I can't say it was "mine," because it belonged to my brother -- but we had the 1966 US compilation album The Kinks' Greatest Hits, which is a rather ironic title because the band would have so many other great hits to come. I hadn't yet begun buying records for myself, but I certainly played the grooves off of that one! What was yours?

Found Face to Face in the budget section (1966). Loved the cover, and Party Line hooked me.

„Autumn Almanac“, „Waterloo Sunset“ and Dave’s „Death Of A Clown“ - plus the Beatles‘ „Hello Goodbye“, The Bee Gees‘ „World“ and The Monkees‘ „I’m A Believer“. I bought them all together in 1967 after my parents had given me the very first record player.

I wanted to start with a new discography of a new group without knowing almost nothing of The Kinks, I decided and bought in the shop "Something Else By The Kinks" and my friend bought the "Face To Face" ... yet they knew nothing even You Really Got me ... I only knew "Victoria" to hear on the radio once. And from there all began to fall, one after another, then there were many albumnes-print so I could not get many years later, especially the (RCA and Arista) .This was 27 years ago.

Thanks Martin53!! I was so obsessed with complete discography but had not been on the market. And they all left republished in 1999 ... And these were missing me by complete. Preservations, Misfits, Soap Opera, Sleepwalker, Low Budget and all following.

I think that's different today, right? You must have an impressive record collection by now.

I feel proud to have collected all of The Kinks many as the rest of the classical groups without having to go look online .... I love having my private personal material without resorting to internet. So are great music lovers ...

The first Kinks record I have listened to was The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. It hooked me instantly with it's peculiar sound and catchy melodies. Being French I didn't understand all of the lyrics, so I decided to read them. I soon realized that they were really good too! But since I couldn't find a physical copy of the record in my town I purchased Something Else instead. Not a bad decision .

It's not always easy to find the album you want in a shop these days. Years ago, a similar thing happened to me after I first heard Preservation Act I. (Not perhaps the easiest album to begin a lifelong Kinks fanship...). But the only record I could find in the shops was Muswell Hillbillies. That was very different from Preservation but it was lucky for me -- and it's still my favorite Kinks LP!

True HollyH !, Preservation Act are not the most suitable albumns for a newcomer to listen to The Kinks, are more feasible any of the sixties and even the first of Arista. Besides the Preservation is a dish that requires a slow and relaxed digestion, so that finally can warn their authentic taste and discover the reasons why, in fact, it is a masterpiece and a different work to what is done in other groups by then, so it was the less conventional work of all his discography and why not mistakenly liked many uncultured critics.
I started with "Something Else By The Kinks"

I have not had the chance to hear Muswell Hillbillies yet but I have already heard 20th Century Man which I liked a lot. I think it will be the next Kinks album I'll listen to. Something Else did not become my favourite Kinks LP but it did strengthen my interest in the band for sure!
