This new CD is out now from www.historyofrnb.net/whokinks.html. Doug Hinman very kindly wrote the foreword but this was inexplicably left out of the booklet. Apologies to Doug but here is the foreword that he wrote: This double disc set continues on from the first Kinks Beginnings CD Ramrods, Boll-Weevils & Ravens, tracing the history of original versions of songs covered by the Kinks early in their career. This second volume takes the concept a step further and focuses on recordings which influenced the creation of their initial hit record You Really Got Me. It takes a fascinating look at the rhythm & blues of the 1950s and early 60s and shows how each of the 26 songs can be viewed as an influence on the Kinks masterpiece. Assembled by the disc’s compiler Nick Duckett and accompanied by explanatory liner notes, it offers a unique and learned essay on how each of the tracks, whether knowingly or not, consciously or unconsciously, contributed to the ultimate composition and recording of You Really Got Me. This includes all aspects of the recording from the distinctive riff, the rhythm and the beat to its manic guitar solo. I advise you to listen to disc one with the liner notes handy. They are made to be read and listened to simultaneously. Disc 2 continues with original versions of songs recorded by The Kinks or famously played in concert. While many are well-known, a good number are fairly obscure and it’s wonderful to have them all in one place! Doug Hinman (author of You Really Got Me and All Day And All Of The Night)

Wow -- this sounds fascinating, Nick! That's really a deep dive into Kinks history. It took a long time to compile - about three years. Bit of a labour of love really!
