I went to the Colin Hay show at the Canal room in N.Y.C. Friday night and he was playing a new song (Lose to Win) and my jaw dropped the minute he started strumming, it was a song that I felt was heavily influenced by "Sunny Afternoon" and "Dead End Street". After the show Colin was signing CD's when I told him that I didn't appreciate anybody but Ray Davies until I heard his song from a year ago "Beautiful World" he then stepped back and said "As a matter of fact my song "Win to Lose" I interrupted him immediately and said Sunny Afternoon? He laughed, smiled and shook his head yes. I left the show in a very good mood. By the way there is a song on the new CD, "Are You Looking at Me" which is just fantastic.

It's a pretty nice cover, actually -- wistful and a little melancholy. I interviewed her a couple weeks ago (how could I turn down a chance to interview someone named Holly who is a Ray Davies fan?). She said she wanted to record that song ever since Ray sang it on SNL years ago. The rest of her new CD is pretty darn good too. She used to be a punkster but her new sound is acoustic Americana. She reminds me of Jill Sobule, with a girly voice but edgy lyrics. Not quite as funny as Jill, though.

Thanks for the review HH. Art Lover prolly takes on a bit of a different meaning sung by a woman? "Come to Daddy" or does she change it?

No, she doesn't change the "Come To Daddy" line. She told me she didn't think it mattered, since nobody really thinks it's her in the song anyway. It does have the odd effect of sounding as if she's the little girl in the park, all grown up now, remembering her encounter from years ago.
