Well, they could do hippy-dippy if they wanted to. See My Friends is awfully trippy, isn't it? So is Fancy. And Phenomenal Cat is waaaay out there.
But he's way off base if he thinks that Waterloo Sunset is a flower-child anthem.
Most of VGPS -- which ought to be completely hippie-ish -- is in fact a crisp album of English satires. Sitting By the Riverside, for example, is a great slacker anthem, but it sounds like a piece of vintage Parisian boulevard pop. The Kinks never did anything straight genre.

Its great that your enjoying discovering Kinks music that you haven't heard before Michael! Yes, I believe your right about Kinda Kinks being rushed. I think they were rushed into the studio due to the commercial success they had with YRGM and ADAAOTN, and their record company probably wanted to churn out another album whilst they were so popular. I remember reading how some of the 'mistakes' in the album made Ray cringe I agree with you though - it is a great album and I'm sure you'll love it even more after giving it a few listens!

Seconded, Michael! "Kinda Kinks" is an outstanding album with great songs and, as you point it out, with f!#@ing awesome songs like "I Need You" and "Well Respected Man". ;D "Kinda Kinks" was not the only album where a band was rushed into a recording studio in order to record new songs just to cash in on the present hits. I remember having read that in 1964 -1966 bands had literally to queue in order to record their songs - signs of the times I guess! God Save The Kinks! PS: The best Kinks reissues are yet to come!

Thanks for your replys and kind words Something i have noticed in listening to them is how innovative they are with their music, lyrics production etc etc they really stand up to the beatles, as great a band as the rolling stones are i dont think they were a band that tried to push music the way the beatles did thats taking nothing away from the stones. I think people are wrong when they say its the beatles versus the rolling stones its the beatles versus the kinks cause in my opinion its those two that pushed in studio production. When i played my kinks albums in my sisters car she said if you didnt know any better you'd think thats the beatles. I think thats mainly due to how the beatles get more air time you even get beatles documentaries on the tv. Also ( sorry to drag this on ) dont yous think the kinks are vastl underrated? even on the rolling stone magazine top 100 albums not a single kinks album in the top ten, the f!@k is that all about? blondies got an album in the top ten but no kinks!

I am totally with you on this, micheal. To my mind the Stones were a great live band, but their creativity never held a candle to the Kinks and the Beatles. And when you add in what great performers the Kinks could be -- well, "underrated" doesn't begin to express it.

Thought i'd give a little info on the next set of remasters, picked up face to fzce today yet again brilliant what a song writing talent ray is of course you guys know this, so.... the album linear notes are a interesting read the booklet is as extensive as the other deluxe editions. Songs are crystal clear sound so fresh SUPERB. To those of you new to The Kinks, few songs from the album i recommend. Party Line Dandy Session Man Holiday in waikiki Youre Looking fine and of course Sunny Afternoon The whole album is great including the extras. To round it off a 4th consecutive 5 star kinks album and i dont think i'll be scoring the rest through to 1975 any lower. Btw wasnt 1966 the best year for the british bands Rubber Soul Aftermath Face to Face Animalisms A Quick one fantastic albums , hope your right about lola holly
