mumford and sons with ray is the strongest pairing on the cd with a nice medley of 2 of my favorite kinks songs

My point was just that even a mediocre CD like this can sound a lot better a year after it came out, when the pressure's off. I hated the Springsteen track a year ago and kind of like it now. It amuses me that he goes to such lengths to make us hear that tricky line correctly for once: it's not "And the very best of choruses too. / Follow all the doubt and sadness..." but "And the very best of choruses TO follow all the doubt and sadness..." And whatever you think of her performance, Lucinda Williams deserves some credit for choosing a great but neglected song, "Long Way from Home."

Very good point about the pressure to like or not like a new CD. When I write reviews of CDs, I hate having to rush to get it published to coincide with a release date. Often it takes weeks or even months for a CD to fully "reveal itself." I need to listen once carefully, then two or three more times when it's just in the background, so the tunes can groove themselves in my memory. When I finally come back and listen intently again, my feelings about the songs may have changed radically. I find this is even more true with complex and subtle music, like most of the Kinks' catalog.
