St Johns shows...I remember more of the early 70's one was it 71 or 72?... when Argent opened for the KinKs...another very strange and drunken kinks show. I remember the long delayed teazer opener of till the end of the day, that had the crowd going berserk from the get go, Ray was wobbling aroud the stage most of the night but at least remained upright! At one point he broke in to at least one Johhny Cash song...I also remember that's when they were doing People take pictures of each other...with If I were a Rich Man sandwiched in to the middle of it...absolutely priceless!!! Lew I take that back, I want to go back too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Prior to show time that night Nobby ( John Dalton ) had stepped outside the gym for some air but when he tried to get back in he didn't;t have his backstage pass and they would not let him in...a few minutes before they were to go on I managed to appear just at the right place at the right time ( somehow I have a knack for that don't LOL ) and vouched for Nobby and used my pass to escort him back in...actually unless it pertains to Ray and The Kinks I usually am more likely to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...the story of my life as the Social Distortion song goes! Could be why Ray started dedicating the Hardway to me years later??? As for the later 70's St John's show...I can't remember that too well as to when it was or the who opened but I think it was sometime after Misfits and Just before Low Budget came out. If anyone has details on this show refresh my and all of ours memory. ( I was there)...If I find out specifics from Dougs book on this I'll add another post later. I remain the Dan the Mad KinKs Fan & One of the Survivors... FranK

Thanks, Frank, for your entertaining stories about vintage Kinks shows. I recently became reinterested (if that's a word) in Ray Davies and the Kinks after seeing his recent show at the Warfield in San Francisco. Wonderful show. My other Kinks shows were San Jose in early 1977 and Ray's birthday show in Berkeley in 1978 (Bill Graham handed out slips of paper to have the audience sing Happy Birthday to Ray, and Bill rolled out a birthday cake himself). I was in my early teens back in those days, and just started getting into the Kinks at that time. I didn't see a show again until Ray's Storyteller show in the mid-'90s, a Dave show in 2001, then the recent Ray show. I regret not seeing more. Keep the stories up, they're a lot of fun.

Thanks Frank! I'm listening to a live Kinks performance (1972) from the Felt Forum. It's available on Wolfgang's Vault--which is free to join and stream concerts. This is a highly energized and gloriously sloppy performance. The sound is generally decent, though muddy at some points. Very interesting and unusual set list. The "You're Looking Fine" rock'n'roll medley is riotous. Lola is played at 1/3 speed. I'm currently listening to very unusual version of Picture Book complete with boozy horns. Here is the link (you need to be a member, but it's free): concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/the-kinks-concert/20052824-7527.html• 1. Victoria 4:04 + <> • 2. Frank cleared up another herbally-induced misconception for me - I recently posted on the KPS that the best opening act for the Kinks was Argent at St. John's U - but I had them opening at the 2nd show in approx '78-79, when it was actually the approx '73 (Argent had a recent run of FM-radio hits including Hold Your Head Up, It's Only Money Parts 1 & 2, and God Gave Rock & Roll To You. By the time the Kinks played St. John's that second time, Jim Rodford who had been the bassist with Argent, was already playing with the Kinks.
That early 80's show was probably when they were in the process of readying "One For the Road " for release - except the working title of the LP at that time was "Double Life" - which was also my all-time fave tour T-shirt. I bought it at the St. John's show - it had KINKS in a mirror image along the top, below that and side-by-side were the Stars & Stripes and the Union Jack, and along the bottom, also in a mirrored image, were the words "DOUBLE LIFE".
Note to donl - I also remember the Brooklyn College show vaguely - I really enjoyed their cover of the Everly Bros. "Bird Dog" at that show.

