What I do like about Ray's later songs - even the ones with the 'arena rock AOR quasi-metal feel' is you can always hear typical 'kinks' in there somewhere. Think Visual still has a music-hall moment "think visual think visual push the button and see ...". Phobia's 'Babies' (musically) could well be lifted from a musical/rock opera. As could 'Around The Dial' ... even with its heavy sound the melody jumps about and shifts in tempo in the way that Shangri-La does. The knock out song for me recently was You're Asking Me .. I couldn't wish for a perfect example of his 60s melody combined with a harder rock edge ... which I think is what Sleepwalker was also good for ...

On some of those later albums, finding the typically Kinksian bits was like mining for gold nuggets.

I do agree with Frank that if I had to choose, I'd rather have my least favorite Kinks album than anything by anyone else. That being said, I can't say that the first time I sat down and listened to GTPWTW that I wasn't concerned, Art Lover and A Little Bit of Abuse were the only songs to me that showed the Ray I've come to know and love, but over the years I've come to appreciate the sly smile that must have been on Rays face when he wrote GTPWTW, I mean, come on, thats the last thing the Kinks are about. But to me, there are albums that I consider the 'new' albums, which really started with Low Budget and includes GTPWTW, Word of Mouth, State of Confusion, etc and although I love them all, they don't really compare to the 'early' albums. VGPS, Something Else, Preservation Acts I & II, Face to Face, Arthur, etc, these albums are masterpieces cover to cover. When I was growing up I would skip lunch and save my money so I could buy Kinks album, and I tell you, I was never disappointed. It would seem that each album was the best thing I'd ever heard and then the next would be better. Listening to Muswell Hillbillies for the first time was amazing, here was a proper English band taking american country music, putting their english values in it and coming up with something that has never been duplicated. So yea, their all great

You put it so well Neon. We've gotten used to it, but MH was so special when it came out; so unique, so against the grain, and poetic, and oniric, and mad, and tender. Ah, I need to hear it! L

Muswell Hillbillies is such an under appreciated gem. The last in a string of seven completely classic consecutive Kinks albums (starting with Kontroversy). Muswell Hillbillies remains (in my opinion) very current in todays messed up world, just change 20th Century man to 21st Century Man. How about Kinks Crimson - combine 20th Century Man w/ 21st Century Schizoid Man/Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues?? ;D But seriously, keep listening, you will come to LOVE Muswell Hillbillies.

Well... I dare say that is NOT true for Me. If I had the choice, I would choose some records out of my desert Island Jukebox over my least fav Kinks record. Comfort food for the ears, you may say. I will not own up to my least favourite but I will list a few that I would take in place of that.. and a few others up the rank. The Who's, Quadraphenia The Beatles, Abbey Road The Stones, Exile on Main St. Collective Soul's, Dosage just sayin'!

Yea, Thanksgiving Day DOESN'T work in the UK or any other place that doesn't celebrate it. I'm not sure if it works in Canada either, but I know they have their own Thanksgiving Day. Comments KinKcan??? It's all good!

Comments KinKcan??? It's all good! We have our Thanksgiving Day in Canada but Ray's song is not part of the celebration. In fact, there's no day when I really feel like playing that song.
