Yesterday, I sent out new reminders about the list move to the 680 or so
people who hadn't yet moved along with the new address of the list.
About 10% of those have been able to sign back so far in the past day.
We now have almost 1070 people currently receiving the digest from the new
address. Welcome back to all of those who missed the first messages due
to filters or other reasons.

Archway Tavern/Retcar Street Kinks: The Kinks probably wrote more songs
about London than all other bands combined. Shame about the two North
London photos on the Muswell Hillbillies cover, though: The inside of
the Archway Tavern, pictured on the front, has been renovated beyond
recognition; even worse, nearby Retcar Street, pictured on the inside
("Cats on Holiday"), has been demolished. It's not even on the map
anymore.

Subject: total listen
Last year around this time I did something I'd never attempted before: I
listened to all of the Kinks albums, in order. It took a couple of weeks,
but it was quite enjoyable, and occasionally made me hear things in a new
light. Anyway, doing that reminded me of the poor status of Kontroversy in
the remasters. I don't even have that Castle remaster any more, because the
sound was so lousy that I couldn't listen to it. (I'm generally not the type
who complains about stuff like that, either, but in this case I had to
notice.) Even if it had been done decently, it still suffered because all
the other albums through Something Else had an excellent selection of extra
songs and Kontroversy had basically nothing. As I recall, all it added was
Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Sitting on My Sofa, and an outtake of
Dedicated Follower. Oh, and I think one of those demos Ray made for When I
See That Girl of Mine or something else.
Anyway, it was a poor job, and I thought I'd make my own version of
Kontroversy, the way it should've been. I just got it out yesterday for the
first time in a few months, and was so pleased with it that I thought I'd
post the track list here, just as a conversation piece:
See My Friends
Wait Till the Summer Comes Along
Such a Shame
Well Respected Man
Don't You Fret
Milk Cow Blues
Ring the Bells
Gotta Get the First Plane Home
When I See That Girl of Mine
I Am Free
Till the End of the Day
The World Keeps Going Round
I'm on an Island
Where Have All the Good Times Gone
It's Too Late
What's in Store for Me
You Can't Win
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
Sitting on My Sofa
The first five songs, of course, came from the Kinda Kinks remaster, but I
think they fit much better thematically and sonically with Kontroversy. I
omitted the flip side of See My Friends for two reasons: one, it sounds more
like the earlier stuff, and two, I was using a 100-minute tape, and I wasn't
sure that everything would fit on one side if I included that one. (As it
turned out, it would've fit, but I like the arrangement better without it
anyway.)
Anyway, this creates a version of Kontroversy that can hold its head up next
to the remastered Face to Face. The songs aren't quite as good, I suppose,
but it sounds like the Kinks' first real album, and now I can hear it the
way I've always wanted it.

Subject: The Davies Brothers
I just got a couple albums from the modern day Yardbirds - Birdland
(2003) and Live At B.B. King's Blues Club (2007). Both are
surprisingly good - but not really the Yardbirds, since the band now
has just 2 original members, drummer Jim McCarty, and rhythm guitar
player Chris Dreja. The songs are a mix of old and new. In the same
vein, I don't really consider the Who to be "The Who" without Moon
and Entwhistle. If Paul McCartney and Ringo play together, as they
just recently did, that's still not The Beatles. And ever since Mick
left the Kinks they weren't really the true Kinks to me either.
Which brings me to this point - maybe everyone should forget about a
Kinks reunion. The Kinks were the Kinks for about 30 years and as we
all know, they were great. But now they're history. But...maybe we
can pin new hopes on Ray and Dave getting back together to make some
new music. Touring may or may not be in the cards, but a new studio
album would be welcome with open arms by all. Sooner rather than
later for everyone's sakes, theirs and fans alike.
The Davies Brothers. Would make me happy.
