You're right, Luis -- Waterloo Sunset seems like such a personal song, so quintessentially Ray, that I shudder to think of Van Halen covering it. Or even worse, people saying it's a Van Halen song!

I think Shangri-La was very underestimated. Great song.

Shangri-La's a sleeper, all right! That's why I think it's amazing Ray picked it for the full-choir treatment in last spring's shows.

If we are talking just songs by written by Ray, I think most of his songs never really got the total recognition and ratings they deserved

I think "Lost and Found" is lovely, too.

If we are talking just songs by written by Ray, I think most of his songs never really got the total recognition and ratings they deserved I totally agree, but I think he had something to do with that - he didn't exactly go out marketing his songs after the first wave of success died down, IMO "acute schizophrenia paranoia blues" probably summed up his mistrust of the industry of which he was a part. It couldn't have been easy being his manager.

I still think it's Sitting In My Hotel. It's such a perfect song... And unlike most songs you mention, I think it's even underrated by Kinks fans, probably even by myself. But when I hear it... It couldn't be better in any way!
It's also underrated by The Kinks, Ray, Dave... Has it ever been played live? I highly doubt it. But if I could write a song like it I'd play it every day, to everyone I met.

I am pretty sure Sitting in my Hotel was done live at some of the early 70's shows shortly after the album came out. I can vision in my head at shows I was at it being done now : And for me too, it has been and still is one of my favorites!

It doesn't appear in any setlist from Doug's book, that's why I said it, but it could perfectly be since there aren't setlists for every concert there.
Ray, if you have any live recording with that song under your bed please release it!

But then, Ray's not like everybody else.

Hard to answer but I think "Wall of Fire" and "Art Lover" are two of them...

But then, Ray's not like everybody else. I can see why Ray sabotaged things 'cos I worked as a secretary ' pa in the rock & roll industry back in the 1970s, and also I've been a fan of the eccentric alternative folk singer Roy Harper for 38 years - he also sabotaged his own success by making unfriendly comments to the press back in the day!!! I mean it's not OK to say the Emperor has no clothes when the Emperor's got so much power and influence!!! Thank heavens that they write good music which can still be released even though they aren't on the arena/stadium circuits.