March 31 1973 at St. John's with Argent opening. " Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner was another song Ray was throwing in that night " and I think it was the Johnny Cash song " Give my Love to Rose " he could have sung part of too? and Feb 23 1980 with Falcon Eddy opening. Mg I was at the warfield SF show too last month...that show and the Boston show were possibly the 2 best shows of the the mini tour, the SF and Boston audiences were really electric. Dave I was at that Felt Forum show...that was right around the time I started the paper plates, we were already sneaking beers in to the show at that point to have our infamous on stage beer wars with Ray during alcohol. This may be the night I also had one with Dave and Dalton. There was one Felt Forum show they got me good after I ran out! This also could be one of the Forum shows where Dave almost got arrested for takng a security guards cap and tossing it out in to the audience..if so than I ended up banged up that night because I got on to the stage and there was a fight between the the security guards Dave, Kenny Jones the road manger and I rounded up some friends and we got involved to help Dave out. Also at one of the forum shows during the encore Dave whacked his guitar over Goslings Keyboards and Gosling toppled over the Hammond, Mick in disgust kicked part of the drums over and stormed off, and Ray came out yelling at them on stage, and apologized and said something like I'm sorry but we're just The KinKs??? The Brooklyn College show was another drugs and alcohol tension packed show smack in the middle of all this great rock & roll chaos. I don't remeber too much of that show other than getting there was difficult, but not as bad as the Capitol Theatre in Passaic shows which I have stories about too if I can remember them??? Thanks, everyone, for welcoming me.
I do remember something about beer and Kinks shows. At one of the shows I watched in the '70s, Ray shook a beer bottle and aimed some foam. He also balanced a bottle on his head at one point. Another time, he turned his back on the audience and lifted his jacket, saying something like "I have the greatest ass in show business" (and yes, I've seen that clip on YouTube, which reminded me of that). And he started to sing "Dayo" from "The Banana Boat Song" more than once. I'm still not sure why I never went to see the Kinks after '78, maybe the timing for buying tickets or seeing the shows didn't work out for some reason, because I've always loved their records, and had a great time at those shows. Oh, well.
I'm glad to know San Francisco was a good audience for Ray this spring. It's a good West Coast Kinks town, maybe because the old KSAN-FM radio station used to play Kinks records quite a bit. I'm continuing to enjoy all the stories about the band. Thanks, Frank, and everyone else here. It was nice to find this message board.
Cheers, Mary (mg)

regarding double life, i wonder if that had been released if it would have been different than what became one for the road, although i liked one for the road it was a little too low budget heavy. i saw the low budget tour when it came to nassau in july '79 and i believe the show openned with sleepwalker then permanent waves. they may evem have played the sunny afternoon/well respected man/death of a clown medleythey used to do and which i hope will one day be released on a kinks box set someday. actually isn't one supposedly going to be released the end of this year? i remember reading that ray said a box was planned around the time of the reunion story earlier this year. anybody know anything about that? also does anybody know if rays austin city limits show is going to be released by new west?

Oh, yes, Mary, you've pretty much covered all the late 70s bases. ;D It looks like you're a Nick Lowe fan, too, Holly. I also remember seeing Nick and Rockpile a few times in the late '70s/early '80s. I haven't gotten around to seeing Nick in many years. Once again, it must be bad timing, either the show or the ticket sales. I tried buying tickets for Nick this fall, but they sold out in minutes (he was playing a small club). This spring, the timing just wasn't right. I'd love to see him, though I'm hoping he'll have a band again someday, too. Seeing Ray in March reminded me of the fun I had when I was young and had more time -- and tickets were so much cheaper, I think both the Kinks and everybody else back then were no more than $8 for the best seats, and services charges were really cheap back then, too. I've seen many shows over the years, but there's something about the latest Ray show that really brought me back to those days when music was so important to me. It feels like a communal event when a show goes off that well, and you know most of the other people in the audience are experiencing the same thing.

Mary, let's go see Nick in England where he does manage to rustle up a band!
I love what you said about those Ray concerts feeling like a communal event. Since I've reconnected with Kinks fans over the past few years, I've rediscovered "those days when music was so important to me." I can't imagine why I ever got off track!
