I haven't yet been seduced by your Day One and Two picks, but I was very happy to see Days Three and Four. The new John Hiatt just recently kicked in with me in a big way; I need to hear it every day. Great analysis of "Wood Chipper" (but how does the narrator know what's on that shopping list -- is he now omniscient?). You mention the EC - JH comparison; I like this record because JH is less aggressively clever than he sometimes is. The songs are simple and perfect.
But the big surprise is your discovery of the dBs. I discovered them during my few years living in Hoboken. They were long gone, but I kept finding their band and solo stuff in the used CD stores. May I suggest that the best place to continue exploring is Holsapple and Stamey's two albums as a duo. And mark Feb. 5 on your calendar: new CDs from Stamey, Sexsmith, and James/Yames!

IThe new John Hiatt just recently kicked in with me in a big way; I need to hear it every day. Great analysis of "Wood Chipper" (but how does the narrator know what's on that shopping list -- is he now omniscient?). My guess is it's the same thing as William Holden narrating Sunset Boulevard while he's floating face downward in Norma Desmond's pool. (The original screenplay called for an opening scene in the morgue, where the coroner pulls out a drawer and Holden sits up and starts narrating the picture...) That shopping list is really the crowning touch, isn't it? "Tidy Bowl . . . Little Debbie Snack Cakes . . . " It's funny and heartbreaking at the same time. As the ancients would say, lacrimae rerum -- "the tears of things". So glad you agree with me about this album. I'm always happy when Hiatt hits the mark.
