Great review, G12. It's exciting that Ray threw in a new song. Gives us hope for new CD! Thanks for sharing.

It's going to be a much (INSERT APPROPRIATE WORD: longer, harder, sadder, tougher, lonlier) week than I anticipated! So very HAPPY ;D though, that RAY seems to be doing so well & enjoying himself!

Thank you, Rose.

www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=133965&command=displayContent&sourceNode=133948&contentPK=17264116&moduleName=InternalSearch&formname=sidebarsearchREVIEW: RAY DAVIES, ROYAL CONCERT HALL RAY Davies is 63 this year but, even in a concert stuffed with all-time rock classics, one of last night's encore highlights was a new song he was playing for the first time.
With a new album due soon, Davies is clearly not planning to rest on his laurels. Hearing the world premiere of Imaginary Man - a strange mixture of the anthemic and despairing which is fit to stand with his best work from three or four decades ago - was a privilege.
That said, things were a bit shaky early on. Davies at first seemed distracted, nipping off stage to change his jumper during the drawn-out intro to The Tourist and later moaning about his own light show. And he still can't resist chivvying the crowd to sing along every few minutes. Even so, Celluloid Heroes was eerily moving even as 20th Century Man was a worrying reminder how reactionary his "nostalgia" can be. Ending the first half with a promise to be back in ten minutes, he didn't re-appear for nearly half an hour.
The second half was a different story. Highlights? Too many to count. The delicate Village Green (dedicated to his friend Ned Sherrin) was an acoustic delight. Come Dancing brought the crowd to its feet. Another new one, No One Listening, was a heartfelt rant against bureaucracy inspired by the unsympathetic reaction of the local DA after Davies's shooting in New Orleans. At the other end of the emotional spectrum, A Long Way From Home was a touching tribute to his brother Dave.
All this and Sunny Afternoon, Dead End Street, Tired Of Waiting, All Day And All Of The Night, Lola, Days, You Really Got Me and the transcendentally lovely Waterloo Sunset, too.
It was the stuff of legend.

Great, thanks for posting! That makes two new songs now -- maybe he'll pull out a new one every couple of shows!!
Did you have a great time, Seanie? Was the experience of actually seeing Ray in the flesh a complete thrill for you?
