These guys are new to me but sound interesting! (I loved Marianne Faithful's description of RAY: "Gothic, dark, quiet.") Okkervil River, The Stage Names David Peschek Friday September 21, 2007 The Guardian New Yorkers Okkervil River's fourth album is the first that really hits home, but it's so good, you want to go back to the others to make sure you haven't missed out. Will Sheff is a marvellous lyricist, like a gothic Ray Davies. A Girl in Port is a heart-rending portrait of a girl who's had "fun sitting backstage, someone's plus one", beautifully observed but never maudlin. Like the title track, it suggests the conceptual thread running through the price of near-fame; the shabby fall-out of almost-success. The band's easy muscularity and Sheff's way with a melody make The Stage Names an addictive listen. But beware, there's a real darkness lurking here.

"Beware" of a real darkness lurking there? Darkness is usually a selling point for me.
