This is an Adam Schmitt rarity I found on 'Yellow Pills: The Best of American Power Pop Vol. 1' which also contained the Cowsills track 'Is It Any Wonder' that I posted earlier.

Here's a great catchy number by Lit. I bought their album, A Place In The Sun, after hearing this - Lit - My Own Worst Enermy I thought I'd add something from Nirvana's Nevermind album (Even though I'm sure we've all heard it before!) Although their labelled as a grunge band, a lot of the songs on Nevermind have a real bubblegum pop sound to them, IMO. Kurt desribed Nirvana's sound as hard pop - rock and I think this song demonstrates that! - Nirvana - Lithium Here's another great song from Weezer, one of my favourites Weezer - Susanne Here's a classic 80's song by Jane Wiedlin - Jane Weildlin - Rush Hour I thought I'd add one om my favourite tracks from the Candyskins Fun? album Candyskins - House At The Top Of The Hill And I just love this Mighty Lemon Drops song from the Sound album - Mighty Lemon Drops - My Shadow Girl I saw The Buzzcocks live a few years ago and loved every minute of it! I remember them playing this favourite of mine that night - Buzzcocks - Love You More And heres another great punk/pop song - Eddie & The Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do I've been looking into two bands recently, Voice Of THe Beehive and The Darling Buds, both bands have a similar sound to The Primitives. I'll add a song by each Voice Of The Beehive - I Say Nothing The Darling Buds - Burst Here's a fun catchy song by Feeder - Feeder - Buck Rodgers And finally I'll add that Jesus and Mary Chain cover I mentioned The Pixies - Head On Sleepwalker, I will begin to give my reviews of your selections! I have already mentioned Jane Wiedlin's 'Rush Hour'; I'm gonna dig out the 45 and play it today! 'Nuff said! Thanks again for introducing me the Weezer tune 'Susanne'. Lithium, a great choice of a Nirvana song! It's right there with 'Smells Like..' for my 2nd fav of theirs behind 'In Bloom'! I think of some of Nirvana too as power pop even though they were known for being a father of the grunge movement! Power pop can be found in unlikely subgenres! I praise you wholeheartedly for your selection of Lit's 'My Own Worst Enemy'. It's a song that might not make into an 'academic journal' study of power pop, but it absolutely is a modern rock classic in the genre! It's one I didn't make the connection on myself and didn't include it on my comps! It also was a massive debut hit that Lit the charts on fire here in the US! I have it down to include on any other power pop mix cd I make! Fantastic choice of Mighty Lemon Drops' tune! My Shadow Girl is now the song in my head today! It's quite different from the 'Sound' of the their 'Laughter' album which I've listened to a million times. Great selection and great band! More to come!

I know Uncleson really liked my forum CD choice of Beggars - Lovely Soul Detonator, and John thought I should post some other selections from that Beggars album. It was an overlooked gem of 90's power pop, produced by the now-deceased Michael Been of alternative legends The Call. This is my favorite song from that album:

I almost forgot how great this one is! It starts as a ballad but hits you with some wicked guitar playing in the middle! A little like Shangri-La perhaps? Notice that the Candyskins 'Fun' album was released in 1993; well over a year before Oasis debut came out! I think that Oasis 'borrowed' from The Candyskins just as they did the Beatles and Kinks, and the Stones Roses who hit the scene in the late 80s. Cool Buzzcocks tune! I think it's great that you got to see them live! Thanks for introducing me to Eddie and the Hot Rods! I've seen them mentioned in mag articles (on punk and power pop) and online but hadn't heard them! 'Do Anything You Wanna Do' is am excellent power pop tune from the heyday of the genre in the 70s! I like the Voice of the Beehive tune! They have a wall of sound approach! I have another of their tunes on a power pop compilation that I'll probably post! Thanks for introdicing me to the Darling Buds! It's a very good tune! I'll check out the one Tim posted by them too! I made a Femme Fatale 'power pop' cd mix that I plan to get around to posting as I think females get a short straw in recognition for making power pop music! Buck Rodgers by Feeder; now that's 'POWER' POP! It's like the 'cd player' got stuck in the chorus! I like the Pixies version of 'Head On'! It actually sounds more like the distorted early sound of The Jesus and Mary Chain, mixed with grunge! A different take; as Tim said; but a very good one!

It was an overlooked gem of 90's power pop, produced by the now-deceased Michael Been of alternative legends The Call. This is my favorite song from that album: I got nowhere to go, I got nothing to show, I'm just hanging around With my head on the ground FALLING DOWN! Yes, this is my favorite by the Beggars ! I think this is one of the greatest power pop songs of the 1990s! I love the particular distorted guitar riff and the airy vocals as if they are being filtered through the sound of an airplane lifting off in the background The music of the Bobby Fuller Four from the 60s gives me a similar feeling; and that's a high compliment!

