Please sign the online petition to urge the new tenants of the Clissold Arms to retain the Kinks memorabilia or, at the very least, the plaque commemorating the first public performance of Ray and Dave Davies.

Thank you.
'We understand that you have taken over the lease for the pub and that you do not wish the Kinks memorabilia to remain on the walls. Kinks fans from all over the world visit the pub each year and the display (which was set up by the late Professor Michael Kraus) gives a lot of pleasure to them. We cannot dictate to you how you should run your business, but we would strongly urge you to keep the plaque commemorating the first public appearance of Ray and Dave Davies, if nothing else.
We think that the other items should not go to a public auction and hope that you will ask the landlord of the Alexandra pub opposite if he will take the memorabilia and display it on the walls there. Failing this, we feel that the items should either be returned to Konk at 84-86 Tottenham Lane, Hornsey, London N8 7EE, where they came from in the first place, or else be given to the Official Kinks Fan Club to be auctioned at the November meeting where money is raised for the Leukaemia Research Fund.
We hope you will give this serious thought as we are dismayed that The Kinks, who have been so influential in the music world since 1964 and have strong links with the pub, are considered to be an embarrassment to the present leaseholders.'

I just received this article via Google Kinks Alerts, doesn't sound too good to me : British rockers THE KINKS have slammed a London bar landlord for planning to erase an iconic piece of the band's history. Brothers RAY and DAVE DAVIES have pleaded with the new owner of The Clissold Arms not to remove iconic Kinks memorabilia from the venue - where they played their first gig in 1963 - to make room for an upmarket eaterie. The shrine to the WATERLOO SUNSET rockers includes guitars, records and souvenirs, displayed in a specially designated 'Kinks Corner' in the bar. Ray says, "I would urge whoever has bought the pub (bar) to retain some reference to The Kinks so fans all over the world can retain it as a sense of 'place'." Dave adds, "Why on earth can't they have their posh gastro grub (food) and still keep a part of it for tourists, Kinks fans and the curious? "I am sure that if this had been The Cavern and THE BEATLES' history that was being disturbed and got rid of, it would have been brought to the attention of the House of Commons, the Lords and the Queen herself." But new owner CAROLINE JONES remains determined to revamp the whole property. She says, "The new pub will be quite different and it won't be the kind of place you would expect to see (memorabilia)." That last line bums me out....

Caroline Jones is an idiot. Even if she doesn't like The Kinks, it's now been made clear to her that many people do. A smart business person would capitalize on that.

Kinks mourn the loss of their 'shrine' as another British boozer bites the sawdust
By Sara Newman
Published: 24 March 2007
The familiar lament that the traditional local boozer is dying a death has received celebrity backing in the form of the legendary rock band The Kinks.
Ray and Dave Davies have joined campaigners fighting to preserve the typical British pub as they mourn the loss of a north London local that has housed a fans' "shrine" to the Sixties band for more than 20 years.
The Clissold Arms in Muswell Hill, opposite the brothers' childhood home in Denmark Terrace and the site of The Kinks' first public performance in 1963, changed hands and closed last year and is due to be converted into an upmarket gastropub. Its "Kinks Corner" is covered with memorabilia including signed photographs and tickets from the band's concerts. Fans are outraged that its contents could be auctioned off to make way for more sophisticated décor.
Dave Davies, 60, said he was disappointed. "My kids used to go the Clissold now and again and I would always return to it when I was in the area. It's become a shrine pub for a lot of die-hard Kinks fans that travel from all over the world."
He added: "The whole idea of conservation is to keep the things of value and chuck out the rubbish and I don't consider The Kinks to be rubbish. I am sure that if this had been The Cavern and The Beatles' history that was being got rid of, it would have been brought to the attention of the House of Commons, the Lords and the Queen herself."
In an open plea to the new tenants, Ray Davies, 62, pledged to "do all I can to help". In a letter to Hornsey & Crouch End Journal, he wrote: "The memorabilia itself deserves to be seen ... I would urge whoever has bought the pub to retain some sort of reference to The Kinks in the premises so The Kinks' fans all over the world can retain a sense of 'place'. Many of my songs were drawn from characters I observed in the area."
The furore was sparked after a local newspaper reported that, at a Haringey Council meeting, Jobo Developments' managing director Caroline Jones said she had bold plans to revamp the Clissold Arms, which was awarded a plaque by The Campaign For Real Ale (Camra) last year. "It [the new pub] will be quite different, and it won't be the kind of place you would expect to see it." She is reported to have said that, if removed, the items in the "Kinks Corner" would be auctioned off. Ms Jones is currently out of the country. A spokesperson admitted that the removal of the memorabilia "was a consideration", but refused to comment any further.
The Official Kinks Fan Club said it was "dismayed that The Kinks are considered to be an embarrassment to the present leaseholders". It has launched an online petition requesting that Jobo Developments donate the items to The Alexandra pub or the Archway Tavern. Alternatively it urges the new owners to donate the memorabilia to its fan club who would auction the items for the Leukaemia Research Fund.
But Ray Davies said they would triumph in the end: "Whatever is the outcome, one thing is certain; The Kinks and their music will always be linked with north London and Fortis Green long after gastronomic styles have come and gone."
Cheers! Bands who made their debut in a pub
* THE CLASH
The Black Swan in Sheffield was where The Clash made their debut in front of 50 people on 4 July, 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols. The venue has since been renamed The Boardwalk
* BOB DYLAN
It is thought the first-ever UK appearance by the young Robert Zimmerman was at a pub called the Pindar of Wakefield in November 1962. He'd been invited to sing at a folk club run by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. The pub, near King's Cross, London, was also the venue for Pogue Mahone's first gig, in October 1982.
* THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE QUEEN
Damon Albarn, the former Blur frontman, launched his latest supergroup last October in front of an audience of 150 with a gig in the Pig's Nose, a tiny village pub in East Prawle, Devon. Albarn, who also mastermined the group Gorillaz, assembled musicians including Verve guitarist Simon Tong and the Clash's Paul Simonon
* ELASTICA
One of the few Britpop bands fronted by a woman, they made their debut gig at the Old Trout in Windsor on 7 May 1993. Front-woman Justine Frischmann dated Damon Albarn for a while. In July the same year they had their first headline London gig at the Powerhaus. They had numerous charts successes before splitting up in 2001.
* THE FRATELLIS
The Glasgow-based three-piece played their first gig in February 2005 in the basement of O'Henry's, a pub in their native city. They went to have a Top 20 debut album and won the Best Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards earlier this year.

