More positive headlines today - the Daily Express has an article on the Kinks display remaining at the Clissold Arms. The article mentions Ray and Dave's pleas to the new tenant and also the fantastic response to Olga's online petition. There's a new quote from Dave;
"This is fantastic for our fans. I've been getting emails from Japanese people saying they come over and visit the Tower of London and Big Ben then go to Fortis Green. Bizarre, but it's sweet."
An e-edition of the paper is available online here; www.express.co.uk/ - the piece is on page 13

Can't access the online edition of the Express myself at the moment but, from memory, the article pretty much says the same as these two online articles, apart from Dave being quoted as saying 'Fortis Green' in the Express, as opposed to (this pub);

PUB KEEPS KINKS MEMORABILIA
LATEST: A London pub landlord has caved into protests from fans of THE KINKS to keep iconic band memorabilia at the establishment. Brothers RAY and DAVE DAVIES pleaded with the new owner of The Clissold Arms not to remove photos, plaques and records from the venue - where they played their first gig in 1963 - to make room for an upmarket eaterie. Retaining the shrine to the WATERLOO SUNSET rockers attracted the support of ex-BEATLE RINGO STARR, singer MARIANNE FAITHFULL and film director JULIEN TEMPLE, who all signed a petition. And the campaign seems to have worked. CAROLINE JONES, of the pub's new developer, says, "We have no intention of removing it." Delighted Dave says, "This is fantastic for our fans. I've been getting emails from Japanese people saying they come over and visit the Tower of London and Big Ben then go to (this pub). Bizarre, but it's sweet."

Here is that Daily Express article in full...
Band’s delight as pub saves its Kinks collection There will be no Waterloo Sunset for a shrine to legendary Sixties’ band The Kinks as a pub near where frontman Ray Davies and his brother Dave grew up.
Band memorabilia had been hanging on the walls in “Kinks Corner” in The Clissold Arms in Fortis Green, Muswell Hill, North London, where the group played their first gig in 1963. It became a mecca for Kinks fans worldwide.
As we revealed, it was feared the pub’s new owners planned to auction off the world-famous collection of photos, plaques and records – triggering a storm of protest. Ray and Dave were outraged, while an online petition received more than 1,000 signatures including ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, singer Marianne Faithfull and film director Julien Temple.
Now Caroline Jones of the pub’s new developer days the band’s shrine will stay when the hostelry reopens as a gastropub. “We have no intention of removing it”, she says.
Dave Davies says: “This is fantastic for our fans. I’ve been getting e-mails from Japanese people saying they come over and visit the Tower of London and Big Ben then go to Fortis Green. Bizarre, but it’s sweet.”

I love the way Caroline Jones pretends she never said anything about removing the collection. I'm too lazy to go back to all her old press releases and find the parts where she said the Kinks memorabilia wouldn't fit into the new image, but I'm sure she said something of that nature. Now she's all smarmy and placating...well, she saw there might be money in keeping the collection, so suddenly she's a fan. Sheesh.
I think we need to visit the pub regularly to make sure they don't remove the stuff in the future.

I love the way Caroline Jones pretends she never said anything about removing the collection. I'm too lazy to go back to all her old press releases and find the parts where she said the Kinks memorabilia wouldn't fit into the new image, but I'm sure she said something of that nature. Yup - it's all in the original Muswell Hill Journal article from March 1 (these boards can't cope with long links but the WhyKinks site has links to all the articles on this page; www.whykinks.net/road/clissold/clissold.htm);
New licensee Caroline Jones, who outlined plans for "a quality, food-led establishment" to Haringey councillors at a licensing sub-committee meeting, said: "We haven't made a decision yet, to be perfectly honest. We have inherited it. It [the new pub] will be quite different, and it won't be the kind of place you would expect to see it. If it [getting rid of the memorabilia] is the case then an auction is the kind of thing we would do."
I guess those were the comments she's now saying were completely misinterpreted....
