I posted this today on Facebook! I'm sure Martin will find this interesting as a fan of Mellencamp and Carlene!
One of mine and my brother Tim's favorite female singers, Carlene Carter, is set to release a joint album with John Mellencamp this year. Carlene is the daughter of June Carter Cash and 50s country/rockabilly great Carl Smith, as well as Johnny Cash's stepdaughter. Carlene was also married to Nick Lowe, and it is their wedding that is featured in the video for his smash hit 'Cruel to Be Kind' in 1979. Carlene's self titled album from 1977 included backing by Graham Parker's band The Rumour, while 1979s 'Two Sides To Every Woman' found her backed by members of the Doobie Brothers. Paul Shaffer appeared on one of her early albums and Carter opened for the Sex Pistols during this time! 1980s Musical Shapes is often mentioned as her best album. Carlene was backed on it by Rockpile, the band that consisted of Lowe and Dave Edmunds. A duet with Edmunds, 'Baby Ride Easy', became a minor country hit. Carlene co-wrote 'Easy From Now On' with Guy Clark's wife Susan, which became a big hit for Emmylou Harris. 1981s 'Blue Nun' found her recording and dueting with Paul Carrack (Ace, Squeeze, Mike & the Mechanics, solo). Musical Shapes had gained Carter a rep as a new wavish cowpunker, but she emerged at the end of the 80s as a mainstream country star with the release of 1989's 'I Fell In Love'. 'Come On Back' hit #3 on the country chart, while the title track became the most played single in all of country radio in 1989. These up tempo tracks and the I Fell In Love album maintained Carter's established frenetic style with expert backing by the likes of Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), lauded guitarist Albert Lee, and Levon Helm. My favorite track by Carlene is 'Every Little Thing', a #3 country hit from 1993s 'Little Love Letters', an album Al Anderson of NRBQ played guitar on. Carlene hosted an interview show on MTV during this time. Carlene also recorded 'Trust Yourself' with Bob Dylan backing her. Carter even cracked the US POP Top 35 in 1983 in a duet with Robert Ellis Orrall on 'I Couldn't Say No'! Try to spot some of the great musicians I've mentioned in this video of 'I Fell In Love'! PS: I'd forgotten she uses the phrase 'You Really Got Me' in I Fell In Love! Of course, it is well known here by now that I am a massive Kinks fan!
