I enjoyed reading that holly you broke it down brilliantly. I done a little digging & read your review of Sgt. Peppers really enjoyed it, like the part about A Day In The Life especially, John's voice sends shivers down my spine in that song.

Is they're stuff worth spending 15 quid on after Muswell Hillbillies? I know people call they're classic albums the first 9 they released. Would you recommend the albums that come after?

I most definately would recommend them Micheal! Obviously I like some Kinks albums better then others but there aren't any that aren't worth listening to in my opinion! The next album after Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody's In Showbiz, is a great album! (Half studio stuff, half live) Then the concept albums follow, it might take you a little while to fully appreciate those but once you get into them you realise how great they are! (thats what I thought anyway) Then back to more rock 'n' roll stuff after that - Of course I'd recommend the Sleepwalker album! ;D

Micheal, I will say that the Kinks enjoyed their best run of album chart and album sales success in the US beginning with Sleepwalker and running through Word of Mouth. Their fortunes in that area started to turn with the the last of rock opera era, Schoolboys in Disgrace, which charted about as high as Misfits did later! This is my second favorite period of the Kinks (Arista years); there were probably mixed reviews critically with Sleepwalker probably getting some of the best reviews! I became a fan in high school with State of Confusion, so I kind of think that one is a must! Their last studio album, Phobia, is one of my favorties but that's probably not a widespread view! I was more inclined to the arena rock of the Arista years because I grew up during that time and the early hair metal scene and the Kinks soared above the rest of that era's music in my view! State of Confusion was my antidote to the Motley Crue knucklehead in the neighborhood who went around blaring Shout at the Devil and the like! Labour of Love drowned him out! I'd echo Sleepwalker in that Everybody's In Showbiz is a must have! I'm not as big a fan of the rock opera years myself but I have several favorite songs from that era. Schoolboys is one of my fav Kinks' records but it's all opinion! Many others would say the rock opera years albums are the must haves! I'd at a minimum get a good comp of the rock opera years (Celluloid Heroes) and the Arista years (Come Dancing) but I recommend getting all of the Kinks albums up through To The Bone. Happy trails in your Pretty Things collecting but I wouldn't get anything by them before I had all of the Kinks stuff; but that's me. I'd recommend collecting the Creation and The Move in addition to the Pretty Things once you are done with The Kinks, of course !

Good advice John I enjoyed reading your views on the Kinks albums, I'm sure Micheal will find your post helpful I do like the rock opera stuff a lot (my favourite being Soap Opera) but it did take me a fair few listens to properlt get into the 2 Preservation Acts when I first got them - love them now though! I second your recommendation to get State Of Confusion - excellent album! And I'd rather blare out Labour Of Love over anything by Motley Crue! ;D

Thanks Sleepy ! Soap Opera is my 2nd fav of the rock opera era and has some of my fav songs. I guess I like those two more because they are more a collection of songs around a concept without the interludes etc. Soap Opera sold much better than the Preservation albums and Schoolboys upped it a bit and I think it was because it fit back more into the standard album rock format for radio and home listening. This is just my personal preference and a reflection of commercial interests; many hardcore Kinks fans like the Preservation albums as much or more than any Kinks albums! I think I'm just saying that they all need to be explored to find your personal favs; including the post Arista albums like Think Visual up To The Bone ! I'm still astonished that Muswell Hillbillies didn't sell better because it seemed to be widely acclaimed critically and loved by fans; and pre-dated and sort of laid the path for the Stones 'Exile on Main Street'. I like the tunes on Exile, but the lyrical depth doesn't compare to Muswell in my view!

Yes, the style of music varies rather a lot with the Kinks, depending on which period you listen to (60s stuff, concept albums etc) so its inevitable that different people will prefer different albums. I agree John, its a good idea to check therm all out before discovering your personal favourites! I thought Muswell Hillbillies was well recieved in the US, in fact I thought it was appreciated more by American fans then British fans, but perhaps I'm wrong? Personally I love that album!

I'll add a vote for Soap Opera and Everybody's in Show-Biz -- two superb albums with great lyrics and killer hooks. Soap Opera is a little campier, but still loads of fun, and because it's about "ordinary" life, it's full of songs that spring to my mind daily (lyrics like "nine to five, nine to five, working from nine to five" and "have another drink it'll make you feel better" inevitably pop up!). Same with Show-Biz, with all its songs about driving and eating etc. It's one of the best highway driving albums ever, IMO.
