Hi!!
I've been a casual fan for years. I have a 2 disc best of but want to dig a bit deeper. I really enjoyed BBC4's recent Kinks Night.
I see that the original albums are being reissued this year so I guess it's the perfect time to start buying!
Can anyone recommend where to start?
Thanks

Hello Soulbrother40 and welcome to the board You probably have the same 2 disc set as me (The Ultimate Collection) Its a good comp in that it offers quite an important set of songs from the 60s, but barely touches on any of the great music that the Kinks put out afer that! This is just my opinion but perhaps a good place to start would be with The Kinks debut album, simply titled The Kinks. I also think the Picture Book boxset would be a great place for you to start if you want a pretty comprehensive overview of the Kinks whole career. It contains 6 discs and features songs from every decade of their career, from the 60s right up to the 90s. Here is a link if you feel like checking thgis set out - www.amazon.co.uk/Picture-Book-6CD-Kinks/dp/B001GJ5WHU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312133240&sr=8-1Its quite pricey but well worth the investment if you can afford it. Good luck in starting your Kinks kollection and we hope you'll decide to stick around

I got Something Else Deluxe Edition.
I've listened twice now........ David Watts, Death Of A Clown, Situation Vacant, Love Me Till The Sun Shines and Waterloo Sunset are great. Will need to give the others another go.
Not keen on the "Deluxe Edition" sticker. Did this not used to be a plastic cover?

"Something Else" is a good choice, I started with "Village green preservation society" wich was good too ! I didn't buy the Deluxes yet but I got the '98 reissues wich are great !

The trouble with buying Kinks compilations is that eventually you end up loving them so much you buy all the albums anyway! ;D
Something Else is a great place to start. I'd also recommend Face To Face -- IMO that's the album where the Kinks really become the Kinks, when Ray stopped listening to their handlers and just doing what he wanted to. Of course it's hard not to love Arthur and Lola V Powerman, but maybe you should wait until those reissues come out, which is supposed to be soon.
My favorite Kinks album is Muswell Hillbillies, but it's not really a typical Kinks sound-- it's a little more "country" than most Kinks records. I happen to love Everybody's in Show-Biz too -- and it gives you the bonus of a second disc that's a live performance, capturing the raucous spirit of those old Kinks shows.
Welcome to the board!

Gonna check out those BBC sessions now!

I'm getting into this album........ The only songs I'm not too keen on are No Return & Lazy Old Sun. Gonna check out those BBC sessions now! I'm suprised to hear that! I love both those songs, especially Lazy Old Sun but I guess we all have our personal favourites I do hope you like Afternoon Tea, thats one of my favourites from Something Else! I agree with Holly's recommendation to get Face To Face, I think that album is generally regarded as the first Kinks album where Ray's songwriting talents really started to flourish and he starting to develop his own style of wriiting. The Village Geen Preservation Society is definately a must have! Not just my favourite Kinks album, bust the best album in the entire history of music in my opinion! Anyway, its great to have you here and I hope you'll really enjoy discovering more new Kinks songs!

I saw a 3 cd VGPS in HMV the other day. Is that one of the new remasters? No, I got this set 7 or 8 years ago - not sure exactly when it came out though I think John has this set too, perhaps he knows when it came out? One disc is the VGPS album in mono, one disc is the album in stereo and the other disc is rareties (some of which appear on The Great Losts Kinks Album) Its definately worth getting!