Here's another favorite of mine from the Beggars self titled and only album! A fine mid 90s power pop outfit that came and went with hardly any notice; for some inexplicable reason!

Phil Seymour was the creative other half of the Dwight Twilley Band. Seymour set out on his own and scored this fairly big Top 40 hit in the early 80s!

As I spoke of the Bobby Fuller Four above, I should mention that their music definitely was another forefather of power pop from the mid 60s. One of their tunes made it into the repertoire of 2 stalwarts of 70s and 80s power pop; Marshall Crenshaw and Phil Seymour. Since Bobby Fuller's original is not up on the tube, I'll post Crenshaw's version and try to add the original later! All three versions are awesome and it's my favorite of many fav Bobby Fuller tunes! Let Her Dance - Marshall Crenshaw

I've just spent a really fun hour or so reading through the info you guys have posted and listening to some awesome songs! I shall start with Tim's selections and feedback first, since I listened to some of his songs first! Tim, I'm really glad that you enjoyed my selections, thanks for taking the time to check them out I'm glad I introduced you to the Eddie and the Hotrods song and that you liked it - I just love that song! I had a feeling that you'd enjy the Lit song and I'm glad you did! I recommend there album A Place In The Sun - I think you'd like it! As for the Darling Buds, I plan to get their Best Of Cd, hopefully soon! I'm glad you liked the song I posted and that your already familiar with them. Its cool that you have one of their albums, I bet its really good I think the Voice Of The Beehive song is really catchy too, and the Let It Bee album title made me smile! ;D I knew you'd be familiar with the Feeder song - I agree - its a rockin' song! I'm glad you enjoyed the Buzzcocks song (one of my faves) and I obviouisly knew you'd like the MLD's - My Shadow Girl - I just love that one! Onto some of your selections - I knew the Lit song you posted, Miserable, I love that song and haven't heard it in a good while It first came to my attention when I heard it on a comp as a teenager. I hadn't seen the video before though - definately one for the guys!! Can't say I'm a fan of Pamela but I guess the video was kinda funny! I really loved the Darling Buds song you posted - thanks for that! It's really catchy and definately my kind of music. It made me want to get their Best Of even more! They are very, very similar to The Primitives which can only be a good thing! The Capitals song, Tell Me Your Secrets, is a really nice track - very sweet with a great melody. Maybe you can post some more by them? I also really enjoyed both the Beggars songs, especially the one John posted (which sounded familiar for some reason ) Lovely Soul Detonator is an awsome song - its been in my head today I haven't quite watched all the video's you and John posted but I plan to watch a few more tommorow, this thread rocks!

Thanks to you too John, for taking the time to watch my video's I'm pleased that you liked them! I'm glad that you agree with me about some of Nirvana's stuff having a definate Power Pop element to it! I know that people think of them as a grunge band but so many of their songs (particularly those from Nevermind) have a definate pop sound to them (IMO anyway) I'm glad I was able to introduce you to the Eddie and the Hotrods song too! I was pleased to learn that you enjoyed Susanne by Weezer! Sadly my version of The Blue Album doesn't have that song I actually heard it on a film a few years ago (Mall Rats I think) and instantly loved it! Its a shame that you could'nt attend the festival that you mentioned and see Weezer that would have been a lot of fun, I imagine! I'm glad that you and Tim enjoyed The Pixies version of Head On. I think its a great cover, but to be honest the Pixies can do no wrong in my eyes! ;D I'd be intrested to hear that Voice of the Beehive song you mention, I'd like to hear more by them, I'm glad you enjoyed the song I posted Onto some of your selections - I was intrested to check out some of the Katrina and the Waves songs you'd posted. If I'm honest I only knew Walking On Sunshine and Love Shine A Light by them (I'm not suprised LSAL won the Eurovision Song Contest! ) I really enjoyed hearing Going Down To Liverpool! I didn't realise that the Bangles version wasn't the original The original sounds great! I also listened to Do You Want Crying and Red Wine And Whiskey - I was pleasantly suprised! I'll watch the other KATW video's tommorow I took your advice and watched the Tourists video! Wow! What a cool song, very catchy! Really great performance too I really dig the original version of Hanging On The Telephone by The Nerves I didn't even know that Blondie's version was a cover until you mentioned it Thanks for introducing me to the original! I'm glad yopu posted Singing In My Sleep by Semisonic. I now have their Feeling Strangly Fine album and that song is definately a stand out track for me I really enjoyed Starless Summer Night by Marshall Crenshaw Really cool feel-good song! I know he's well liked on the forum but I've not checked his music out before Perhaps I should have! I still have a few more videos to watch and hopefully I'll do that tommorow

Thanks for all of your great feedback sleepwalker! I'll try to reply more later! I'll just say that if you haven't already, make sure you check out the Plimsouls Zero Hour video! That's a vibrant number with heavy bass and guitar! Have a good time with the rest of your viewing/listening tomorrow! I've still got to review Tim's latest selections!
