I've been enjoying this album more and more as time goes by. I have heard that some fans were a little disappointed by it, particularly by Ray's strained/wobbly singing voice. However, as at many times in his career, I believe he's playing various roles and putting on different voices for them.
The first tracks are my least favorites, and I worry that this will put off some listeners. However, as a consummate storyteller, Ray has always been meticulous about the track order on his albums, and the sequence demanded that those tracks -- which "set the scene" for the rest -- go first.
My favorite songs right now are "Mystery Room" and "I've Heard That Beat Before." I also dig "Wings of Fantasy" -- it's such a classic Ray Davies "escape" song!

I love Americana, and musically I think it's great. In my opinion from State Of Confusion, Ray Davies does not get such a good album without undercutting his first album "The Other's People" which is also good. I do not know if it is the best, the best or the worst albums of this year because I do not usually listen to current music since the eighties I have been less liked pop rock groups until I got interested in nothing in recent decades.
