Christmas Oratory
8. Amsterdam Concertebau, Madrid 1994 - J s Bach - The Art of the Fugue
9. Vienna 1998 - In a little chapel at night, L V Beethoven - Misa Solemnis

Nice idea for a thread. By far the best non-rock concert I ever saw was in 1972 in a very small club called Funky Quarters in San Diego. Mahavishnu Orchestra had just released their first album, I didn't have it yet but was a John McLaughlin fan from his days with Miles Davis and his Devotion album with Band of Gypsys. I sat about fifteen feet from the band on the floor and they tore a hole in space. They were loud, tight, and metaphysically advanced on their instruments. McLaughlin was incredible on electric and acoustic guitar and Jan Hammer was a blur on keyboards, Billy Cobham did some of the best jazz drumming I ever saw anywhere. Another concert that came close was jazz fusion in 1976 with Jean-Luc Ponty's band in a small club at San Diego State college. He had a superb guitarist (Daryl Steurmer, who was Genesis' tour guitarist and Phil Collins' session guitarist for 15 years), and played bullet fast electric violin, like Paganini studies played though an amp. By about '80 he was mellowing out, but his bands at that time were similar to McLaughlin's. Smiley, I wished I could have seen a concert with the Guitar Trio (McLaughlin, DiMeola, DiLucia), I am a huge fan of all three and have most of their albums-and all of the ones they have done together.
