So much talk about the Rolling Stones' 50th anniversary -- but next year will be the Kinks' 50th anniversary. That's the year in which (as the Boll-Weevils, then the Ravens) they signed with Robert Wace and Grenville Collins to manage them, then signed with Larry Page and Denmark Productions, and recorded their first demos. Ray's first published composition, "Revenge," was filed for copyright in December 1963, too. Some time around Christmas 1963 they decided to change their name to the Kinks, though their New Year's Eve gig in Hornsey was still billed as the Ravens, a date when Arthur Howes first saw them and offered to become their booking agent.
However, January 1964 was the year things finally came together, with the band signed to Pye Records and Mick Avory finally hired as the permanent drummer. They didn't really re-launch as the Kinks until February 1964.
Obviously I am impatient to get going on this 50th anniversary celebration! But should it be in 2013 or 2014? I'd love your input, folks!

Holly i'd like it to be 2014 as i believe that Mick Avory was an essential part of The Kinks and their sound and it was when The Kinks were the original four piece band!

I have to say that I agree with 16, Holly.
What do you have in mind in terms of the celebration?

I also think that 1964 is THE year.

What do you have in mind in terms of the celebration? I'd love your suggestions for what we should do. I plan to do a lot of blog posts about them, of course, but that would hardly be different from any other year. I suppose we could also add some graphics to our forum homepage. (Perhaps some of your artists could help with that when the time comes....) Of course, we could celebrate starting in January with a thread detailing all the events of the year leading up to the formation of the Final Four. Mick was hired on January 27th and February 1st was the first date when they officially appeared as the Kinks. At the very least we should organize an international celebration for February 1st, 2014! Any more ideas?

Again -- how is that different from any other year? ;D
I'm thinking we should publish an e-book about "what the Kinks mean to me." A joint effort, with contributions from all sorts of Kinks fans. But how many folks here own e-book readers?

Hmmm... I need to give this some thought Holly. Is it really bad that I don't even really know what an e-book reader is?... Just a small suggestion...might it be possible to have a picture of he original line up at the top of the forum home page, where the big red and blue Kinks logo is? I think that'd be nice We definately need to do something special in 2014.

I meant a device like a Kindle or a Nook that let's you read digital books. iPads and some other notebook computers also have that capability.
With an e-book, there are practically no publishing costs for doing a book -- you don't have to print or distribute hard copies of the book, you just upload the manuscript to a site and let people download it.
