Well, the man could play guitar like a fiend, and he put together a kick-a*s rock 'n' roll revue. He got his sax player Jackie Brenston to write what many call the first rock & roll record ever, and he took Anna May Bullock and turned her into Tina Turner. That's something to accomplish.
So maybe he was a drughead alkie who beat his wife. He was no angel, whoever's story you believe. Still, one of the great pioneers of rock & roll.

I saw Ike with Tina, Ikettes and all, in Madrid, in the late seventies, and it was one of the most exiting venues of my life. I remember guys jumping from the balconies in the second floor of the place to the ground floor in order to get close to the stage which was sizzling...
Saw Tina later on a couple of times (once in Park West Chicago when she was starting on her own in early 80's), and in a larger venue, and it there was no comparison.
I'm not saying Ike had all the merit, but together they made a great combination. Ike was a great musician (and a fiend yes, probably), not only Tina's pimp. Hope your not in hell man...
