How do you all feel about Radiohead releasing it's new album on a pay-what-you-want basis? Did any of you pre-order the album? I did and received my download activation code today and have downloaded the album. Varying from 0 pounds to several pounds, I would love to get a hold of the data and crunch the numbers to find out what the average price paid was, how many people paid zero, etc.

I think the whole industry is watching with great interest to see how this experiment works out. I'm hoping people were generous and shelled out a fair amount of money.
Radiohead is a good band for this experiment, because its fans are fairly loyal. I'd bet that a Rolling Stones release would net a different set of numbers.
There's a generational element as well: Young artists might not be able to take the risk because their fans are younger and have less disposable income (and, dare I say it, a more cavalier attitude toward ripping off artistic property).
It only makes sense that the record company would be willing to take greater risk if they can cut the costs of physically manufacturing CDs and dealing with distribution and all that. If the companies can cut those up-front costs, perhaps they'd be willing to take a chance on signing more new, untried artists. But probably not; they'd just return more cash to the shareholders and feel smug.
