„Dirty Rotten Scoundrels“, a fascinating comedy film from 1988 starring one of my all-time favourite actors - Michael Caine! Steve Martin and Glenne are great too.
We really had a lot of fun watching it.

As it's the last few days before the Oscars, I'm madly trying to squeeze in all the big contenders that I hadn't already seen.
Today: American Hustle.
Smart, strong, absorbing film. Top artistic marks? Maybe not, but it was a fine lark.

I guess '12 Years A Slave' ought to get it on prestige, but 'American Hustle' is my guilty pleasure. All the nominees were enjoyable, although I found 'Her' to be vastly overrated. Interesting but slow, plodding. 'Nebraska' was a treat too. The envelope, please...

Dallas Buyers Club had juice. Nebraska had heart. Wolf of Wall Street had snark. American Hustle had cojones. I loved them all.
You couldn't pay me to go see 12 Years A Slave. Okay, you could pay me, but it would have to be a lot.

'On The Beach' (1959) A deeply sad story - perhaps the saddest of all, considering the subject matter - but a brilliantly made film. Not much more to say other than catch it if you can. Just be prepared for the gravitas of it. Four Junior Mints.

You shame me with your classic film obeisance to the greats. "On the Beach" cannot be topped.
But in the spirit of trying to keep the conversation going...
I have only seen 2 movies this summer and they were both loveable.
Jon Favreau's "Chef" is delicious food porn on the surface, but on a deeper level is a very moving film about following your dream. I enjoyed it from start to finish and walked away with a very warm feeling.
Also just saw "Trip to Italy" with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Again, food porn (something I am very invested in) but a thoroughly delightful subtle film about middle age and adjusting one's expectations. (Who'd have thought?) Loads of heart and also luscious visuals. 3 Junior Mints in my book.

And tonight I saw "Calvary," a very heavyweight Irish film about Catholicism and sin and forgiveness. It's also in a weird way a compelling sort of whodunit. Naturally I ate that up. Brendan Gleeson is effin brilliant in this film.

Yea, I was so moved by 'On The Beach' I had to make a comment. Crazy that I hadn't seen it up till now. Anyway, required viewing for humans. I've had my eye on 'Chef' so I think give it a whirl. Saw 'Calvary' - great acting, sad story. What is it with tragic endings these days? Guess 'happy' is passé. Speaking of that, had a look at 'The Fault In Our Stars' - expected maudlin, emotionally manipulative predictability. Was only 50% so. Fine acting and some neat story twists pull it out. That is all. Oh - except stay away from 'Godzilla'

Oh - except stay away from 'Godzilla' 'The Fault In Our Stars' I think that movie is based on a novel by a fellow from Birmingham, AL. I remember that his first novel was about his time living at a boarding school called Indian Springs in Birmingham. It got a lot of press here and won some major awards nationally. It's good to know the movie was halfway redeemable!

'Frank' (2014) A quirky tale, loosely inspired by Chris Sievey's Frank Sidebottom character, very funny at times, but with it's tragic moments too. Worth a look if you're interested in something different. Three and a half Junior Mints

'Don Juan ou si Don Juan était une femme' (1973) A lot of talking in French and Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin get it on. Directed by Roger Vadim. Four Junior Mints

Just saw a documentary about Ginger Baker called Beware Mr. Baker, made in 2011. Intriguing. It managed to prove both what a musical genius he is and how bat-sh*t crazy he is. (He is still alive, right?)
