(I posted the same thing at the Ray Davies forum if this sounds familiar. Just trying to spread the word of this unknown but awesome stuff to fans of a great band!)
Hey all you hardcore kinky dudes and dudettes! Nice to meet you!
Recently, I got a hold of some Kinks recordings I had no idea existed and are apparently part of a mostly forgotten part of Kinks history.
Back in early 1973, Ray was planning on writing a straight sequel to the Village Green Preservation Society rather than the brilliant rock opera we got instead. The project seemed very intriguing, consisting of re-worked songs from Village Green in a Muswell Hillbillies style with brass, a few songs that'd end up on Preservation and unreleased outtakes. Unfortunately, there are only crude recordings from a show at Drury Lane in 1973 that remain from this project. Here's a couple that unfortunately are as crappy sounding as they are interesting:
The Overture
I'm Going Home
It's a little hard to tell but "I'm Going Home" went on to become a real Kinky Klassic! (Sorry bout the spelling, I don't know if that's required here) Who can name it?
So does anyone know more about this project? Everything I know is from Doug Hinman's kickass book which I highly recommend. I hope somebody saved the studio recordings from this era as we could have a whole new Kinks album to listen to someday if the Big Sky wills it. I don't have my hopes up but you never know!

As you may know from the Doug Hinman book, I believe that the Drury Lane show in January 1973 was booked as part of the celebration of Britain's entry into the Common Market (now better known as the EC). I've never heard these tracks before, although I know the titles from the Drury Lane setlist. Thanks so much for posting them here!
I reckon if Ray hadn't included them in that show, these outtakes would have gone into that great box of obscure tapes of unreleased songs under Ray's bed. I'm not surprised that Ray would have recycled the song if possible. But from this version, I can't recognize what other song he may have turned it into. Anybody else have a guess?
And by the way -- welcome to the Kinks board, Kirk!

Thanks for the info and the welcome Holly and np! "I'm Going Home" is definitely hard on the ears but if you listen carefully you may hear a certain brass riff from a certain song done a few years later. I won't spoil it yet if anyone else wants to give it a shot.
My friend only sent me a sampling but he's going to burn me the rest of the concert soon hopefully. Most notable are different versions of Picture Book and People Take Pictures of Each Other redone with brass arrangements and a song I've never heard before called "Time Song". I'll let you guys know when I get them!
In the meantime, do you know if I should ask Andrew Sandoval or anyone in Ray's camp if they know anything about studio recordings of these songs? I wonder if a Preservation Deluxe edition is in the making. A lot of people seem to write that one off because it doesn't have their precious Lola on it. (*sob*)

Did it turn into You Can't Stop The Music?
Or Juke Box Music?

I would say that it eventually became you can't stop the music, I don't hear juke box music. Its a shame that as far as it is known, that the show wasn't recorded or filmed

Its a shame that as far as it is known, that the show wasn't recorded or filmed Uncleson and Donl nailed it! It's Can't Stop the Music. The only lyric I can make out is recognize is "I've been half a million places" but it's definitely the same verse melody. Here is the other completely unreleased song from the concert courtesy of the legendary Kinks fan, Frank Lima. It's in much better quality than the version I have. I'm gonna post up the rest of the concert on the weekend when I have the TIME (the character in this song doesn't seem to have it either!) Anyway, anyone got any ideas how the original Preservation album was supposed to look? These are the song titles from Doug Hinman that Ray recorded in early 1973. He scrapped most of them and rerecorded Preservation entirely. This sounds like a fantastic album honestly! The Overture Morning Song (Early Version) I'm Going Home One of The Survivors (Original Single version) Cricket (Early version) Where Are They Now (Early version) For You Using Me Time Song Picture Book (1973 redone version) People Take Pictures of Each Other (1973 redone version) The Village Green Preservation Society (1973 redone version) Scrapheap City (Original version; Ray on vocals) Salvation Road (Early version)

Hey guys, if anyone wants I could send them the rest of the concert if you pm me. I've been really busy to upload the whole thing on Youtube, plus I still want to preserve it's rarity for trading so people can trade it for more rare Kinks recordings.
The one thing I learned is that the recording I have is not from the show that Holly mentioned, Drury Lane on January 14, 1973 but actually another show from Drury Lane in December 1972 which was sort of practice before the big stage presentation. The youtube video that Mr. Lima posted of Time Song is actually from a soundcheck from the real presentation on Jan 14, sadly the qualities only marginally better.
I wish I could find out more about these shows and the original 1973 Preservation album in general. It's almost as mysterious as the songs Ray wrote for a stage show with heavy feminist views called Chorus Girls in 1982.

Chorus Girls is like the Holy Grail of Kinks/Ray trivia! I'd give up my German Misfits poster from 1978 to hear/see that! Not exactly an equivalent exchange but mmm maybe someone will do it XD I had no idea Chorus Girls existed until a few days ago while paging through the Hinman book. Even tastier is that the Kinks went to the studio to record all the songs themselves! That makes two great lost kinks albums! C'mon Ray be merciful to your adoring fans and get yourself some money for a yacht!

Isn't little bit of abuse from chorus girls? I remember reading an interview with ray after gtpwtw was released and I think he said it was for(from?) Chorus girls, but I may be mistaken

Chorus girls, but I may be mistaken According to Doug Hinman, Ray wrote A Little Bit of Abuse after the women performers in the cast of Chorus Girls challenged him to write a song about women's issues. So there is a connection, but the song isn't from that show.
