RAY DAVIES / Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 at the AVO Session Hall Basel, SwitzerlandRay Davies took the stage together with Bill Shanley and started off the set with unplugged Kinks versions ”This Is Where I Belong”, “I Need You” and “Dedicated Follower Of Fashion.” Ray was tense and VERY nervous at the beginning – after all it was the first time since 1995 that he had played Switzerland. Furthermore the whole show was being recorded for Swiss TV. This meant that in the first half of the show he concentrated himself more on the big screens on the left and on the right hand side of the sold-out venue (Do I look good? Am I cute and spectacular enough?). So this was a bit embarrassing as the high quality of the show suffered a bit as he was paying more attention to the screens and not concentrating himself enough on the songs and on the audience. But ice finally broke when Ray and Bill began with “Dead End Street” - the first half of the song still unplugged, the second half with the band. The song unfolded an immense and hitherto not known power! Ray and the band kept on playing purely Kinks stuff with the exception of the excellent “After The Fall” from his first solo album “Other People’s Lives”. They payed deserved hommage to “Celluloid Heroes”, "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", “20th Century Man”, “See My Friends”, “All Day And All Of The Night” and “Nothin’ Can’t Stop Me Worryin’ About That Girl”. They did NOT play „Days“, „Waterloo Sunset“ and „You Really Got Me“! Than the lifetime achievement award was handed over to Ray Davies which he accepted thankfully and with big emotion. The set closed after 2 hours with a fantastic and dramatic version of “Lola”. Ray, while playing the last 20 minutes of the set or so, kept on shaking his head telling himself and the band repeatedly that he had never expected such a huge response from the audience in his life - that this was sheer unbelievable and that he was at a loss of speech! An excellent time was had by all. Oh, by the way, did I tell you that last night’s concert in Basel definitely heralded the end of the age of paper plates? How come? While Ray was doing “20th Century Man” an unknown (?) lady from the back row threw her grey (!!!) bra XXL on to the stage close to Ray – so close that it landed very near by his right foot. Ray took immediately notice, bursted out laughing loudly and was giggling his way through “20th Century Man”. Goodbye paper plates! Hello bras XXL! ;D Martin, this concert must have made quite an impression as you posted a review of it twice; a year apart. Sleepwalker alerted me to this review and it appears you are 'alfred' on the Ray forum. raydavies.3.forumer.com/index.php?s=92ef269e2a3078b1fa88a4389e4306eb&showtopic=6430It sounded like a great show; I'm envious of you!

Hmm, I think some posters have described some great shows they've attended recently. Perhaps someone might have a review they'd like to share? It would be great to hear about a great show!

A Bonus Indeed, I couldn't think of a better mate to attend with -- we both LOVE Graham. I was quite embarrassed too, as YOU knew ALL the words to the songs, as to where I knew only a fraction. You know how I am about those things! A great night of music and friendship. Graham and Bob were quite silly on stage and very comfortable with the homey type of atmosphere this club emits. I'm sure Holly's blog will reach to depths I can not share with you as I am NOT a wordsmith. It's a shame I didn't bring my good camera, as I could have gotten some really nice shots from the close proximity we had. I may have da-rank a little too much of my favourite Italian liqueur to hold it steady. PS. Had I known the ladies were now throwing bras on stage....

OK, I tried this nicely before with no acknowledgement! Martin, you posted a review here that had been posted a year prior by 'Alfred' on the Ray Davies forum! You posted this review here as your own! Are you Alfred on the Ray forum or did you lift that review from Alfred and post it here as your own review?
