I'd like to see The Shore -- I hope it gets some wider distribution, thanks to its Oscar win. On Saturday night I finally saw Hugo -- what a dazzling film! It certainly deserved all the technical awards. No big surprises on Oscar night, but it was fun to watch. I was glad to see The Artist pick up so many of the top awards -- such a charming film, it deserved them. I was glad they brought the dog out at the end too.

The day before the Oscars, I was in Topeka at the annual Kansas Silent Film Festival. I watched silent movies from 10 in the morning till late that night -- heaven! Sprinkled throughout the program were several of the Melies shorts that are glimpsed in "Hugo."
The next day, after "The Artist" won Best Picture, a friend of mine posted, "I just KNEW that talking pictures were only a passing fancy!"

I was so enchanted by those Melies clips in Hugo. I love how Scorcese let out his inner film-history geek in that movie.

At the festival, one of the musicians accompanied "A Trip to the Moon" on an accordion -- somehow, it felt just right! And "The Kingdom of the Fairies," which was also in "Hugo," was done with a live narrator, just as Melies intended.
I should watch the "Lost and Found" video again to tie this all back to the Kinks.