Lib Dem Councillor for Fortis Green, Matt Davies, who has lent his voice and support to the campaign early on, has updated his previous blog page on the campaign - mattdaviesharingey.blogspot.com/2007/03/clissold-arms-fortis-green-kinks.html - with this comment;I had seen the NME article, but good to hear it's being covered in national press too.
I will sign the petition and circulate it to council colleagues from both parties, as well as friends.He has also added an entire page dedicated to the petition here;mattdaviesharingey.blogspot.com/2007/03/kinks-at-clissold-arms-petition.htmlI've had a comment on my previous post about the Kinks heritage of the Clissold Arms, which has details of a petition everyone can go and sign:
www.ipetitions.com/petition/kinksattheclissold/
The campaign and the petition featured in a two page article in The Independent today apparently and the story has already been covered by the NME as well as the Muswell Hill Journal.
The organisers say that in less than 2 days, almost 400 people have signed the petition already and they are aiming to go over 1000 signatures by Tuesday.
Why not be one of that 1000 and encourage friends and family to sign up too?[/b][/color] You can help further by asking your friends, family members and colleagues to sign and by posting the link to the petition on message boards, forums, news groups, blogs, MySpace etc.

Love that Matt Davies. I believe the Caroline Jones quote above was released before Ray and Dave's public comments, and not -- as that blurb mistakenly suggests -- in response to them. I reckon she knows by now what a public relations nightmare she has on her hands. Question is, what will she do about it?

A big thank you to all who have signed so far, also to those of you who have done a wonderful job of getting so many of your friends and family members to sign up.
Latest updates are that the story is making more newspaper headlines (with articles also having now appeared in the Express and the Metro in the UK) and has now been discussed on UK radio. We've also had the following message of support from US DJ "Java" John;
"I agree! There should be at least a plaque left in honor of The Kinks. And as far as selling the items, if they can't give the stuff back to the fans that donated them, at least give the items to The Kinks, or The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, or The Hard Rock Cafe.
Hey, I'll be asking Dave Davies about this and many other pressing matters when he joins me on my radio program for an interview!
DAVE DAVIES INTERVIEW on "JAVA" JOHN'S ACOUSTIC RECORD, only on www.tropicwaveradio.net THURSDAY APRIL 5th at 10am (eastern time), replay at 10pm!"
We still need your help if we are to succeed in meeting our initial target of 1000 signatures by the time the Muswell Hill Journal goes to press tomorrow afternoon so we hope you will all pass the link on to everybody you know and ask them to sign.

The story has, so far, been mentioned on BBC Radio Five, Radio Clyde and Talksport.
As well as the weekly coverage in the Muswell Hill Journal, the story has now been featured in the Independent, the Express, the Metro and on the NME and Rolling Stone websites.
Councillor Matt Davies has written to fans to let them know that the Council Leader supports the campaign and will be writing to the new owners of the Clissold Arms reminding them of the historical importance of retaining the Kinks memorabilia in its current form.
