Thanks for posting this Holly! I saw this was live on Letterman; any idea what year!? Her voice was still very very strong. Her and the Blossoms were the 'true voices' behind a couple of Crystals songs; one being 'He's A Rebel'. I might dig out the Best of Darlene Love cd I have! John, I believe Darlene sang this song on Letterman every Christmas for several years -- it was his holiday tradition. I don't think he managed to do it last year, but I keep an eye out every year. Years ago, when I was reviewing records for my college newspaper, the record company sent me the Phil Spector Christmas album -- many girl group Christmas classics. I love them all! That is the sound of pop Christmas for me -- although many years later I also acquired a compilation titled Hot Rod Holiday with lots of lovely things by the Beach Boys, Fats Domino, Dion, and Chuck Berry -- another seasonal classic! Run Run Rudolph - Chuck Berry Amazingly, the otherwise outstanding Chuck Berry 2Cd Anthology does not include this; but then, I have the Chess Box!

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
This is one the most played Christmas tunes in the USA such that Lee has become synonomous with it (along with maybe her 'I'm Sorry'). I was recently listening to a career anthology of her's and was particularly struck at how excellent at rockabilly she was (albeit not a lot of it) and how mature her voice was for someone who hit it big at age 13! I'm even more appreciative now of how and why Little Miss Dynamite is the only female (only 3 total) to ever be inducted into both the Country Music and Rock And Roll Hall of Fames !

I love this tune, although as a Brenda Lee fan I wish her music was better known in general. My favorite is "Break It To Me Gently." Marshall Crenshaw has a fun song titled "I'm Sorry (And So Is Brenda Lee)."

Marshall Crenshaw has a fun song titled "I'm Sorry (And So Is Brenda Lee)." Yes Holly, I'm also quite fond of that Marshall Crenshaw tune! I really think Bigelow 6-200 is awesome and it is amazing that someone so young could make such a rockabilly classic! Brenda is also in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, which puts her beside John R. Cash and Elvis Presley as the only artists to pull the triumvirate of (Country, Rock N Roll, Rockabilly Halls of Fame). The only thing she really wasn't was a songwriter of note. I've always known she was underrated in the public consciousness; I explored her work a little more and gained a wider appreciation. I always really liked the Juice Newton smash hit of 'Break It to Me Gently' in the 80s and I think she followed Lee's version a good bit (a la Edmund's 'Queen of Hearts); sadly, I had to discover Lee's version after the fact of Newton's version.

The song is from the motion picture "Four Christmases". The tune also appeared on the Tom Petty box-set "Playback" which was released in 1995.

You know what I love about this cover -- repeated from the original -- they get the way the tambourine sounds like snowfall. It's just such a SPARKLY track!! ;D
