Its only fair that I let you know what I think of the set Martin, afterall if It wasn't for you and John I might not have ordered it! John, I want to congratulate you on this excellent thread. You provide us with detailed information about great musical acts. Martin, I want to thank you for having made an excellent contribution about ELO on this thread. It's a brilliantly written article. And many thanks for having opened so many valuable music threads. They are not one offs. Therefore they will endure! Seconded, Simont, I couldn't have said it better! John and Martin are very special and a great asset to the forum. Keep up the excellent work, guys! Thank you for your feedback, Europeanson! I appreciate it!

This next one is a short and sweet and to the point recommendation that I've imported from the Day The Music Died thread! CHUCK BERRYI've seen many argue that Chuck Berry is the true King of Rock N Roll. A comprehensive set of his music is a must for any serious music and rock n roll fan! For the longest time, 'The Great Twenty Eight' single cd collection was the go to set for the first time buy of a Chuck Berry fan! This is a solid set of his singles but it is much too skimpy when there is a much more comprehensive set to be had for not much more moolah! Stay tuned for what that option is! CHESS BOXI personally have the Chuck Berry 'Chess Box' which is probably the most comprehensive option that doesn't stray into the expensive, but rewardingly exhaustive territory of Bear Family or like boxsets. The sound quality is a 'little thin' because this came out in the earlier days of the cd format. Chess Box contains virtually all Berry's essential songs from the 50s up to 'My Ding A...' and comes with a large booklet filled with info! You can probably score this for around $30 brand new if you do your homework! 3CD, 71 track, box of rock n roll cream and chocolates! ANTHOLOGY and GOLDMy brother has the 2Cd Anthology which boasts 50 Tracks, 9 written pages of liner notes, and discographical credits for each song! It boasts pristine sound. The only drawback is that 'Run Rudolph Run', his classic holiday song, is left off! It also comes in a compact slimline double case that takes up little room! Awesome package! Fine liner notes! Anthology has recently been re-released as 'Gold'. I haven't see the actual contents of 'Gold' but I believe they should be the same as for Anthology (I know the track listing is the same). I've actually thought of getting Anthology or Gold myself even though I already have all the songs on Chess Box. CONSUMER NOTEOne note! Anthology has went out of print so 'Gold' is the best option for the budget! You can find 'Gold' for under $9 brand new from online sites which have third party sellers! This makes 'Gold' the 'gold standard' for those seeking both comprehensiveness and budget options!

BUDDY HOLLYThis is short and sweet! There is no need to skimp on all these single disc collections! Hear all the prime Holly cuts in one 2 disc collection! BUDDY HOLLY COLLECTION and GOLDI wanted to mention that there is a great 50 track set for Buddy Holly called the 'Buddy Holly Collection' that came out in 93', and was later reissued and repackaged as 'Gold'. They are essentially the same, although Gold presumably has newer masterings. Tim and I have them both between us and I don't see any noticeable difference besides the Buddy Holly Collection comes in a thick double cd case and Gold comes in a slimline. Gold and the The Buddy Holly Collection both boast of a thick and informative booklet detailing the career of the late and great Buddy Holly! A great starting point for the novice Holly collector or a good upgrade choice for the longtime fan who just has one of the single disc comps! It's a definitive comprehensive set and a bargain set all in one! CONSUMER NOTEI would personally choose GOLD at this moment because here in the States it is much cheaper than The Buddy Holly Collection for brand new items! Not Fade Away: Complete Studio Recordings & MoreIf you insist on the whole kit and kaboodle, well this 6CD, 203 track collection with an 80 page booklet is for you! MartinMartin recommended The Buddy Holly Collection and GOLD earlier on the Day the Music Died thread and I encourage you to make that known here too, Martin!

