I saw "This Is the End" tonight and enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm glad I caught it in the theater.

Well, technically, it's for everybody. But I get your point.

I greatly enjoyed "Gravity" in 3D. Some friends were disappointed, and it would help, I think, to be aware beforehand that the story is extremely simple. So now you know! I also greatly enjoyed "Enough Said" -- in glorious 2D, and in a packed theater, which makes a big difference with a comedy.

I loved Enough Said, too. A smart, believable relationship comedy. I was really rooting for those two to get together.
I'm curious to see Gravity, and I figure 3-D is the way to go.
We also saw Don Jon last weekend. I was impressed by the nuanced characters, as well as the fine acting. Again, I really got into the relationships. Who knew Joseph Gordon-Levitt would turn out to be an auteur?
On another note, I have been doing a lot of baking recently and watched several bio-pics on HBO -- the Anthony Hopkins one about Alfred Hitchcock, the Josh Brolin one about George W Bush (Richard Dreyfus was scary good as Dick Cheney), and Al Pacino's over-the-top Phil Spector impersonation. If you can't chew scenery when portraying Phil Spector, you might as well turn in your thespian card.

So many movies to keep up with this time of year, and I'm doing my best. Loved "Nebraska," which I would describe as a comedy about pride, and enjoyed "Philomena" and "Dallas Buyers Club." Thank goodness for mid-Missouri's independent movie theater! Also enjoyed "Catching Fire" (with help from my daughter, who filled me in on plot points I'd forgotten since the first installment), but couldn't share the enthusiasm of apparently everyone else in the world for "American Hustle."

I also loved "Nebraska." I did not expect it to be as funny as it was.
We saw "Anchorman 2" on Boxing Day. I thought it was a lot of fun. Unlike some sequels, it didn't simply recycle jokes from the first film (although it did recycle a couple jokes -- how could you not have Ron Burgundy play jazz flute while figure skating?) But it was actually a fairly perceptive satire on the news business, more so than the first Anchorman.
Yesterday I saw "Inside Llewyn Davis." It was gloomy and brooding, just like the folk music it celebrates. Some excellent performances, but not a very uplifting film. I love the Coen Brothers' movies, but this would not be one of my favorites. They certainly did get the period look down right, though.

Caught up with some more movies over the MLK weekend: "August: Osage County" -- I was surprised by how melodramatic the plot is, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Julia Roberts is especially impressive, and her "eat the ****ing fish" scene stacks up well against Jack Nicholson ordering a tuna sandwich in "Five Easy Pieces." "Inside Llewyn Davis" -- Also fun, but I agree with Holly. So do Suzanne Vega and Christine Lavin, who I believe have also criticized the movie for making that scene seem too bleak. (New Vega album next month!!!) "Her" -- Best of the bunch. I felt like I was watching something new and different. I learned in the credits that Kristen Wiig is the voice in the phone sex scene, and I'm convinced she was ad-libbing, because no one could have written that! I think Joaquin Phoenix was cool enough to not crack up and just go with it.

Now that the Oscar nominations are out, I need to go on my annual movie-watching binge of all nominated Best Pictures. I finally saw Captain Phillips, which was a solid piece of movie-making but nothing special. Hope to get to American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street this weekend.

'La Dolce Vita' (1960) Just for fun, Fellini's prime cut classic. Still, undubbed and sans subtitles - and weighing in at just under three hours - the predominant non-English speaking portions can be tedious - unless! - one invents one's own imagined dialog to go over it, then it's big fun. Some friends of mine and I used to do something similar with 'The Ten Commandments' by turning the sound completely down and supplying cornball wisecracks in place of the original. I think we felt we were diddling with danger. Anyway, it's visually engaging throughout most of it, so who needs intelligible words? I think voice dubbing wrecks the original, and as for subtitles, who wants to read a movie? Ciao, baby! Four Junior Mints
