Man, I just can't can't get into Vampire Weekend! They sound so amateur(ist). You know, I am used to great music growing up. DJ Cousin Brucie etc.. Beatles , Stones, Lovin' Spoonful, Doors, Beach Boys, Supremes, Cream etc.. to me music needs to have great lyrics but just as importantly a great melody with a hook. I feel sorry for kids today, what a tragedy the music is so bad. I don't care lo fi under produced whatever it is not very good...... IMO...... Disclaimer ****( I have been drinking Merlot and am a little cranky) ;D

Disclaimer ****( I have been drinking Merlot and am a little cranky) ;D I'm surprised, cooldad. I grew up on exactly the same music you did...I wouldn't call their sound lo-fi at all; they have strings and a horn section, a pretty big production for such youngsters. I love how they blend that African pop beat with their classical music references. It's a fresh sound. I don't feel sorry for kids today at all. There's a lot of young bands these days who are passionate fans of the old 60s British beat and soul stuff, and work that into their music with great enthusiasm. of course, you won't hear them on the radio. Try this track: "It Can Happen to You" by the Baskervilles. (Their excellent new album, Twilight, isn't on iTunes yet.)

I recently went through another discussion on Vampire Weekend. It seems there's no middle ground with them.

Here is my pick for today. " Hurdy Gurdy Man", Donovan, Best of Live, with the George Harrison extra verse. An interesting and funny version. cool_dad98 Hey, I have that. He even impersonates George's voice on that. My pick is: "Dead Finks Don't Bark" from Here Come the Warm Jets by Brian Eno. Or you could also pick "Baby's on Fire" from that album.

'I'd Love to Be a Hippy' by the North Mississippi All Stars, on Hernando. Also, old cuts that I am re-discovering how good they were by U2, 'Like Song' and 'Surrender' on War, a great album I was listening to on the earphones last nite.

OK, I'm a little late with this one but I would like to recommend "Frankie's Gun" by the Felice Brothers as this months download. They are played a lot on WFUV in N.Y., but I have no idea if the rest of the world has a clue. Anyhow I am a bit disappointed because I thought we could all share our hidden gems on this thread, and even discuss them candidly then, me downloading all of theses great songs that we all wanted to share. Alas this hasn't been the case. Anyhow best wishes for a great Thanksgiving (Where are you goin' on Thanksgiving Day) If you live across the pond, go Arsenal!
