Well, my bad luck only involves the calamities that occur when I go to see Ray's concerts, so we'll see what happens when I fly to London to see the Hampton Court shows.

It's a sad and woeful story.... and potentially a very long one. Do you want a brief summary or a complete dissertation with all the minutia and the twenty seven eight-by-ten color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one?

Let's start with the power point version...

Here it is:
10-15-95 Ray’s X-Ray tour is playing at the Park West but I don’t find out about it until 15 minutes before the show is about to start. As far as I know he will never play solo again so I desperately try to find out where else he is playing. The internet is still primitive and my ability to use it is even more so and I don’t find out his schedule until it is too late to see him in the U.S. So…
11-17-95 I fly to London (pretty d**n inexpensive then) to see Ray at the Willesden Empire on the 18th. When I get to the theater I find out he is sick and has canceled (possibly the same flue bug I come down with). The proprietor of the Empire is a saint and gets me a comp ticket to see Ray in Spalding ( 100 miles north of London) on my last night in England, but for various reasons it’s not a great night.
April 96 You can’t lose them all! Ray plays the 440 seat Apollo Theater for two weeks. I go 5 times and it’s just fantastic.
11-17-96 I see Ray at the Vic. When I try to get home I can’t because all the surrounding streets are blocked. Apparently the cops want people to stay away from my condo building which is in the process of burning to the ground along with everything I own including my copy of TGLKA.
Next 12 years. For some reason I avoid going to any of Ray’s concerts.
4-1-08 I hear such great things about this tour I just have to go. No calamities, although the sound system for the main floor has some pretty bad distortion on the vocals and I end up sitting next to a drunk who is constantly shouting out loud WOO’s. But only during quiet contemplative passages. But the concert’s so great that…
4-8-08 I fly to New York to see Ray’s last U.S stop at the Beacon. Phenomenal performance and a better crowd than in Chicago although it turns out that the sound at the back of the loge section is pretty bad. Nevertheless, I have absolutely no regrets until 5AM when my cell phone goes off because of the text message from American Airlines saying that my flight (and every other one of their New York to Chicago flights) has been canceled.
6-15-08 I am going to London so I can see Ray perform with a choir. I can hardly wait to see what happens this time.

Ok, you may have bad luck, but at least you have an interesting story to tell everyone! I'm sure this time everything will be allright.

My philosophy is that the purpose of our lives is to have experiences that make for good stories to tell. On that basis the fire is the best thing that ever happened to me.
If you're lucky I'll tell you the "yearbook and the fire" story someday.
