Ray's Come Dancing Blog on Utube Please post a comment on there..the Press is looking at this!!! ON THE STAND: A WEEKLY ROUNDUP OF THE BEST MAGAZINE READS ON THE RACKS JAMES ADAMS September 20, 2008 STOP SMILING No. 36 Ray Davies is 64 and, as co-founder of the now-defunct Kinks, wrote some of the greatest pop songs ever. Gore Vidal is 82 years old and for the past 50 of these has loomed large in the world of letters. The two don't have much immediately in common - Vidal's an American patrician, Davies a child of the British working class - but they're both grumpy old men. Really grumpy, plentiful evidence for which can be found in interviews each gave recently to Chicago's Stop Smiling. Davies knows the entertainment biz inside out and while he's never liked it, he dislikes it even more now. Take Simon Cowell (please). For Davies, Mr. American Idol/X Factor is pretty much the pop Anti-Christ. "All the Simon Cowells of this world do is create a sort of provincial cabaret for the terminally indiscriminate punter. . . . We dumb down and they get richer."
