Official News from KonK Central and the Ray Davies facebook pages;
" Just a note to dispell some of the misinformation I have read lately"
"Konk will be remaining open until it is sold, this could be three months or more. Ray is currently looking at new properties in the UK to work from (studio,songwriting co...urses and otherwise) which will involve the public and is not retiring....in fact far from it. He is finishing off the new album this week which will be out before the end of the year here. With a new album comes months of promotion which we will try and keep you updated on his sites for where and when all the TV and radio will be broadcast. We also will be launching a micro site around the album and have tracks streamed on the weeks coming up to the November release.
As previously reported he has two movies in the works, many deluxe editions due for 2011,2012, touring, as well as some new projects in the coming year. So Ray is busy busy busy.
I realize it is sad to see Konk shut its doors as there is so much history there and some great people will lose their jobs but I also think Ray needs a change. His new place will allow him to do so much more. His current staff were offered to go with him but as it is likely outside of London that wouldnt work and are fine to pass it onto the people he is talking to. I dont know of another artist that has worked from the same studio a third as much as Ray. The Beatles used Abbey Road for 8 years, Ray has used Konk for 37 years. A new studio/workplace will give Ray new inspirations and I think can only be for the better. It would be pointless for the council to try and rescue it, what would they do with it? the way it is set up inside does not lend itself to many uses. A new art centre is already being made in the old town hall just down the road in Crouch End (where Ray played some of his first gigs)
Large studios across the world are closing because the recording budgets just are not there anymore (see the following link) . business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/busi...icle6301542.ece its the way of the world.
David Gray owns the Church studios in Crouch End but it is not open for the public to book like Konk. He runs it as a private studio and has had to rent out spaces like to my neighbors who run a DIY business from it. We tried to do this with Konk but the costs were far to much to convert some of the rooms for private use. Sometimes it is better to move onwards and start anew."
