I think Donovan writes beautiful songs, also Neil Finn from Crowded House (and Split Enz)

David Mead -- inexplicably obscure, though Ron Sexsmith chose him as his opening act a few tours back and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger has produced two of his CDs. Thought I'd take this opportunity to spread the word.

I agree with you sleepwalker24 Neil finn is a fantastic songwriter. Yes, his lyrics are beautiful! I'm glad Kinkcan knew that CH song in the Rate This Song thread - he likes CH a lot too! I'll also add Frank Black from the Pixies too. His lyrics are often quite obscure, a bit strange and a little dark but I do love them! I remember how excited I was to hear his duet with Ray on the See My Friends album.

Really, Martin? Listening to Kate Bush is like fingernails on a blackboard for me. I know a lot of fans I respect think she's great, but I'm afraid I don't see it.
I agree with you about Richard Thompson, Don. I'll have to check out David Mead, Gary -- I value Ron Sexsmith's endorsement!
I'd like to add Elvis Costello to the list, one of my all-time favorites. I'm also a huge fan of Ben Fold's songwriting -- witty lyrics and melodic tunes, and he really digs deep emotionally.
And someone who deserves to be better known -- Greg Trooper. His songs are very intelligent and soulful, some heart-breaking, some funny. I highly recommend checking his stuff out.
