Nice. Ray is quite right, as usual. Naturally he knows he's got to protect his own image when he's reviewing this; he can't be really objective like a professional reviewer would be. A few competitive jabs are only to be expected!
I think it's interesting that he seems mostly to appreciate the Paul tracks more than the John ones. The things with a bit of music hall/jazz in them -- influences that Ray himself incorporated so well into his own music -- and he doesn't respond well to the psychedelia. Ray never went for the psychedelia, did he?

Ray is apparently coming to NYC to do a reading of his new book Americana, sometime in October. (Actually I have the date engraved on my heart but I'm trying to act casual about it....)

They are partial to Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend, eh? Well, several of these songs are on my blog's Top Ten Albums list for 2013 -- Amos Lee, Arcade Fire, the Avett Brothers, and the Mavericks. (I skipped Paul McCartney because he doesn't need me to plug his records. And I personally felt let down by the Vampire Weekend and Elvis Costello records.) For those who are interested, here's my list: thesonginmyheadtoday.blogspot.com/2013/12/my-2013-top-ten-albums-final-countdown.html

Has anybody got a contact address (snail mail) for Ray Davies? I just spent a good half-hour writing something to him, ended up crying - and now I can't find an address. Words can't express how much his music (and Dave's, but I imagine Dave hates fan mail) means to me, has since I was four. Recently I was in a very bad situation, trapped somewhere, and someone stuck in there with me took a guitar and played and sang Sunny Afternoon and Shangri-La. That's what got me through.