BUDDY HOLLYThe 2-CD-compilation “The Buddy Holly Collection” was released in 1993 on the MCA label and contains 50 outstanding tracks. It’s the most comprehensive and greatest CD-era retrospective of the legendary rock’n roller and a must for anybody who loves American music of the 20th century. This collection includes all Buddy’s big hits – and there’s even more to it! This compilation showcases what a great and innovative artist Buddy Holly really was with his wild-man rockabilly and sensitive songwriting which can be (re)-discovered listening to his lesser known songs. Overall there are no weak tracks on this collection and taken as a whole, Buddy’s gifts as a songwriter and a rocker are simply staggering! The above quoted double-disc set “The Buddy Holly Collection” was reissued in 2005 on the Geffen label titled “Gold”, bearing a different artwork but the same liner notes. Both items are still available and worth getting.

I just wanted to update everyone that I have just received an exciting new package containing the masterwork of Rick Nelson! It will take me a while to survey the set; but this has completed my Rick Nelson collection and will allow me to make a comprehensive and/or budget recommendation sometime soon for him!
I'm currently thinking about what my bext addition to this thread will be! Try to be patient!

Thanks for the recommendations! (Smiley, it is true that seeing Bryan Ferry is just as important as listening to him! ), The Buddy Holly collection should be an fairly straightforward thing, since his career was so suddenly cut short. But I'm curious to see what Rick Nelson suggestions you come up with!

But I'm curious to see what Rick Nelson suggestions you come up with! Thanks Holly! Yes, with such a tragically short career, finding a comprehensive Holly collection should be straightforward but there are still numerous unsatisfying collections out there ! I'm still curious about what I'll come up with for Rick Nelson although I have some idea! Thanks for your dvd recommendation for Roxy Music Smiley! Perhaps Martin will want to tackle a cd/s recommendation for them?

THE DRIFTERSThe POP ERA - 1959-1965I now turn my attention to the soulful pop group, The Drifters, who had many smash hits in the late 50s and into the 60s on the US pop charts! The group is best known for the period that began when 'There Goes My Baby' almost topped the US pop charts (#2) in 1959 when the group was then fronted by Ben E. King! This 'pop era' extended until 1965 with 1964's 'Saturday Night at the Movies' being their last major hit (#18) in the US. Ben E. King would sing lead on 4 more Top 40 hits, including 2 #1s, 'Dance With Me' and 'Save The Last Dance For Me'. Johnny Lee Williams, Rudy Lewis ('Up on The Roof', 'On Broadway'), and Johnny Moore ('Under The Boardwalk) would combine to sing lead on 11 more Top 40 pop hits including 3 more Top 10s, by 1964. The R & B ERA - 1953-1957The true legacy of The Drifters for r & b and soul fans, however, lies in their early sides with Clyde McPhatter being the primary lead vocalist; with Johnny Moore and Bill Pinkney also taking turns on lead vocals! From 1953 to 1957, The Drifters had 9 Top 10 R& B hits (Money Honey, Such A Night et al) and one other #11 R & B hit! This was an almost undeterred run of smash r & b hits for The Drifters! The early 'r & b' period has been left off all the standard Drifters compilations; including Rhino Records excellent single disc 16 Track cd, 'The Very Best of The Drifters'. There was a double cd anthology released for this early period along with one for the more pop oriented period; but those are much too extensive for anyone but the most serious Drifters' fans! THE DEFINITIVE SOUL COLLECTIONThere has not been a definitive Drifters set containing all the classics from both periods besides 'The Definitive Soul Collection'; a 2CD, 30 track set from Rhino Records! It is a fabulous set! It contains all 16 tracks from the 'Very Best of The Drifters' and adds 14 additional tracks. What this means is that you will get a package that includes all 10 of their early r & b classics and all of their essential pop smashes in one succinct package! It even adds a 'near Top 40 pop' number (#43), 'At The Club' from 1965. This is both the best budget and the most comprehensive one stop shop package available for The Drifters that I have found! Plus, it can be had brand new for for less than $6! It boasts fine liner notes and pristine sound; which is no surprise as this is a Rhino Records set! As I recently found, this is the perfect set to get you lost in the wonder that is The Drifters!

Thank you for your new contribution about a great band, John! I wonder what you will come up with about Rick Nelson! Thanks Martin! Please be patient with me as best you can! I want to do as good a job for Rick Nelson as I just did for The Drifters; but that will require a great deal of effort, research, and some more happy listening !
