You're welcome sleepwalker! I remember you telling me about the great deal you got on that ELO cd. I think it served it's purpose to wet your appetite for more ELO! I would highly recommend 'Light Years: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra' as a very budget choice to get a broader ranging sampling of their music! I think it is the perfect choice for you as it would basically double your ELO library! Thanks for this recommendation John I have just ordered 'Light Years...' on Amazon. I took note of your recommendation and thought I'd like to get it - then I read Martin's detailed post on this and was convinced to get it! Thanks to both of you!

That's great sleepwalker! I'm not sure that between my Afterglow boxset and the 29 song double cd set 'Strange Magic: Best of ELO' that I have; that I have everything you will have in that set! A great purchase on your part! I wish I had brought it up earlier though because as ridiculously good of a deal as 'Light Years' is now, I saw it a couple of months ago at under $6! Sorry I didn't start this expose process for ELO a few months ago!

Thanks sleepwalker! I appreciate you mentioning that you noticed the similarity in Mr. Blue Sky and Do You Remember Walter as well! As soon as I thought about it I could see what you meant, especially regarding the first 10 seconds or so of both songs!

I am now going to import a post from The Day the Music Died thread which inspired me to start this thread. Martin may want to import some of his recommendations for Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincet; and may want me to import my followup responses? I'll leave that up to him.
Martin: John, I'm currently looking for a representative 2 or 3-CD-Collection (or even a Box Set) of Johnny Cash.
I have several Cash boxsets and cds so I might not be the one to ask Martin!
The problem with most of the collections is they leave out the American Recordings of the last 9 years of his life!
The single simplest way to get the most comprehensive set that covers most of his career is to get the 4Cd 104 track Legend boxset that retails for under $25. It's fabulous and has things that weren't even in my vast collection of stuff!
If you get that, what needs to be covered is his 6 American Recordings albums. There is a boxset called 'Unearthed' that contains rarities that didn't make it onto the American Recordings albums and has a 'best of cd' inside it that has the best of the first 4 American Recordings. Then you'd need the other 2 American albums. I'd get Unearthed or all 6 of the American albums.
The Legend boxset would give you a great sampling of everything he did (besides American Recordings) including a final duet with daughter Rosanne so I'd start there.
Now if I was willing to spend more money, I'd do this. I'd get the 3CD 'Complete Sun Recordings 1955-58' by Time Life Records of which I have. This contains all of his Sun Records sides and I've seen it selling for under $13 brand new! I personally think this is his most vital period and he had by far the most hits (country and pop) of anyone on Sun (Elvis never even had a national hit while he was briefly there). There are so many nuggets of gold on this set and it features the great Luther Perkins on every track!
Then I'd get the Essential Johnny Cash 3Cd boxset which covers all his Columbia Records stuff from 1958 to 1983 and also contains about 15 of his best Sun sides! This boxset is the first thing I ever bought myself by Cash in the early 90s and it's awesome! There is a longbox and compact slipcase version available and you should be able to find either for under $20 (probably have to be 'used' though).
Then I'd get all 6 of the American Recordings albums and the Unearthed box that has many great rarities; including duets with Joe Strummer and many of his Tom Petty partnerships.
Oh yea, Cash recorded on Mercury Records from the mid to late 80s and there is an el cheapo cd called the Mercury Years that covers that!
And finally, I'd get Ultimate Gospel. Cash was just inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame to go along with his Rock N Roll, Country, Songwriters, and Rockabilly Hall inductions. The work he did with the Carter Family makes up the bulk of his gospel stuff and Anita Carter's high harmonies in particular are spellbinding. There's never been quite a career like his and I have no doubt there never will be!

Further imported from The Day The Music Died thread!
Martin: John, thank you so much for the invaluable wealth of information! Fantastic!!!
Yes, indeed, you're the right man to ask!
I'm looking forward to discussing this later on with you. At first glance getting the "Johnny Cash Legend Boxset" (4 CD's with 104 tracks) is a really good idea of yours. I'll check that out.
By the way is there a reason why his American Recordings were never included in any collection? Legal aspects possibly?
My post:
You're welcome Martin!
I'm not really sure why the American Recordings stuff has remained separate from the comps. Many of the comps came out before his American Recordings or in the midst of them. I have no clue why 'The Legend boxset didn't have that stuff (at least Hurt) as it came out after his death and is otherwise impeccable.
I did just remember that Cash had 2 cds called 'The Legend' and 'The Legend Volume 2' that came out after his death that included about 5 American Recordings tracks of the 20 tracks on each cd. These were intended as sort of career retrospectives (albeit skimpy) and it that way were one of a kind.
The Legend boxset is definitely the best single purchase that you could make. I'd recommend picking up the American albums separately; maybe one at a time. The Unearthed boxset would be a luxury. I'd say the best American album for you to pick up; or the first one; well I'd recommend American II - Unchained because it's his album with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Then I'd get his first one 'American Recordings' which has a lot of country blues covers and originals. Then I'd get American IV for sure that contains 'Hurt' whose companion video was rated the 'best video ever' by both CMT and MTV.
Whatever route you go; Legend plus or the more exhaustive route; I should have mentioned that his best 2 proper albums to get are the reissued 'Live at Folsom Prison' and 'Live at San Quentin'.
I'll later import discussions from the Day the Music Died thread about Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry once I'm sure my forum mates believe my first import of the Cash posts are appropriate!

Wow! Thanks for another great post John - I'm reffering to the Johnny Cash info you just provided! As you know I have enjoyed listening to the Cash boxset I recently aquired and am eager to hear more. Although I may have to stop myself from checking these out as I have bought rather a lot of new music lately and I'd only be tempted to buy something! I was intrested to hear about the duets with Joe Strummer (I love The Clash) I'd love to hear those! I did get my copy of At San Quentin in the post today though

on the subject of Johnny Cash, Ray even after he first did it in 1972 is still doing the best impersonation of Johnny Cash I have ever heard.
